rulebook claims this is old-school board game inspired - but the gameplay is really just managing spreadsheets and organizing troops. so while it may be board game inspired, the actual gameplay is overly complicated and fiddly for what it is. game doesn't give you direct control of battles, but also doesn't provide enough tools to do meaningful diplomacy - KOEI games from 35 years ago had better systems and were more fun. raise the best army you can, smash it to pieces, sue for peace - repeat until 1820, the end. AI can see through fog-of-war so always knows exactly where to attack or where your ships are patrolling, while you have to make guesses or send in fast troops to scout. visually and thematically MotE isn't as well put together as Sengoku, which came out 2 years earlier, in fact it seems to take some steps back (Sengoku let you appoint ministers and recruit leaders if I remember correctly?) Also, just some basic historical errors in the starting scenario with regards to army strength, base morale and disposition to other powers - but nothing too egregious. the factions should all be very asymmetrical, but their units don't have much flavor or distinction. okay, that's a lot of complaints, why is it still a recommended game for me? because it is a "what-if" sandbox for a Napoleonic era nerd - I can start a game with Sweden and see what might happen if I tried to take on the Ottoman empire and gobble up north Africa. Or try to play as a minor German state and see if we can survive as an independent until 1820. I dont think it is a very good "game", especially if you are looking for a grand strategy like EU, or a tactical wargame like Total War Napoleon - but it is a halfway decent sandbox with a light Napoleonic flavor - and for that I think it is worth checking out.

From 2013, but really the first of the current crop of Paradox titles (third with the new Clausewitz engine, but the first I think that really uses it to full advantage). Definitely a good gateway/starter into Paradox for wargamers. If you enjoy this I think you'll enjoy HoI4/CK3/EU4/Vic3. If like me you jad only ever tried the pre-2013 Paradox games and they didn't click with you, this might be your onramp back in to the current franchise.

Underrated actually very good game that the community dogpiled to an early grave but is now remembered fondly. Just like I:R. This game is worth your time, especially if you were playing PDX games around this time and don't mind the old UI paradigm.
