Not perfect, but Maniac is exactly what I wanted it to be. It is a love letter to the original Grand Theft Auto but with no story quests, more weapons, and different characters that each have individual stat/unlock progression. Each game is a GTA kill frenzy that more or less plays out the same regardless of character, yet offers enough options and Achievements to incentivize the player to use certain weapons, target certain foes, or hijack certain vehicles during a single play session. I'm 9 hours in at time of writing, and can vouch that the asking price, on sale or not, is apt for what you get.

It's a fun roguelike that's basically if the original GTA just focused on the actiony bits. Overall I didn't find it to have as much lasting appeal as I had hoped, as despite the different characters it always feels like I'm doing the same thing. To be blunt, it got boring pretty quickly. I don't think the game's bad at all though. It does the driving and shooting really well, and overall it's fun. That fun level just doesn't last long for me. It's certainly worth the full price of 5 smackeroos though.

This is to a full video game what an anecdote is to a full story. There's nothing wrong with an anecdote: but if it's good, it might leave you wanting more. There is a solid base here, and for such a low price it's an easy game to recommend if you love goofing around in GTA with a max wanted level. At the end of the day, I have fun with it in short bursts every now and then. I could never imagine playing this for hours on end, but it scratches a certain itch. Maniac is easy and mindless fun. P.S. Just make sure you DON'T use auto aim or the easy driving controls... They are terrible. Turn them off in the settings and thank me later. Lots of negative reviews seem to miss this option.

Good but ultimately a little shallow. Shows promise so a tentative thumbs up, but needs that extra oomph I think. Another "I wish Steam had a neutral option for reviews" type game. The main problem is that level ups don't really give you anything interesting. The closest is the vehicle upgrades (which go away when you lose that car anyway), but all the other choices are the same as the base upgrades you can buy on your characters. As such, there's no fun synergies to develop, no odd choices to make, just "get stronger in specific area". One can imagine some incredible possibilities for chaos, like "give all taxicabs bombs" or "mobsters now attack police", but none of that is in the game. Other small gripes: Hitting air targets is a pain in the ass. There's no isometric-angle camera like in the trailer, just 3 varieties of "overhead". There's no map features like Pay'n'Spray to aim for. If you have finite ammo, getting more ammo for your gun is nigh-impossible. Cop cars and the like act very strangely - they disgorge 2-3 enemies, then sorta hover just outside your hijack range??? Hijacking in general is annoying unless it's literally a parked or trapped car. I do like the hyper-destructive experience, and I think Maniac has extremely strong fundamentals, it just needs some fun "crazy" upgrades to spice up the experience, better hijacking, and a more fleshed-out city.

Absolutely worth it. Excellent job. The game gets out of your way and just puts you right in it. This is a great example of exactly what other games SHOULD be doing. Highly recommend this one!
