I bought this a few years ago, played it for a couple hours, then refunded it because it just wasn't clicking. I decided to give it another shot since I've been a fan of zoo games since ye olde DinoPark Tycoon, and I'm very glad I did. Megaquarium manages to solve a problem that many zoo games don't. Most zoo games have a pretty simple formula: you place an animal in an exhibit, you spend a minute or two placing down objects and scenery to fulfill its needs, you move on. While they're often entertaining from a creative perspective, they tend to be lacking in gameplay. Megaquarium solves this problem in a very natural way: keeping only a single species in each tank is extremely inefficient (if not impossible depending on the number of staff available to you). You will have to juggle the needs of multiple species, slotting them together like a big wet puzzle, figuring out the most efficient combinations of the fish available to you in the least number of tanks. I also really appreciate the structure and style of the campaign so far. The first few levels are the expected tutorial junk, while the rest are freeform levels with some sort of restriction or challenge. No multi-step objectives where halfway through the level you get a new objective that requires you to dismantle your aquarium. No interruptions, no disruptive challenges. Just "here's the goal for this level, go". Now I'll mention the reason the game didn't click the first time: Megaquarium involves a lot of sitting around and waiting for numbers to slowly tick up. Whether it's waiting for research points to accumulate to unlock the item you need to progress, or waiting for renown to tick up to finish the level, there's a lot of thumb-twiddling in Megaquarium. If I could change one thing about the game, I'd tune some of the numbers for research and renown down a bit to make things a little snappier.
Megaquarium is a genuinely great tycoon. The management side is excellent. You’re balancing tanks, filtration, staff, animal needs, and visitor flow, and suddenly you realize you’ve spent twenty minutes deciding where to place a single pump. That’s the good kind of tycoon brain damage. But the game definitely has a few rough edges. The graphics are… fine. Not ugly, not impressive. They just exist. And because the game lets you walk around your aquarium, you really start wishing there were more detail and atmosphere. Decoration is another weak spot. The base game is quite limited, and while the DLC adds more items, the variety still runs out fairly quickly. After a while you start seeing the same decorations over and over again. Still, Megaquarium is one of the better modern tycoon games out there. The systems are smart and satisfying. It just could have used more visual variety. At the moment I’m on campaign level 9, so maybe I haven’t seen everything yet. But even with these issues, the game is definitely worth getting, especially if you enjoy old-school tycoon games. Edit: I ended up falling completely in love with this game. After finishing levels 9 and 10 (the last ones in the campaign), I bought two DLCs. A couple of days later, I bought the rest as well. Another great thing is that the developers are still releasing patches, which is always nice to see. Edit 2: I’ve now finished all the campaigns and moved on to sandbox, and somehow I love the game even more. I usually hate sandbox modes because they tend to feel like a continuation of the main game, just more of the same. Not here. You get new animals, a lot of new items, and with the right settings, plenty of new challenges. It actually stays fresh and engaging. Much love to the developers.
I bought this game because my seven-year old is getting into aquariums. She loves it, and is really enjoying Sandbox mode. We're both enjoying the music and building aquariums together. I'm starting to play through the campaign on my own to make sure bettas and axolotls show up at some point, because I'm worried she'll be devastated if they're not included at higher levels. But yeah, overall it's great so far.
The best zoo builder type game I've played since Zoo Tycoon 2. Gameplay is super fun and the devs actually listen to feedback and fix bugs. Cheaper, more functional, and much more fun than Planet Zoo. I can't recommend this enough to any player who enjoys the zoo building genre.
278 hours played at time of review. 100% worth it, so relaxing. Every DLC owned thus far. Every time they release something new or an update I am so excited. Gameplay is simple and fairly straight forward. The Levels and the Sandbox are so well explained how to play and how to win the Level. I am beyond excited to see where the game goes from there. The in game music is delightful. If you like aquariums and designing them yourself, you are looking at the right game.
