Growing up my brother left his play station and a bunch of games for me to play after he went to college. Legend of Mana was among them. The amount of my life I poured into this game as a child, was probably unhealthy but worth it. So as an adult when I saw I could get it on steam and just have it, not having to pay for an old disc or anything, I jumped at the chance. I have not regretted it. It still is so much fun to play, it still inspires fun in every story with meeting and helping characters navigate this world, a world you get to build. You place an artifact anywhere you want on the map, so each time you play a new game you'll have maps in different spots, some maps need water while others don't. So the layout is fun to contemplate. The weapon choices are still fun, you don't have to commit to one type of build switching it up with magic, actions, and different fighting styles. Combat can get tedious if you do the same thing over and over, but you get to craft new gear and weapons, capture and raise monster companions to fight with you, along with other fun engaging systems. Like using instruments you craft to capture spirits to imbue their power into your crafted items. You get to build and play how you want. Growing fruits to feed you monsters and get them stronger as they come with you on adventures, always such a cute and fun mechanic. The NPC companions each have their own motivation and story in the world, you're along for the ride with them. Some stories get deeper than others but you'll be excited whenever you place a new artifact what type of story you're about to stumble into. Certain stories link to multiple chapters before you see their ending, so you'll be running into familiar faces throughout. Overall I'm happy I got this game. I know I might have nostalgia clouding my judgement but this game for me was worth the price. It's a fun JRPG, you can spend hours in it before beating it once, that's how much stuff there is to do. P.S talk to the cactus ;)

Still just as obtusely complex and vastly rewarding as the first times I played it. The new background art is beautiful and I still love the old pixels so it's a nice mix for me. Combats still what you make of it and you need a plan if you don't want to get whupped or cheesed to death. No issues with anything here performance wise either so all in all it's a great show.

As someone who played this game back in 2000, this game is just amazing. I don't even call it a game, I call a magical dream you dreamt once as a kid, and this day, 20 something years later, you still remember every bit of it. However, that dream did happen again, but in a 2021 (2024 for this review) and feels not as authentic as your first dream. This is where we're going with this remaster. The game is good, but this remaster feels meh. The art design for the houses and towns looks amazing! But the characters sprites, not so much. And maybe just me, but I sense some frame drops here and there. Doesn't happen on the PS1, but consoles and PC, it does. The 2 thing I can say about this remaster that does better, is the text box. Finally they fixed it. Either make it 100% black, or let us control the color of the text box. And last but not least, you can customize the music. In my opinion this is Yoko's best work. Since 2000, this game's OST lives rent free in my head for that long. So is this remaster worth it? Well, if you never played this OG version, go for it. It's worth it. But for people like myself, I would stick to the PS1 version. At least I can mod the game however I want. I would give it a thumbs up. Cause it's more of a nostalgia nothing more. I'll just stick with my PS1 copy. So it's not fair for a bad review.

Legend of Mana is an absolutely beautiful game that is adored for its beautiful sprite work, amazing music composition and being an unconventional JRPG at its time (and maybe even now). The combat is in style of 2D beat'em-ups and have a rather loose feel to the controls which makes combat feel aged. I am mentioning combat early as the controls do take some getting used to and can be a make-or-break for most people. The game uses 2 attack buttons - quick and power. Quick attacks allow you to chain attacks one after another and the number of chains depends on the weapon used. Power attacks have higher damage but at the cost of higher recovery time. Quick attack chains will require timing (which varies according to the weapon) and the game will punish you if you try to button-mash your way through by locking your character's animation for a brief period of time. The interesting aspect of Legend of Mana's combat is that mechanically, even though it's an action RPG title, it is much more sophisticated than the average beat'em-up with customizable abilities. You can also equip up to 2 such abilities which can do things like jumping, dashing or guarding. You will choose initially from a small few basic selection but as you clear more battles with them equipped, you start unlocking more powerful ones up to 26. There are also many weapon Special Techniques that get unlocked over time, which are essentially super attacks that you can equip up to 4 at a time. Your choice of weapon, abilities and special techniques will determine your style of combat and are free to change anytime outside battles. In terms of the gameplay, the game features many activities that you can do and it goes very well with the laid-back feel of the game. You can capture monster eggs and raise them as pets to become your combat companions. Grow produce which can be used to feed your pet amongst other things. Forge weapons/armors and improve on them to become more powerful. Craft instruments to lure elements to drop crafting materials. Build golems which was be used as your combat companion. Story-wise, Legend of Mana does not feature an overarching storyline. Instead, it is comprised of a few disjointed story arcs with which the player can choose to take part in. The game is non-linear and is very easy to lock yourself out of certain story arcs. As such, it is advised to look up a guide online because the game was designed to be played multiple time through trial and error on the player's part. Overall, the story was ok. I definitely felt that this aspect was the more underwhelming aspect of the title, which is unfortunate because some of the story arcs are pretty good but was done a disservice due to the narrative structure. The writing is rather inconsistent; there are certain arcs where the dialogue is fantastic and hilarious, then there are ones where it sounds cryptic - like something got lost in translation. Presentation is where the title shines. The artwork and sprites are gorgeous and the remaster also includes a gallery where it showcases some of the concept arts. But it is the music composition that has always kept me remembering the game since it debut on Playstation, 2 decades ago. The remaster features an arranged soundtrack and also the original, which you can choose to switch between in-game. It also has a music player that allows you to sample all the tracks in the game. The original soundtrack was a masterpiece and arranged soundtrack is just as good. A few outstanding tracks are "Hometown Domina", "Destinies Intertwined" and "Bejeweled City in Ruins" (though most of the tracks are outstanding imo). The remaster also added a few QoL like auto-saving, turning encounters off and the gallery additions mentioned previously. Performance-wise, the game runs very well. I did get one crash throughout my 40+ hours with it with no progress lost thanks to auto-save - but that could've been due to me messing around with Steam settings rather than the game. I thoroughly enjoyed my time with Legend of Mana and would strongly recommend it, however, only when it's on discount because the original asking price is way too high for such an old game with little put into the remaster.

A childhood favourite. This and Ogre Battle 64 are two games that nothing else has ever come close to for me. Truly a Gem, even if it is not for everyone.
