Games like this are why reviews being either "recommend" or "not recommend" is an imperfect situation at times. The story is lacking, but coming from MW5: Mercs, it feels like a refreshing improvement. Edit: After playing both endings of the story... they're both pretty bad. The story does NOT make this game. The Bears DLC is better, but it also has a pretty lame ending. Hopefully Wolves gives as an actually good story capped off with an actually good ending. Edit 2: It didn't. The cutscenes... actually exist this time, rather than... not. The graphics are a solid step up. The gameplay is more challenging, though that may be because 1. I was running mods for Mercs and 2. the missions seem to be noticeably longer in most cases, so more chances to get shot up. The problem is that the difficulty comes from a vast majority of missions being long, winding hallways filled with 20x the tonnage of mechs vs what you can bring. Later on, you will go entire missions without seeing a single light-mech. You will often have armor in the red, be begging for a repair bay or just for the mission to end, only to have someone hop on the radio and inform you more enemies are inbound and then multiple assault mechs come out of a dropship. Sometimes that dropship is also shooting at you. Meanwhile you are out of ammo in one of your weapons. But, you probably bought the game because you want to pilot big, stompy mechs and shoot other mechs to pieces. This game delivers you a preponderance of enemy mechs to shoot at. As for the other big draw, mech customization, it is... OK. You are definitely more limited than I like, especially after running modded Mercs, but it also in a way turns it into a puzzle for you to figure out, so there is SOME benefit from the limitations, as it makes you think. That said, I agree with the complaints that the constraints are annoying because almost every mech variant has just... wasted weapon slots. There are scarce few mechs that can be highly specialized to a certain weapon type. Many have a full mix of ballistic/missile/energy, that leaves you coming up a little short in every category. There are variants that avoid this shortcoming, just not as many as I would like. So I would call customization either a wash, or a slight let-down depending on how much you appreciate the "puzzle" aspect of figuring out how to make things work within those tight constraints. The combat is solid, but like I said, it is usually just a grueling death-march for 90% of missions that often leaves you exhausted by the end, so can become a bit tedious. However, I realized far too late how valuable pulling up the tactical map and issuing orders through it can be. It saved me big time on the last two missions. It is not generally necessary to succeed, but does add a nice layer to the combat sometimes which might help ease the monotony of the missions for some. Lastly, the story. It is... not great. It is a very slow burn with not a great payoff. Most missions are just focused on the objective of that mission and can feel divorced from any overarching plot. Many times I would pause and ask myself "wait, what IS the overarching plot, here? Where is this all going?" Well where it was going was a surprise, and not a great one. I will not spoil it, but the "overarching plot" is very small in scale compared to what you might expect and leaves you feeling like nothing was really accomplished in the end. To be fair, from what I have learned over time, this is... kinda a very Battletech way for things to go. It seems a lot of conflicts in the universe just result in everyone being battered back to square one, but... in this case, it was done in a pretty unsatisfying way for me. Every single arc of the story ends with almost nothing having been truly accomplished. In terms of gameplay and visuals, this is currently the pinnacle of what is available for stompy mechs. Yes there's also Armored Core, which I love, but that is a very different style of mech compared to Battletech. In terms of story and mission design... well I am glad I brought up Armored Core, because that is a much better example doing both well. You don't even see the faces of the characters in AC6... or... any of the games, perhaps(?), and yet it at least feels a bit more cohesive with a clearer direction of where things are headed. Speaking of the characters, we really did not get enough of them. You cannot even interact with them outside of missions and cutscenes, so your ability to bond with and care about them is going to be very hit or miss, and I can see why some people find most of them boring if not outright unlikable. It is actually hilarious how each character in your "Star" (squad) literally gets like a single one-on-one conversation with the main character, like they were checking off boxes to say "OK, now it is this one's turn for a bit of character development." Aside from that, they rarely get more than generic mission chatter during gameplay though I guess you might notice SOME patterns with what they say in that chatter over time. I say get it on sale. It still delivers solid mech gameplay with great visuals, it is just everything surrounding that is a huge mixed bag. And while we cannot give the game too many points for mods, it IS nice that there is official mod support via official mod tools, and with what Mercs got, I have some hope for Clans getting cool stuff going forward.

