Leap Year is a wonderful little platformer that subverts genre norms around how jumping works to great effect. As with many of the best puzzle games, the mechanics are tightly focused, not overused, and the game ends before it's worn out its welcome. Definitely worth the price!

Another exemplar of Metroidbrainias on my list. It definitely has the vibes, but Leap Year feels too small to truly qualify as one, in my opinion. When you learn a new mechanic, you apply it mostly in new areas. Previously visited places tend to have just one or two opportunities to use it. The complexity is just right—I was able to get all the days by myself, except for the last one, which really had me scratching my head.

This is a 2d puzzle platformer that takes on a simple concept: the player has fall damage. The player can jump, but the jump is just high enough to take fall damage, killing the player instantly. The player must constantly find ways of jumping by landing on higher elevation or helpless civilians, making you think twice before you jump. The level design perfectly complements this gimmick to make exploration and discovery so enjoyable. It may be a cheap and short game, but this is a hidden gem that a platformer fan must go and play.

What if there was a platformer where you can only move and jump -- but jumping gives enough fall damage to kill you? And what if it was structured around knowledge-based progression, like Outer Wilds and Fez? Leap Year feels like a medicine pill: something made in vitro to scratch an extremely specific itch and nothing more. The playtime is the shortest needed to achieve its intended function: 1 to 2 hours. The art is scribbly, evoking the idea that it is as incomplete as they could get away with. Everything else was either stripped bare or discarded (as if they wanted to minimize side effects) leaving the game with generic landscapes, an incoherent theme, and without any semblance of a narrative. The only thing stopping this game from being soulless and sterile is its quiet sense of humor. It is funny: god dammit, you can (and will) die (everytime) by simply jumping -- that is, by doing the most basic thing anyone can do in a platformer! Imagine a version of Doom where missing a single bullet killed you immediately, or a version of Zelda where slashing the air opened the Game Over screen -- that's the kind of trolling-based game design we're talking about here. Not only that, but the collectibles in the game are... days in February?! Why!? "Well, why not?", I can hear the designer answering, coming into view from an unseen corner of the room. This deadpan humor quietly extends itself over the rest of the level design, and it's a triumph of the game designer that this is wholly sufficient to make the game be less of a medicine pill and more of a cool university experiment where they give you 50 bucks to see how you react when you shock yourself in the nuts. It's a good game, but I wouldn't like to play it for much longer than I did.

Very novel concept. This is a game far more for puzzle lovers than for metroidvania lovers, but even still the world map is tightly designed. Worth experiencing for yourself.
