Like always with chinese room games it is very difficult to review. You don't buy and play games from chiense room for their gameplay, you play them because of their story, atmosphere and dedication. And while i would say it's probably the weakest of their games i played so far it's still good and absolutely worth for the low price and even more in sale. It's just not the same masterpiece quality as dear esther, amnesia or rapture. My two biggest negative points are: β€’ The music, it's not bad. But music was always one of the best things in their games. Here it's not. β€’ It's probably a little to little gameplay. All the 2d platformer elements you expect from a game like this (riddles, timing, jump and run) are as basic as possible. Some of the good things: β€’ As always with chinese room games - the story β€’ the art & design as well as the variety in environment β€’ Awesome voiceacting

β€œTovarish Privalov…IVAN IVANOVICH!” Little Orpheus is a an example of a linear story-heavy platformer done right: juicy and rich visuals, great themed music (although a bit clichΓ©), that conveys the atmosphere and bizarre but captivating plot. We are playing as Ivan Ivanovich Privalov – a Soviet interiornaut (an upside down astronaut) in alternative universe who was given a mission to reach the Earth core in a special machine, called Little Orpheus. The game leads us through his memories (but are they memories?) while he is being interrogated by the General. At first I was a bit unpleasantly surprised by the relatively low ratings on Steam, however looking through screenshots, I decided to give this game a try. And wasn’t disappointed! It took me a little less than 4,5 hours to beat the game, and a total of 9 hours to collect 100% of achievements. This is the only thing that remotely looks like a problem in Little Orpheus. You see, I prefer to get all 100% of achievements in game via the first playthrough, but the developers have decided that the player should play the game at least twice (and if he/she is inattentive, than 2,5 times), before he is able to beat it completely. To me, this game shines when you play it the very first time, but to replay it right after you have beaten it feels kinda repetitive, since you are going through all the same scenes and twists. Overall, it’s a smart parody of Soviet Union, full of irony and humour, which emerges the player in various bright worlds. 7,75/10, Recommend. This game is certainly worthy of much more attention and recognition than it got so far.

Loved it! It's a small vignette of a game, four hours in total, and it has a very cool premise of the story: you have a definitely unreliable narrator spinning a fairy tale during an interrogation. You never learn what actually happened, but you play the fantasy as it unfolds. I've never seen this point of view in games, and here, I think, it's done very well, the story indeed touches on the tropes you would expect this guy to bring up. The graphics are obviously inexpensive but the artistic style is a perfect match for the game. Unfortunately, I have to kick off a couple of points for clunky platforming (at one point, I spent about ten attempts to press a lever in time, not because it was hard to reach but because the guy had to be positioned just right for the lever pushing button to register, and you didn't have time to try several times) and bugs (one of the levels just completely broke for me, automatically killing me right after respawn, but fortunately restarting the game fixed it). But I still enjoyed this little story very much, and this is exactly the kind of game I'd love to see more of!