Okay, So I wanted to hate this game because of how bad my initial run went but I'm gonna be fair and recommend it because I ended up having a good time in the long run. TL;DR Good story aspects, BAD mechwarrior/Battletech game. This game is a linear shooter wearing the skin of Battletech. that being said.... holy ♥♥♥♥♥ this game has some issues in balance, like SERIOUS balance issues. I came in fresh off a MW5 mercs playthrough and boy oh boy was that a HUGE mistake. Take all that MW5 knowledge and throw it out the window because these games arn't even related. Some observations and annoyances in no particular order. First, the almost pointless mechlab and resource management in the game. Money is worthless because you will always have plenty and you will almost never need to spend it in large amounts. The "market" is also pointless because you buy equipment in the mechlab when you create a load out, so the extra market page has no actual use. Said Loadout setup is also kind of annoying, instead of individually customizing your mech you have to create a loadout, save it, then apply it. It's a bit confusing if you're used to literally any other Battletech/Mechwarrior game. Mechs CAN be bought but you also "buy" mechs with honor which is the only resource that matters. You use said honor to unlock mechs, which you also get a free one with each unlock, so you WILL have a few dozen mechs without ever spending a dime of your money, granted you WILL buy some mechs, but not until the mid/end game when you buy 4 extra direwolves to roflstomp all enemies. Those will be the last mechs you ever use because any other mech becomes suicidal in later missions. Each mission raises you tonnage limit and also the average tonnage of your enemies so its ALWAYS go big or go home tonnage wise. This leads to the pointless upgrade systems, the mech upgrades are just you unnerfing your own mechs, because yes, they are hugely nerfed, most weapons have almost half the actual max range they should, fire slower than they should, and don't do nearly enough damage for what they are. So all upgrades are just you making your stuff NOT suck. That being said, inner sphere enemies are way too strong and the game is designed to always remove any advantage your clan mech would normally have. Clan stuff is lighter, longer range, and harder hitting at the expense of heat, which they have better heat sinks so that's moot. Every single map has you engaging mechs in tight canyons, urban sprawls, or semi underground tunnels. These forced tunnel runs boils every fight into making a firing line and slow walking your way to victory. You rarely get any room to maneuver and nearly every single fight STARTS at under 500 meters. You are basically always inside AC20 ranges for everything. Your superior range doesn't exist, your weapons are trash until late game, and your AI pilots are nothing more than additional walking guns. As a single player you have no reason to EVER use the battle map because your AI pilots WILL NOT USE MECHS CORRECTLY. They have some insanely unbalanced timer for firing weapons so they will largely only shoot 1 weapon at a time once every 10-15 seconds max. Because of this YOU the player will ALWAYS be the primary target for the enemy AI, a carry over from MW5. I havn't proved this in any way but I strongly suspect that inner sphere mechs are better armored or at least have some sort of passive buffs that lowers my damage as some lighter mechs can take 6-10 AC 20's to the CT and not even touch structure. In the lore this isn't an issue because I can engage IS mechs from twice the distance...except for this game, again, almost all engagements are point blank hallway fights by design and unless this is luthien your weapons probably cant reach past 800 meters anyways. The Character traits are stupid, the ONLY skill that matters is evasion, that's it. And for whatever reason each pilot can only gain affinity for seemingly random mechs, insead of, idk, gaining affinity by USING a mech? guess I am asking for the moon there. luckily almost everyone can be trained for Direwolves and as ive stated thats the only worthwhile mech. So yeah, all that stuff above is pointless, and doesn't need to exist. you can play stock mechs with no issue, your AI's dont get much better than what they start as and all rewards are almost pointless. Another gripe is the difficulty curve, it's jacked, it starts off easy, becomes insanely difficult because most clan medium and light mechs SUCK, your tonnage limit is arbitrarily low for most of the game, and then it becomes a turkey shoot when you can finally have a full star of assaults. There is NO REASON TO EVER BRING LIGHTER MECHS ONCE YOU UNLOCK HEAVIER MECHS. If you do they will absolutely die after the 4th-5th wave of IS assault mechs gets dropped on you. But don't worry, they will also send dozens of tanks and choppers with larger health pools than some light mechs. The game devs KNOW this, otherwise they wouldn't give you repair stations literally every single mission, often less than 1000 meters apart. Ammo is also kind of stupid issue, stock clan mechs have very small ammo pools so you will find yourself running dry constantly if you try to run a stock missile build ( some stock autocannon builds as well). You CAN add more ammo but this is VERY restricted because of the oddball mechlab mechanics that really limit your ability to edit mechs. ( the devs know this as well because you literally find ammo lying around the map in the form of scan spots ). Omipods are locked behind progression so you have to use the stock mechs regardless to be able to unlock the better omnipods, but that doesn't matter because, just like the mech skills, by the time you actually start to upgrade your mech you'll get a bigger better mech and never touch the old one ever again. I hate FAKE PROGRESSION. and this game has it in spades, nearly everything about the progression is pointless. Just play in story mode and treat it like a walking simulator (with giant stompy robots) and enjoy the story, which is actually decently done and helps flesh out the rather sparse Clan lore (RIP HBS Battletech and its never produced Clan DLC). Just really wish they'd found some way to tie this into MW5 so you could at least sandbox a little with your clanners in any way. I'm sure i'm missing all sorts of other weird annoying things but this has gone on for too long already. Love the story, Hate the Game.

