If you want to play through a fun little story set in the MW universe, this is for you. If you want a game focused on mech customization and warfare, not so much for you.

I've been playing MechWarrior games for 30 years. And for 30 years, I've been waiting for a MechWarrior game this good! This is the most story-driven, cinematic MechWarrior game - by far. While the voice acting and dialogue could be better (most of it's solid to good, but a few lines here and there fall flat in their delivery), they really nail the Battletech universe - no other game has come close to bringing the Battletech universe to life like this. I'm also impressed by some of the risks they take in the story (don't wanna spoil). The 'Mech combat is good. I can't put my finger on it, but I find it significantly more satisfying than MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries. Frankly, I was always underwhelmed by that game. Clans on the other hand? Exceeded my expectations. The missions are interesting, the worlds are the most fleshed out worlds we've seen yet in a MechWarrior game, the characters are interesting, the story moves at a good pace...and most importantly, the gameplay is just fun. There's currency in the game, but they don't starve you of it - I always felt like I had all that I needed for the moment. The in-game systems aren't particularly well explained (Repairs, Experience, Research, etc.), but they're fairly approachable. Even if you don't quite understand a given system, it's hard to mess it up. But once you do understand them, there's potential for a little more depth in how you advance yourself and your star to help give the game some added replayability. And yes, the game does have replayability! It's entirely story driven, but they approach the "post-story" mode in an interesting way by allowing you to re-play past missions, but with added challenges to complete. The missions were well-designed and interesting enough that I actually look forward to playing them again, so this is cool (never felt that way in Mercs - those missions were all so cookie-cutter and uninspired). But honestly, I'm interested to just playing the story again from the start soon, this time on a higher difficulty. I played the first playthrough on Normal difficulty, and it felt like it was tuned extremely well. Most missions I was able to comfortably clear, but there were a handful that took multiple attempts to get right. I liked that. None of the missions were so long and tedious that I resented having to play through them multiple times to get right. Audio is a weak spot right now. It needs some fine tuning or something. It was noticeable, but didn't distract me from enjoying the game. Overall, I'm so thoroughly impressed by this game and more optimistic about MechWarrior gaming than I have been since i was a kid. This game delivered in almost all the ways that Mercenaries didn't. As far as MechWarrior games go, this is a 9/10 - honestly, I wanna give it a 10/10, but I know that's partly motivated by the fact that there have been so many mediocre MechWarrior games. We've been dying for a MechWarrior game this good. As far as gaming in general goes, I'm going with 8/10. It fills a niche that is under-served IMO, and it's possibly the best stompy robot shooter game ever made. It's probably only because my expectations were so low, but this game has wildly exceeded my expectations and I'm absolutely thrilled to see its development going forward. The MechWarrior community has long-deserved a game this good. Skeptics, stop being skeptical - buy it. It's not perfect, but it's damn good and it's the best MechWarrior game we've seen yet, by far. I promise. Edit: Oh, one criticism I forgot. The combat UI is fine, but the menu UI is...something. It works, and you'll eventually learn your way around it - but it's not well designed, at all. Huge miss. But other than rolling my eyes from time to time and muttering "Who the hell designed this?", it didn't inhibit my enjoyment of the game at all - it's functional, if not optimal or interesting.

MW5 Clans is a VERY different beast from Mercs. You're part of one of the major factions and not an independent barely scrapping by. You're not concerned about salvaging a centuries old mech held together with bailing wire and duct tape; you can simply acquire a much better one fresh from a factory. As such salvage has been heavily abstracted. Would I like to fill an IS mech with Clantech? Sure. Is that thematically appropriate for the story? Not even a little bit. The mechlab is a lot more complicated but so are the mechs. Some equipment on Omnimechs is fixed; those jump jets you always removed in Mercs to free up tonnage? Yeah, you might be stuck with those. On the plus side Omnipods allow for a MUCH greater level of customization. Want to turn you starting Viper into a missile boat? Go for it. All lasers? Yeah, you can do that too. They stuck close to the lore on this one and, depending on your tastes, this is either a very good of a very bad thing. You can tell that most of the VAs aren't using their natural accents but the, lore accurate, lack of contractions is far more jarring than inconsistent pronunciation of Jaguar. Final thoughts: This story is mostly on the rails but that's the price you pay for a MUCH better story. Game requires some horsepower; if you're thinking that it may be time to upgrade soon you'll probably want to wait. Some features need a little more time in the oven so unless you're a Battletech junky like me you'll probably want to wait a few months for patches to flesh things out. No Guts, No Galaxy

If you are a Mechwarrior/BattleTech lore fan you are GONNA GET UPSET at the story. This feels like ComStar anti-clan propaganda. You are also still likely to buy it. If its your first MechWarrior I promise the mechbay isn't typically this bad, I expect it it get fixed. Mech go boom, explosion very bright and pretty. Mechwarriors likely to MechWarrior. My only concern is I have not yet seen an Urbie. I can't live without my trashcan.

Quick Run Down for the first hour: +Much more story driven and focused than recent entries into the series +Beautiful graphics and game design overall +Combat feels smooth and natural, especially with experience in previous Mechwarrior games +Excellent Sound =Strange character design, can feel somewhat uncanny =Mech pacing feels unusual, especially with previous experience -Poor optimization, framerate chugs and character 'shake' in close-ups -Without Mechwarrior experience, overall learning curve can feel very unguided and difficult to grasp and comprehend -Models of mechs overall leave some to be desired, can feel crude and 'raw' compared to previous entries Overall, very excited for the most recent release in a long loved franchise, and enjoying my experience thus far. Recommend for any newcomer and returning veteran alike.
