What if Deadly Premonition had a decent control system and didn't run like garbage on PC? Lake Haven: Chrysalis is the demo for that game: it's a survival horror short that places greater emphasis on mood, exploration, and puzzling than combat and maintains a paid membership to the Silent Hill and Twin Peaks fanclubs. I suspect the number of overt displays of worship to these franchises and to other genre staples might be overpowering for some, but I actually found it a joy to discover all the references and nods. It doesn't hurt that it plays really well; these are the best and least irritating tank controls I've ever come across, the controller layout will make genre fans feel right at home, and the puzzle-solving and item-hunting are just taxing enough that you have to stop and ponder but never for too long. The play area is quite confined, limited to just a farmhouse and the yard outside, which limits obnoxious backtracking and filler material while preventing you from escaping the oppressive atmosphere and allowing the dev to make sure each area gets the right amount of attention. The atmosphere is thick - there's only one instance of combat and it comes quite late, leaving the tension to build as you try to work out what exactly has happened here through environmental storytelling and the classic found diary entries that victims and perpetrators love to scatter around their homes for enterprising detectives to find. It’s not a long story but you can still save your game once you get about halfway by having a nice black coffee which was a nice touch. The further you go, the stranger the game gets too. It begins as a simple missing person case turned murder mystery, but by the end you're in full-on Twin Peaks Black Lodge territory as you roam through hidden caverns and talk to holograms and whispering mystery women while being chased by angry red mist. The script spirals into madness and becomes ever more impressionistic in parallel, and there are some lovely Lynchian flourishes on show. The visuals are absolutely lovely too - this is how you remember PSX/2 games looking rather than how they actually were. The characters look brilliant (their faces especially), the lighting is really nice, and there are some really cool effects like the falling snow or reflective tiles that would've wowed me in the Playstation days and still impress now. For those that like to go hunting needles in haystacks, there's also a very large hidden Silent Hill 2 and PT area to be discovered that I won't spoil but really bought the nostalgia home to me. Based on what I saw I'd love Encrypt Games to make a full-on PT demake or tribute game but that would prevent them from working on the full version of Lake Haven, which I wish they would hurry up with because I'd be a day 1 purchaser on the strength of this little gem of a game. It's honestly brilliant, it's made by people who have a clear love the genre, and it's incredibly cheap for the quality on show here. If you like surreal horror then please give this a try. This game seems like it will be one of the best revil/sh inspired games out there. It looks quite promising! Good tank controls, good camera placement, good ambiance, good thrill, good puzzles. Great job!

Its described as a "prologue" but its a paid demo honestly, though its a good one. Zero combat and all puzzle solving, although alot of the puzzles are just finding an item and using it somewhere else. Ther is however the ability to combine inspect and combine items which is neat. Game has alot of Twin Peaks vibes, and theres also a ton of very blatant homages to other horror games, they kinda made me chuckle how in your face they were. Despite that the game is fun and will keep you entertained for around 2 hours.

A wonderful introduction to the world of Lake Haven, a love letter to Silent Hill and Twin Peaks, with a lot of its own charm and a fantastic flow to its puzzles and mechanics. It's incredibly eerie, with very subtle sound design that puts you on edge as you try and piece together the story in an enchantingly creepy environment. Once I'd gotten settled in with the premise, and felt comfortable, it did a fantastic job of subverting expectations and pulling me right out of my seat. Also, a little guy! Neat!
