What if there was a platformer where you can only move and jump -- but jumping gives enough fall damage to kill you? And what if it was structured around knowledge-based progression, like Outer Wilds and Fez? Leap Year feels like a medicine pill: something made in vitro to scratch an extremely specific itch and nothing more. The playtime is the shortest needed to achieve its intended function: 1 to 2 hours. The art is scribbly, evoking the idea that it is as incomplete as they could get away with. Everything else was either stripped bare or discarded (as if they wanted to minimize side effects) leaving the game with generic landscapes, an incoherent theme, and without any semblance of a narrative. The only thing stopping this game from being soulless and sterile is its quiet sense of humor. It is funny: god dammit, you can (and will) die (everytime) by simply jumping -- that is, by doing the most basic thing anyone can do in a platformer! Imagine a version of Doom where missing a single bullet killed you immediately, or a version of Zelda where slashing the air opened the Game Over screen -- that's the kind of trolling-based game design we're talking about here. Not only that, but the collectibles in the game are... days in February?! Why!? "Well, why not?", I can hear the designer answering, coming into view from an unseen corner of the room. This deadpan humor quietly extends itself over the rest of the level design, and it's a triumph of the game designer that this is wholly sufficient to make the game be less of a medicine pill and more of a cool university experiment where they give you 50 bucks to see how you react when you shock yourself in the nuts. It's a good game, but I wouldn't like to play it for much longer than I did.

What a great little game! Made me feel like I was playing an olde indie game from the days of VVVVVV, Star Guard and Knytt. At its core is a simple and amusing mechanic but it's really cleverly explored with plenty of surprises. I'd say more but, come on, it's only four quid and a couple of hours long so give it a whirl if you fancy a break from the usual.

Great little game! It doesn't overstay its welcome and it is knowledge-gated in the best ways, similar to something like Outer Wilds. Go in blind!

Very well designed game with a ridiculously fragile protagonist. Not very long, but doesn't waste your time either. I beat the entirety of the game in under 2 hours, and still consider it a bargain at full price. Fundamentally it's a puzzle platformer, but feels more like a metroidvania despite a complete lack of gear gating and combat. This creates what is the game's greatest strength, where it focuses on its minimal mechanics to maximize the fun and puzzles available in its design space. By the end, you're in awe at the planning that went into making this short and sweet masterpiece.

Very novel concept. This is a game far more for puzzle lovers than for metroidvania lovers, but even still the world map is tightly designed. Worth experiencing for yourself.
