Absolutely love this game, one of the few I can still spend hours on and totally lose track of time. However, I'm one of the many that gets the issue with the crashes...though mine seem to happen randomly when I just scroll across the bottom taskbar. Game will freeze, audio will skip and it'll crash to desktop. I've tried all the usual stuff (turn off autosave, match game resolution to desktop resolution) to no avail. Posting this review in the hope's someone sees it and has a fix!

I took a year off of this game, but just came back and played for way longer than I thought.... I got destroyed, too. In the past I did well, but now I have to relearn so much, even the basics. I remember this whole learning experience, it's brutal. My own troops wiping each other out, shooting each other in the back b/c they're shooting arrows uphill in terrible formation. I know it's not a problem with the game b/c I was good last year, but I still can't help thinking to myself how stupid they are to be shooting each other. I wish I never stopped playing Total War games, these next few hours are going to suck. The AI is so much better than in Shogun 1, the previous Total War game. Enormous improvement. There's a lot of variety in the different empires and units too. Expert mode in this game is really tough. This might be the very best strategy series. EDIT: The expansion, Viking Invasion, which comes with this gold edition, is a completely different game. It was the only thing I ever played until recently. I saw that the campaign map was smaller so I thought it would be more simple. It's not, it's immeasurably harder than the Early Period campaign. At least - using the Irish on the Viking campaign is a million times harder than using the Almohads on the Early Campaign. My Almohad units never kill each other and they haven't started a civil war against me yet. They're also OP and wipe out the enemy completely before I lose 60 men.

Game i really good, been playing for several years. In many ways it is better than newer Medieval total war games. I just wish you play Novgorod in early period ans Switzzerland in late period. And would be cool to play as Papal States.

This is my all time favorite game. Any time I have a few hours to spare I load, select the faction I want to play, and start playing. Graphics are of the time, game play is of the time, but, intent, focus, and replay-ability are all unrivaled. Runs on practically any PC, easy to understand, and my all time most Florins in my bank at the end of a run is $4+ million. I've become a master of sea commerce -- and just let the Byzantines or Sicilians get in my way. Pshaw. I first played this game about 20 years ago on a PC that I was gifted from a relative. Every night, after homework, I played at least 3-5 hours. For several years. This game was my escape after a day's work on the family farm. The hours I have logged on Steam are only a fraction of my total play time. I still have my original game CD from two decades ago. That old PC would take several minutes to load this simple title -- a hilarious thing in this modern time. Love this game. I hope to always have a means to play it. Highly recommend. 10/10.

IT WORKS! I have spent many hours trying to make this game work on modern PC with no success in the past. But this Steam version is working almost FLAWLESSLY in the past 25 hours. A brand new PC with Windows 11 and only hiccup I had was few crash-to-desktop instances in the beginning. I disabled autosaves and changed resolution to 1920-1080, which happens to be my native resolution. Not sure what helped, but had only smooth gameplay for 25 hours since.