MW 5: Clans is a great representation of what being a Clanner is all about. If the Clans are your favorite thing about the Mechwarrior/Battletech universe, you should pick this up, no questions asked. If you've read any of the novels or just have spent a lot of time reading Sarna.net, they nail Clans dialogue and what you would imagine what a Clanner speaking would be like. However, if you're picking this up because you enjoyed MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries, there's some things to consider before you dive in. This game is a lot more linear and follows a strict campaign progression. You get some choice in certain segments to do certain missions first or later, but that's about as much agency as you get. You will not have the vast open map that Mercenaries offers. You can replay missions for farming purposes, but honestly that can get "boring" quick as you're just going to be replaying things you've already done. You can fully customize your Star to suit your playstyle and the Omnimechs have all the features you'd expect and are very flexible in build variety. They also do an okay job at showing Clan mechs probably shouldn't be getting into slugging matches with Innersphere Mechs if possible because Clan Mechs have the advantage at medium and long ranges. Ultimately though, the enemy AI just rushes you because that's what the AI does sadly. Sometimes an AWESOME will stay at range and try to pelt you with their PPCs, but it seems to happen more by accident than deliberate logic. You get much better options to micro-manage your Star (consists of 5 mechs vs. the Innsershpere's Lance of 4 mechs) than you do in Mercenaries. If you're equipping one of your Lance mates as your LRM platform, you can direct them much better to avoid them running into melee range with the enemy, which is a very appreciated improvement from Mercenaries. I hope they insert this command system into Mercs at some point as a QoL feature! So if you enjoyed Mercenaries, should you also purchase Clans? It's hard for me to give it a firm "Yes," but I think there's enjoyment to be had here. However, there will be plenty that don't because it's a pretty big shift away from how Mercenaries is effectively an open sandbox game vs. Clans being a narrative driven linear campaign. If you could only purchase Clans or Mercenaries, you should purchase Mercenaries from a value perspective, and you can ultimately experience Clan mechs thanks to the recent Shadow of Kerensky DLC for MW5: Mercenaries.

I have to give this game a sideways thumb but mostly positive. The graphics and interface are definitely improved from MW5: Mercenaries, and getting to play a pivotal role in the Clans' invasion of the Inner Sphere is cool, buuuuuuut: * The MechWarrior AI has apparently not advanced since MW4 . . . which came out 25 freaking years ago. Seriously, your MechWarrior buddies have no intelligence. They can be directed to follow you, attack a single target, or stand in one place and shoot. When following you or attacking a target, they engage in an awkward Texas two-step, shuffling back and forth and getting in each others' way and yours. In an alternate universe, they would know how to do things like flank and maneuver behind cover, but no. This is Mechwarrior 5's most unforgivable sin. * The missions in the campaign feel like a monotonous slog through waves of enemies, with not much variation between mission styles. I also have an issue with Smoke Jaguar Clan's 'Mech design doctrine of speed over all. I would love to see multiple speed classes in a given tonnage, allowing you to choose between speed and armament, but that's mostly not the case. In a star with human MechWarriors, it's easy to envision how effective mobility could be, but the the AI MechWarriors unable to use mobility effectively, the capability is wasted. On the plus side, the story is much more interesting in Clans vs. Mercenaries, and the character animations are much more lively. I like the game, but I would love to see more work put into improving the MechWarrior AI.

While it doesn’t offer the open-ended gameplay of MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries, Clans delivers an incredibly detailed and lore-accurate portrayal of the Clan Invasion. It offers a rare and precious glimpse into a part of the BattleTech universe that, until now, had only lived in my imagination. If you're a fan of BattleTech lore, I cannot recommend this game highly enough.
