I would still recommend this game but maybe wait for a sale. The combat is the strongest part of the game. It feels satisfying, the enemy designs are well varied and creative, beautiful UI, great music and skill/progression trees are solid. The biggest flaw is the story. Chapters feel like it's missing connective tissue. Mahou Arms reaches interesting narrative destinations but it rarely earns the transition between them. It starts as a post-apocalyptic magical-girl resistance story and eventually dives head-first into souls, artificial consciousness, ancient magic, a techno-scientific religious cult, biblical mythology, blood harvesting and cosmic conflict. Those ideas are interesting but the game doesn't give you enough time to sit with them. Big lore dumps are casually brushed past in conversations. Characters seem to know things that the player was never properly told. Sometimes it needs another 5 minute scene to make a moment feel earned. I noticed in the Community Hub that the developer did a separate release to add 10 H-Scenes. Maybe that content is the real selling point for the demographic they were aiming for? Personally it's not my thing and I think some of that development effort should have gone into filling in the gaps in the story and developing characters. The game could have been an 8/10 but as it stands I give it a 6/10

For those interested the patcher from the game's website does work, but I hope the devs just add a steam patch to the store page like other mature games have done as of late. I've been following the development of this game for a long time, long enough that another game I was a fan of finished its development twice(thanks to bad publisher decisions), released on two platforms, failed to gain traction and finally died. All in the time it took for this game to be released into 1.0. With that in mind you'd think the game would come out in a more polished state; smooth gameplay, no major bugs, and all the features they've been working on and detailing on their patreon and patch notes for years. I too would have liked that to be the case. The truth of the matter is that this game released to 1.0 with a number of issues. A lot of them were things that I feel like should have been found within the first hour of playtesting the build. The most notable and the most glaring to me being that the chapter one boss could kill you after she locked you out of actions by talking once you beat her. There are of course a lot of other things like getting softlocked in later levels because the enemies wouldn't spawn in a combat zone, so the barriers wouldn't lower, but the chapter one boss bug is so egregious that I'm sure a lot of people were completely turned off by it if they haven't already been keeping tabs on the game. They are working on it so hopefully that gets fixed. As I finished the game today I saw an update was getting pushed out, so maybe it's in that one. Now I do think the game is still worth playing. Is it worth the full price? I don't think so, and I'm also a fan of magical girls in dark settings. I do think it's worth playing though. I think for most people it will appeal more during sales. Start to finish, if you don't run into any issues, it's probably a 6-8 hour game. The combo system is okay, it's definitely nothing to write home about. There are a decent number of activities aside from the main game, though I wouldn't say they're particularly motivating to complete. Most of them boil down to collectibles when you take out the mechanics involved. And like I'm sure many others have noted, it feels like a lot of content got sidelined to work on featuring patreon stuff. I hope they deliver on the costumes and additional story content and don't just leave the game to become abandonware.

Post Launch Review What is Mahou Arms? It's essentially a bare bones version of Nier with Devil May Cry combat. It has great music that is fitting for a AA game, but the story, environment, and voice acting feel incomplete. It tries to be too many things and a decent effort was put into what it tries to be, but falls short. However, depending on the developers, if more polish is applied over time, then I think there's enough of a framework here to build a great game. What is combat like? At It's core, it's an action combat game designed around chaining combos with the mechanic that the more combos you can chain WITHOUT taking damage, then the more damage you deal. Other reviews mention about enemies being HP sponges, but they kind of have to be in order for this core game mechanic to work. A decent skill system and spell system for a AA game. There is no additional weapons to collect. There are no bonus items or power ups to equip - just health & mana potions. The enemies aren't very smart and I expected a bit more for a single player game. However, they aren't dumb as rocks like I've experienced in many MMOs. There is a small variety of monsters to fight, but I think the variety is just enough to meet my expectations for a AA game. The combos are sufficient for a AA game. Most of the combos are press X a bunch of times, then switch to Y. However, if the core mechanic was combat, then having combos that mix up X, Y, and Left stick - like Stellar Blade - would've made it much more interesting. What's the story like? I played the story to chapter 7 and it was alright. It's not the main focus that this game tries to deliver, but it's good enough to keep me pushing through the game. There are a couple of side quests that were fetch quests that made you go back and forth between locations and those felt tedious. The different chapters add a different variety to the game play similar to Nier. For example, there is a chapter that plays out like a retro 2D space shooter and another chapter that plays like a walking simulator. These add a bit of variety, but for me, I wish the game only focused on the combat. Whenever, I had to play these different chapters, it felt like a chore that I wanted to rush through to get back to the combat. What's the environment like? The environment is sparse - it's post apocalyptic... but it's a little too sparse that it seems unfinished. A lot of effort was put in to make decently sized maps, but they're mostly empty. I enjoy exploration and the maps are interesting enough to explore, but there is very little reward when going off the beaten path. For a game about combat, I think more spawn points for mobs need to be around. Music It's fantastic. Performance Runs well. Since it's a UE4 game, you can download a modded Engine.ini file to stabilize the frame rate and get more FPS. I'm running it on Linux with Proton-GE without any problems and also got ReShade working with it. If the devs could add a DLSS option, it would probably run with OptiScale. My final thoughts The price seems too high for what you get. I would only pay full price if you really want to support the developers in the hopes that it helps them fund more updates or a sequel. For what you're getting, I think the price should be closer to the $15-$20 USD range. However, that may change depending on whether the developers plan to add more polish to the game. However, expect to get about 15-20 hours of entertainment. There are better options out there for a game with good combat and story with the same length at much cheaper prices. My first thought would be any of the recent Tomb Raider games from the past 10 years. -- 8< ---- original early access review ---- It's a good casual AA game to relax to. Not stressful at all. If you're only here for the game, I'd buy it on sale. Otherwise, I'd pay full price just to support the studio and hope they get enough funding for a more polished sequel. It's got a good foundation for something better. Combat : Combat revolves around figuring out your combos and building up your rating to maximize damage. Enemies are pretty dumb. Enemies have a long time to kill, but I think that's by design to allow for you to build up a good combo. Challenge : It's pretty Easy. It's by far the easiest action combat game I've played. Exploration : It's Linear. The environment is kind of empty, but it's good enough for a AA game. Graphics : It's good. Animations are fantastic, models look ok - probably could use a few more polygons. Reminds me of a lower budget AI Limit . Music : It's fantastic. Price : It's on the high side, but I like to support smaller dev studios. The Early Access was 8-9 hours of fun. The game costs about the same to go to the movies with a friend - so I think it's pretty good. It kept my interest. For context, I'll usually know if a game doesn't interest me by hour 5, so I think this one did alright. I am looking for the full release to see where the story goes.
