I completed every main mission, unlocked all parts, gotten all achievements, and did many side quests in my 23hr before writing this review. TLDR: Game is a very good robotic builder game, main loop is good but a bit repetitive, looking forward to more updates. This game can be split into 3 types of missions. 1. Unique transit, these objects may have rules around them such as can't touch the ground (ice cream), time limits (ice), extremely awkward to move and deliver (wind turbine blade), etc. These missions are the peak of this game and are the ones you'll spend time creating unique rovers for. This game exceeds during these missions with fun memorable challenges. 2. Building missions, these missions offer a break from the standard transit loop, they build up the infrastructure and can greatly increase the ease of transiting objects in future, the main challenge is less of the building and more of the landscape and geography of mars, having to fly you rover over the cliffs and valleys trying to time your placement to get it just right can be a fun challenge to creating efficient placements, or you could just go around. 3. Filler transit, these are primary side quests that can be ignored, but you will have to complete a few of these to build up enough cash, or to unlock certain parts. They are okay. It gets repetitive and you'll soon have an everything rover capable of transiting 90% of objects with ease. I can't speak to the multiplayer experience as I don't have friends, but this game does seem like it would lend itself well to it. I am looking forward to future updates as the game is fleshed out with more content. It is a must buy if its on sale, and if not I would still recommend it.

The world's second (third?) Strand-type game. Extremely charming game with frequent updates, very fun with and without friends.

I'm a big fan of games that let you build vehicles with a set of parts, like Kerbal or Besieged, and this little gem in my opinion is worth the price if you're a fan of that kind of game. Even though it's early access, it feels like a full game. The quests are fun to do and exploring the world is actually way more fun than I thought it was gonna be. There's a lot of little buildings to stumble across and unlocking more areas of the map feels rewarding and natural. The building aspect of the game is really good too. You can even toggle infinite funding and just build whatever you want. Watch the trailer for this game if you haven't. The game is absolutely as cool as it looks!

So, I just read a review about this game not being about building machines to do cool things, and suggesting the game is about building machines to traverse distances with complex cargo. First, while this is... literally correct... it is also literally incorrect. Much of the challenge of space travel is building a machine to do something that is quite simple on Earth, and then be able to travel distances. While it is debatable that the journey's are long and boring, as this is sort of the idea of "Mars" (there's nothing there besides the terrain itself... at least that we're aware of) this is also the challenge. While there are certainly issues with the gameplay (some that I have specific complaints about being addressed at this very moment) the game is in bloody early access, and while a lot of devs are using this as a crutch to just pump out garbage. This is not the case here. So... what is the game? Honestly... it reminds me a lot of a (now) old game called fantastic contraption, mixed with KSP? You do need to build some "contraption" as it were, to accomplish whatever mission you've accepted. If you want something that pays out well, generally you will be going much longer distances or dealing with more complex (physics) cargo. Carrying 5 apples that each have their own physics across any distance on Mars is going to be challenging. If it's 5km it may even be maddening. Overall, the game is done quite well. I find the graphics, and style to be quite beautiful, and the music seems to respond and react to what it is you're doing at the time. Also excellent. You get a lot of neat components to mess with, electrics, hydraulics, pneumatics etc. To me... it reminds me much more of the Lego sets from the years before, where a lot of creativity was required using fairly basic components rather than having every type of specialized piece. Ultimately, you need to work with the components that both exist, and are unlocked. I will say that while the people with opinions different than mine are perfectly entitled to those, I think that the game, as it is, is fully playable, pretty fun if you like creative building. Even at the full price, I'm ok with the purchase.

The deviousness of some of the quest items will make you scream but the sheer charm of the game will quickly make you forget and carry on. Despite being early access the game already feels well polished and involved. Unlike say, Besiege, the world is one open space that evolves over time rather than isolated challenges. While it doesn't have a story in a direct sense you can witness one unfolding as you help construct various buildings all over the red planet. Sensible priority buildings like greenhouses, factories and labs eventually give way to building race tracks and tourism. Some of these buildings even having interactive elements once the job is done, the race track being the best current example. When you put the effort into painting and decorating a machine it you find it really pops against the dusty martian landscape. The way the building menu invokes old toy and building instructions with the off-white, yellows and clean uncluttered look just makes me wish I had more Lego Technic growing up. If you're an overly emotional person you may find yourself growing attached to your little creation as it stumbles and crawls through another ditch it's stuck in. You could just restart and tweak it constantly, but part of you wants it to endure. To see if this iteration of your paint carrying robot can make it this time. After another hour of crying both happy and sad tears as it pivots back and forth on the edge of a ravine you decide to screw it and strap another rocket to the back. And that's just beautiful.
