Little Witch Nobeta is a light but worthy twist on the Souls formula for the weebishly inclined. The biggest twist in question is that Nobeta is a witch, not a melee fighter. She out-ranges most of the enemies she fights and is considerably powerful at that range, but her mana is limited and recovers very slowly on its own. She must chant to access her more powerful attacks, slowing her movement to a walk. Mana is recovered during battle by dodging accurately or physically striking the enemy with the wand. It's a simple, elegant system that encourages you to work on your timing and take risks to fight effectively. I really like how this game focuses on making the solo mage work and keeps it feeling powerful, instead of compromising by introducing too many melee options. The magic itself feels great to use. Sure, it comes in four generic flavours, but the visual and audio effects really pop and fizz. The elements each have distinct uses, both when it comes to solving puzzles and dealing with enemies at differing distances. Pulling off a perfect dodge and following up with a huge strike really does feel great. In general, the visuals are clean and polished, even if much of the design is generic high fantasy JRPG fodder. I think it's fair to say that a lot of the success of Little Witch Nobeta comes down to Nobeta herself. It's clear from her animations that a lot of work has went into making her the most adorable moe protagonist possible. She has so many little flourishes, from the way she falls over when out of stamina to how she clasps her little hands together to pray. Once a certain objective is met, Nobeta's character is considerably fleshed out, and it was great to discover that her animations also change to reflect this. It is worth noting that some of the fanservice options - such as the alternate costumes - might be objectionable to some, especially considering the protagonist's apparent youth. It should be nothing unmanageable to an anime veteran though. While Nobeta sticks out as particularly charming, the narrative is not very impressive. I can praise the decision to keep things abstract, but there's very little substance to reward the sense of mystery. There's at least no annoying JRPG exposition here, and thank goodness - the dialog between the characters plods along at a snail's pace, and the voice acting while clear isn't exactly motivated. The numerous items you can pick up contain lore, but the contents are so basic and vague that you've probably played more unique beginner D&D games. Still, there's something to be said for the game's dreamlike, simplistic tone. This is an indie release by a small team and it very much shows in its presentation and how much the assets are reused. Similar concepts, map layouts and enemy types are retread so often that the core game starts to feel like merely hallways between bosses. The bosses are good, but their difficulty is uneven - I had far more trouble with the second boss than any of the subsequent bosses. Not that any of this game is that difficult - it's harder than its cute looks might make it appear and it takes some getting used to, but while it's clearly Souls inspired, it's in no way Souls-hard. Nor does it need to be - Nobeta is a success on its own terms, but you need to weigh your expectations. I'd really like to see this team or another take this Souls-Mage concept and flesh it out, because the truth is that if you weren't taken in by the adorable protagonist and core combat like I was, then you'll probably find very little beyond them to keep you entertained.

I don't think it's worth the asking price, even if Nobeta is very cute. Buy it on sale if you can. (This is a small indie game, and I didn't expect anything more than that.) However, these points below did take away some of my enjoyment from the game: --- The story is meh, and only starts to come together if you read through the dialogue after beating bosses in the Trial Tower and also read all of the item descriptions, that is, if you bother to find them all. The world building through all of this could have been done better. To me, it's very much "anime", but I don't think that it needs to also be generic on top of all of that. The Trial Tower lore information is nice, and shows promise in improving this area of the game. --- The enemies aren't that great. There isn't much enemy variety, and a lot of them are quite lame. Broken doll, broken doll 2, broken doll 3. Ghost. Ghost with hands. Ghost with mouth... And some are even red! Amazing, lol. --- Levels are mostly ugly and drab. It has an anime style to it, but it's nothing special. Dungeon walls, cave walls, dungeon walls with lava lighting, dark dungeon walls, dungeon walls with some grass... Areas will start to feel very samey, and even more so when you go through them again at the end of the game to close out the story. --- Boss cutscenes repeat every time you start the fight. You will soon learn why this is annoying if you don't already. You have to confirm you're skipping and then once the screen gets back to you, the boss is already beaming you in the face with an attack sometimes. (Matters less if you're a gaming god.) --- Some mechanics of the magic aren't explained well. You can cheese through the areas that are supposed to stop you until you use the mechanic correctly, so you'll never actually understand what you were supposed to learn. I personally got past one such roadblock without using the intended mechanic to pass through, so I had no idea about it until much later. --- The game is quite short. For the current asking price of $24.99, there are better games to buy. BUT WHAT ABOUT THE GOOD???? I got you: --- Fun combat mechanics. You get to snipe fools with magic and beat them up with melee attacks to fill your mana bar. You can "absorb" attacks to basically parry it and get more mana without taking damage. It's fun to try and land these. Makes me wish there were more enemies to fight!! --- Satisfying magic types. I think thunder is the best, but they're all pretty cool. The charged modes actually doing something other than "bigger damage" is very nice. I think this could be improved and fleshed out more, but I appreciate what's there. --- Cute protagonist. Cute outfits. This will heal your heart as you get beaten down by the bosses. --- Quite a few bosses. Without these, this game would be a joke, even on Advanced Mode. These guys don't show you any mercy, and will force many gamers to grind for more levels to stand a chance against them. Honestly, these things kicked my face in. I had to grind levels like I isekai'd as the "hero" with some OP skills. And even then, I tasted defeat more than I'd like to admit. (I only played on Advanced Mode, so I don't know how less of a threat they are on the lower difficulty.) --- Level layout is serviceable. Looping shortcuts, a few ambushes, and hidden treasures will be a constant. Basically, what you'd expect from a souls-like. --- Cool boss rush mode. Introduces a new twist on the old bosses, and adds more lore. I'm glad to see this included. All in all, I hope to see a sequel to this game.

didn't even know that this souls game existed until i went on reddit in a desperate attempt to find more that i didn't know. the story is decent, the levels are linear and decently easy to navigate, the bosses are fun and it really tests your timing with dodges. the magic is cool, upgrades are simple, easier then other games to rack up souls, fair checkpoint placements and it's pretty polished ontop of that. it's a bit different then other souls games, while there is melee combat, it's mostly a third person shooter (magic shooting out of staff lol). i would say the playtime is decently fair for the price, although if you aren't in a rush, i'd say wait for a sale if you've played other souls games otherwise you might be disappointed with the playtime to price ratio. i wasn't, but some others might. recommended if you like anime, magic and souls games!
