This is the most unique jrpg i have ever played. While the gameplay is nothing revolutionary, (its grid turn based), The mechanics and gimmicks from each story makes it different and special from the rest. Having 8 mini small bits jrpgs with unique style and tone of not only the cast, but the world setting as well. You will go from normal rpg-like experience, to sci-fi survival horror, to stealth, to even fighting. It is a well crafted hidden gem that everyone should get to play.

This game made me feel. The characters are human (mostly), well written, and believable. Each of them strives toward their goal, to be better, to obtain something out of life (aren't we all?) Their lives are full of hardship, sometimes even despair, but it's up to them (you) to overcome that. I played this in the perfect period of my life it seems, it resonated deeply with me. If you care and are sensible to what i mentioned, do yourself a favor, play this gem to very end.

Enjoyed the first 7 chapters, a set of loosely related short stories in RPG form with greatly varying settings and tone. From a wordless caveman story to sci-fi horror to a fighting game to anime, all with great music. They're all short but that's fine, with the possible exception of the Present Day chapter. (That's it?) The graphics style is great for something mainly 2D. Then I got to chapter 8, where (avoiding spoilers) there's not just a dramatic tone shift but a ton of random battles. Then chapter 9, which combines excessive random battles with story-insignificant dungeons and forced level grinding. I lost interest at that point and might not finish the game, but to try a certain alternate route. The battle system is pretty good but I don't want to fight six identical Doom Wombats again and again, especially when it starts to feel like a punishment for exploring a cave every five seconds.

It is hard to explain why I love this game. There's no denying that Square-Enix went above and beyond resurrecting this old classic of the SNES catalog; the 2D-3D graphics are gorgeous, the rearranged soundtrack is as hype as it gets and the game has even been extended in some parts. Yet, like many older games ported nowadays, the game-play does not really stand the test of time. What does translate very well though is the sheer passion of the original team, and the game oozes of that 90's charm that so many games today are failing to re-recapture. Live A Live is a deeply flawed game, broken in so many ways but so earnest and candid in offering the player different game experiences that it manages somehow to come together at the end in such a gleeful way that it makes it hard not to get a happy smile out of the experience. Is it a good game? Is it a bad game? If you're just in the right mindset you'll maybe get past its rough edges and find a truly heartfelt adventure. Like life itself, Live A LIve is ultimately what you'll make it out to be.

If you're into JRPGs with a more traditional structure and pacing like I am, you might wanna adjust your expectations going into this game. It's essentially a collection of mini RPGs ranging from one to four hours in length. It's an interesting experimental structure where they all take place in settings with different characters, but all have the same combat system and some overlapping narrative themes. The combat is REALLY good, but most of the chapters don't really take full advantage of it. It isn't until you beat the seven starting chapters when the game really begins to put its mechanics to full use. It doesn't even start out simple and unfold into something more complex like I'm used to, it'll go up and down in complexity depending on what order you do the chapters in. It's not badly designed, but it's not exactly how I prefer things. I think each chapter before the finale is best viewed as an individual prologue to something greater, since that's basically what it is. The final chapter has so much extra stuff to do that if you go for everything, it'll probably take you about 10 hours. Not only that, but it can be worth replaying some of the other chapters on their own just to see what you can do differently and what else may carry over into the finale. Once you've gotten the whole experience in perspective, it's easy to see that it's a Hell of a time and absolutely worth a shot. (PS: contrary to popular belief, this is the game where Toby Fox got all his ideas from, not Earthbound.)
