Solid enough (but nothing memorable) city builder with some raiding elements involved (no direct combat-resolved via screen decisions). If you like city builders that don't require a lot of micromanagement this will do.

For a beginner colony sim is acceptable when its on sale. It's a very pretty game but relatively easy, unfortunately after 10 hours you can do pretty much anything and finish all of the achievements for the fun of it. It sort of tries to emulate the Banished blueprint but fails to put the difficulty aspect and the feeling that you are one bad decision away from total annihilation, even in the hardest settings.

Good colony sim, but after 10-20 hours max there is not much point.

Land of the Vikings has all the makings of a refreshingly fun twist on the survival/city-sim genre. It is firmly within the mould of Banished -esque titles, although is more forgiving on the player than its progenitor. Positives [*]The game has a very immersive feel, with excellent Norse-style architecture and character models. [*]Raiding is what promises to set this game apart from the competition, although it does require some refinement. [*]Good map variety, which enables a range of challenge and design opportunities for the player. [*]Threats such as enemy raids and natural disasters keep you on your toes. Areas for development [*]Certain areas of micro-management within the game become tedious rather fast. For example, having to manually re-assign ships to a dock after they have been repaired. Similarly, not all jobs are able to benefit from the auto-replacement feature when sims die. [*]Storage feels a bit imbalanced at the moment. Storage buildings take up a disproportionate amount of space by the time the player reaches mid-game. Warehouses and marketplaces should be able to hold more goods, or there should be an unlockable, superior storage building. [*]Some of the requirements to launch a raid have a very limiting impact on what should be a core component of the game. The amount of beer required to launch a raid is prohibitive. [*]Raid management would benefit from some refinement. It is tedious having to manually click each Drakkar from the drop-down menu, when a simple +/- system would suffice. The number of warriors each ship is able to carry should also be increased. Currently, a 60-man raid requires two fully-loaded war docks; the largest settlements require well over 100 warriors to successfully raid. This uses up a massive amount of the available coastline and does not look great aesthetically. [*]The game would benefit from a greater variety of events. The same handful of events appear over and over again, and have little to no impact on gameplay. Overall, this is a fun little game with bags of potential. There is enough content here to keep you entertained for 15-25 hours. However, Land of the Vikings will require further refinement and depth before it could be considered a great game within the survival/city-sim genre.

Land of the Vikings Review: I've had this game for a few years. Pros: 1. Immersive Viking Setting: Land of the Vikings excels in its immersive portrayal of the Viking world. From the rugged landscapes to the authentic Norse mythology-inspired lore, the game transports players to a rich and engaging setting filled with adventure and exploration. 2. Deep Role-Playing Elements: The game offers deep role-playing elements that allow players to create and customize their own Viking characters. From choosing their appearance and skills to making impactful decisions that shape the story, players have a high level of agency in shaping their Viking saga. 3. Epic Quests and Adventures: Land of the Vikings features a variety of epic quests and adventures for players to embark on. Whether it's raiding enemy settlements, exploring mysterious ruins, or engaging in epic battles against mythical creatures, the game offers a diverse range of exciting challenges to conquer. 4. Dynamic World: The game's world feels dynamic and alive, with various factions vying for power and influence. Players can interact with these factions, form alliances or rivalries, and influence the course of events through their actions, adding depth and re-playability to the experience. 5. Visually Stunning: Land of the Vikings boasts stunning visuals that bring the Viking world to life in vivid detail. From lush forests to snowy mountains, the game's environments are beautifully rendered, immersing players in the rugged beauty of the Norse landscape. Cons: 1. Technical Issues: Despite its visual prowess, Land of the Vikings suffers from technical issues such as bugs, glitches, and performance issues. These issues can detract from the overall experience and lead to frustration for players, especially during intense combat or exploration sequences. 2. Steep Learning Curve: The game has a steep learning curve, especially for players new to the role-playing genre. The sheer depth and complexity of the game's mechanics and systems can be overwhelming at times, requiring patience and persistence to fully grasp and master. 3. Limited Character Customization: While the game offers some degree of character customization, it is relatively limited compared to other role-playing games. Players may find themselves wishing for more options to personalize their Viking characters and make them truly unique. 4. Lack of Polish: Despite its strong core gameplay and compelling setting, Land of the Vikings lacks the polish and refinement of other AAA titles. From awkward animations to clunky UI design, the game feels rough around the edges in certain areas, detracting from the overall immersion and enjoyment. Rating: 7/10 Explanation: Land of the Vikings is a standout title that excels in its immersive setting, deep role-playing elements, and epic quests and adventures. Its visually stunning presentation and dynamic world further elevate the experience, making it a must-play for fans of the Viking genre and role-playing games in general. However, the game is not without its flaws. Technical issues, a steep learning curve, and limited character customization may detract from the overall experience for some players. Despite these shortcomings, Land of the Vikings remains a highly enjoyable and engaging experience that earns it a solid rating of 7 out of 10. Thank you for taking the time to read my review.
