It's ugly, clunky, and loaded with obtuse mechanics, but it's a classic. The Caster of Magic version does introduce some quality of life improvements, but a bunch of the customization options don't seem to actually work. Assuming you can get past the lack of a build queue, I'd stick with the community patched version. The various races are not created equally- some can fly, some have bonuses to production or gold, some have a deeper tech tree than others, some natively produce mana, some have higher unrest rates. You basically just have to find what works for you. Personally, I like to create a custom wizard with the warlord, myrran, and sorcery mastery traits and as many sorcery books as you can take with the points you have left, and then pick either dwarves or draconians for my starting town. Mass invisibility will carry you a long way, especially on a full army of flying hammerhands

The most classic of classics to ever classic. I watched my dad play this after i was born for 2 years and then (poorly) imitated him to for it to be the very first video game i ever played. Its a well-known cult classic in the 4x strategy space, but what makes it so amazing and outstanding? was it the juxtaposition of broody bit music with bright, colorful UI? Deep civ-building mixed with surprisingly satisfying RPG elements? the satisfaction of using your overwhelming and in-depth game knowledge to crush your opposition under your heel? or the fantasy of slinging not only a fireball or 2 but many spells of varied types and uses along with fantastical creatures of myth in a world filled with magic and opportunity, yet still randomized every playthrough? the answer is its all of them. and if the dozens of failed "spiritual successors" are any indication, nothing will ever be quite like it.

Master of Magic is the most enjoyable fantasy-empire-building game ever, with a great balance between detailed spells and units and not-too-complicated mechanics. Best of all, you can choose from ready-made wizards or create your own. Give it an hour, and you'll be playing next year.

MoM was an absolute blast when it was released, and it was also innovative. It pushed gaming well beyond its limits. Unfortunately it is now extremely dated, and you're not likely to get any enjoyment out of it unless you have the nostalgia (which, thankfully, I have a whole lot of). Recruiting your favorite heroes out of a large cast, leveling them up, and equipping them with artifacts and weapons you found in a dungeon is still fun. MoM takes many elements from Magic: the Gathering, including the colors, and many of the spells and creatures. There is much city-building, but cities must be defended. This is likely the game's most frustrating aspect; you'll have enemy wizards, and the game is setup to feature politics, negotiating and trade between them. But no matter what you do, all of them will end up declaring war on you every time, making all that diplomacy pointless. Play this if you're looking to capture that old gaming feeling, or if you're interested in an important bit of gaming history. Otherwise you're likely to view it as a frustrating old game.

A TBS Classic from the Golden Age of strategy games. Easy to pick up, but hard to Master. Modded over the years; the additions are well balanced and rounded, heaps of new options since release. Difficulty tiers with options and scales right into endgame. Slitherine have done something that has been on every 90s TBS gamers mind since all these unfortunate remake failures keep dropping with weird gameplay, balance breaking changes, and lacking that "next turn" quality - ported the original to Windows. Well done guys. The lack of modern aesthetics may put off some younger players, but def try the originals if you enjoy the modern remakes - it is often hard to recapture the same magic.
