Ah Majesty. For those that don't know this nifty little title, it's a game that came out nearly a quarter of a century ago, back when the Real-Time Strategy genre was king. Majesty offered an alternate take. Not quite an RTS, as the player was never given proper control of the troops. The player is a king of some lovingly satirical version of a fantasy kingdom, responsible for building up his town and inviting heroes to come and inhabit it, with the promise of adventure and, of course, pay. The heroes then could be influenced to take out a diverse cast of fantasy baddies attacking from various directions. That made Majesty a strange combination of medieval fantasy town sim and tower defense, wearing the clothes of an RTS. The game has a lot of character. Very charming graphics and memorable voice overs. I could always quote this game and often did, ever since I first played it. The heroes and monsters are also quite great conceptually. From the incredibly effective female Paladins, to their grotesquely brutish alter egos the Warriors of Discord. I was always a bit disappointed that you couldn't hire all of them in one map, as certain heroes don't like the presence of others. Truth be told the game is not particularly deep gameplay wise. Once the kingdom is set up and starts going, there isn't really much for the player to do, not much of a challenge present or any meaningful, organised resistance. But hey, it's always fun getting to that point and I have played many a level just to let it run and enjoy the charming atmosphere and sounds. I remember Majesty confused a few people back in the day. Expecting an RTS and getting, well, this bizarre combo instead. But I was always happy to have played this game. The Gold HD edition works quite fine on my semi-modern PC, I had no issue playing in windowed mode either and it was a great opportunity for some easy-going fun. Anyone who likes games from that era, the late 90s and early 00s, I'd recommend this game to. Yeah, it's not exactly a masterpiece, but it's certainly worth trying, even if only as a charming curiosity.

Imagine if you had a million sims trapped in Dungeons and Dragons. It's basically that but like a really really primitive version of that concept. You get heroes who run around and do stuff of their own will and you focus on managing buildings and helping them. As someone who gets overwhelmed at RTS games this is a softer one and I think there needs to be more games like this.

Use to play this game in my younger days and still enjoy it, wished they made a more modern version of this with to days graphics and such. Great story telling and gotta love the sim feature aspect of the hero's.

A fun and interesting game with a gameplay style that is - so far as I'm aware - entirely unique, which I've adored since I first played it before Steam even launched. This game comes bundled with both the original Gold Edition, and Gold HD. I'm afraid I have to say that you might be unable to access Gold Edition, as it seems to have a compatibility issue with current patches of Windows 11 - crashing almost immediately after reaching opening credits - and Steam does not work correctly when running games in Compatibility Mode. This bit me, because most of my two-plus hours of gameplay were in Gold Edition. Fortunately, Gold HD is fully functional in Windows 11, so just fire up that version, and enjoy a very different game from any other RTS game you've ever played!
