Marchen Forest: Mylne and the Forest Gift is a game about a fluffy-eared girl dabbling in alchemy and hitting monsters with a fishing pole. As of this review I have not beaten it, but did put a solid 5 hours in before losing interest for other games. Might return to it later, we'll see. Played using a controller. Difficulty is easy in the first half and tedious/medium in the second. Good game for kids. - This is the Legacy version of the game, with lesser graphics and less game involved. The reason I played this instead of the bigger, cooler game is because my wallet is a moth breeding ground and it was on sale at the time. I don't know if I can justify playing the legacy ver. at full price when a better version is available, too. - Marchen Forest is split into two halves. One is about talking to villagers in a small plot of land, gathering ingredients, with some fishing in there. The other half is a dungeon crawler with three major parts. They feel like two entirely separate games with the same character. It's a bit jarring. -- The village half is nice. I got a weird Animal Crossing vibe to it without the houses/furniture. For as limited as the area is, there's a decent amount to uncover/do for 2 or 3 hours. Lots of weird animal people to solve problems for. -- The dungeon is a slog. Fights are rpg-style with a battle screen and timed turns. Monsters are very limited. There are three floors with 10-12 levels per floor that can vary. Once you go into the dungeon levels, you are stuck until you either die, use an 'escape' tool, or conquer the floor. If you die you are sent back to the beginning and lose your treasures. I was doing great until I got to Floor 2 then the difficulty curve slapped me in the face. The solution is to repeat floor 1 until you get better armor/lvl up. That was about when the fun in 'finding the mystery at the end' puffed out like a sad, little candle for me. Got near the end of Floor 2 before giving up. --- For both parts of the game, the graphics are basic if a little outdated. Reminded me of an action rpg on the DS. The music is solid. The characters are memorable, especially Mylne and Bard. - Another review brought up weird bugs. I didn't come across any during my playthrough. Everything started up and closed fine. The character moved. Nothing went weird outside of the ramen. - Upon starting up the game everything was in Japanese. To change it to whatever your respective first language is if you aren't well-versed in Japanese, go down to where you see the Japan flag and click the button a few times until you can read everything successfully. - There is DLC you can buy. It is not translated. In summary, it's your money. The game is unique enough to be enjoyable but rough about the edges and aged like a funky, mushroomy cheese. There is a better version of this game on steam; if you want the full Mylne experience, go with that one. I liked the first half of the Legacy version and didn't have the patience for the second half.

First of I really love the game, it’s very cute and fun, I just came over to say that there is a little issue, I was trying to see if I could climb the ladder behind rocky, and it turns out there’s missing collision. I accidentally went thru the tree and fell down. I could walk under the water and stuff but I cant get back up, so I have to reload.

It is a simple but lovely JRPG. It doesn't need complicated control or tons of content to drag player into the game. We definitely need more games like this. Things I like: -Cute protagonist -Cartoon-ish art style -Simple mechanics -ADORABLE AS HECK This is definitely a hidden treasure.

You ever see a game, and you know you'll enjoy it before you even play it? For me, this was one of those games. Despite the N64-tier graphics on a 2018 title, and the character illustrations vaguely misaligned with my personal tastes, I found myself called to play this game, and I don't regret it. This is actually basically two games in one. The first game, Mylne and the Forest Gift, is basically a slice of life game, not unlike Animal Crossing. You do technically have the objective of gathering alchemy materials, but what you're really doing is meeting and interacting with the denizens of the forest. A smooth, relaxing start. The second game, Mylne and the Strange Cavern, is a roguelite dungeon crawler RPG. The simple, streamlined mechanics make the transition painless, and despite some difficulty pacing issues (particularly between Floors 2 and 3), the game mostly avoids being needlessly punishing. The story these games (mostly the second, where the most lore is revealed) tell is somewhat simple and cliche, but no less charming for it. Overall, the game does have its flaws, and it won't blow you away, but it was just the sort of experience I was craving.
