The base game is very well ballenced and has a very good progression to it (~70 hours), but DO NOT PLAY THE POST GAME or plus disk content. I treid and honestly there is a vertical cliff of a difficulty spike that just made it so unfun that I could not beat bosses even when massivly overleveled despite finding the base game bossed not that hard.

Pretty good party building game. You keep getting new characters, each of which is in its own class, and with 12 party slots, unlimited free respecs, and well made menus, it's more fun to constantly experiment than in any other RPG I've played. That alone would be enough for the game to be decent, but we also have an ATB-like combat system, with lots of ways to manipulate timings, which makes executing the combat interesting in its own right. (It's worth pointing out that I did not enjoy ATB in other games I've tried that had it. It does not kill the pacing here and it doesn't make you menu in real time.) The challenge is high, though a lot of it is because of poor signaling. Some bosses will throw a berserk tantrum because you did something they didn't like, and you have to play detective to figure out what's their problem (or look it up on the wiki, the feds can't stop you). On top of that, skill descriptions don't show damage numbers, and the mitigation-heavy damage formulas will throw off your testing, which can be annoying. The above might sound like high praise, but we got flaws too. The exploration amounts to walking around on a grid with repetitive random encounters, which at least gives you an opportunity to test combat, but is still boring. The presentation is not great, most of the enemies are downright ugly (there's a reason the steam previews don't show any combat sprites), and the best parts of the experience are looking at a spreadsheet with a png of a touhou next to it. There's also some amount of grinding - especially if you want to unlock all the characters, which you probably do - which is unfortunate, but I can't say it's much worse than the typical amount of time you'll spend doing completionist filler in similar games.

Wiki feels kinda necessary because some of the tooltips aren't as descriptive as they could be Animations are fun, level exploration feels nice and the little puzzles are fun, bosses are interesting challenges Every item has an rpg-related joke which is very fun, even though I only get some of them Uses its large-party system very well, boss fights with them are interesting as your party gets picked off from lethal attacks Good game

Labyrinth of Touhou is incredibly clever with some rough edges. Just to get it out of the way for people unaware, Touhou is a series of shoot-em-ups that is very friendly towards people using its IP. This has resulted in a bunch of fangames using the cast of characters (and surprisingly, many of them are good). It's not a plot heavy series so you don't need to know any lore. This is one of the most interesting combat systems in any JRPG I've played, focused on the frontline/backline mechanics. You have a party of 12 characters with 4 in the frontline and 8 in the backline. When backline characters would get their turn, they instead heal some HP and MP. Any frontline character can use their turn to swap the locations of any two characters. This gives you a ton of choices in combat, debating whether you want to keep your unit in and heal them, or swap them out and let them passively recover. Or figuring out how to rotate different characters in to apply their unique buffs, debuffs, or status effects on the enemy and then put them back on the bench after their purpose is done. Or even swapping in a less important unit as fodder for a big boss hit, knowing that they'll die but you can hopefully clear the fight with your remaining characters (you have 12 after all). Each character in the cast of 50+ has their own unique abilities, passives you can level, and interactions with other characters so there's a ridiculous amount of options for team building and executing fights. Bosses themselves have mechanics that will feel unfair but expect you to think and use all the tools you're given. Fortunately, the game puts teleport points close to most bosses so runbacks aren't long (or if you don't need to tweak your party at all, there's an immediate retry option). These get tricky and if you're not okay wiping to a boss because they did a new move when they hit 25% HP you weren't ready for, that could be a rough spot. The rough edges are a lack of transparency and the mediocre exploration. Exploration is done over a bland grid with some mostly basic navigation puzzles. There's not much QoL in terms of quest logs, so you might want to take notes on where specific NPCs were and what they wanted. There's random battles as you move about, which makes some of the navigation puzzles more annoying than they are interesting (which all essentially are figuring out which combination of switches lets you through to the next area). The lack of transparency hits in the tooltip descriptions. Abilities will say they increase a stat, but by how much? What changes if you level up the ability? When the boss did an attack that wiped my party, was that hitting against my physical defense or my magical defense? When my debuff didn't land, was the boss flat out immune or was I unlucky? Given bosses are a bit puzzle-like with figuring out their movesets, trying to figure out this information on top of it is frustrating. Two bits of good news, one is that there's a nice wiki covering Labyrinth of Touhou that lists the important info. None of it is strictly needed, but if you're the type of player this game appeals to you probably also will appreciate the wiki: https://en.touhouwiki.net/wiki/Labyrinth_of_Touhou_2 The other is that the announced sequel, Labyrinth of Touhou Tri, has fixed these issues with clear tooltips and much greater enemy transparency. Either way, highly recommend this to people who love turn-based combat and want to face some challenges that really make them think, both in terms of party planning and fight execution.

Despite its decently high price point, this game is well worth the money if you're looking for a serious time sink for an RPG. As of this review, I've made it past the main game, main postgame, the "plus disk" main content, and just started the "plus disk" postgame content. I know there's still a ton of game left to play, but I wanted to leave a review now that the next installment is launching soon. The pros: Incredibly in-depth combat system where all units have potential to be good, even if some units are certainly more useful than others in more situations. The 12-party, 4-active and 8-reserve system with strategic switching is unique and very flexible once you get used to it. Character writing is very fun and the plot, while simple, had a few clever beats to them. The boss battles are the main gameplay attraction, and even in "Hard" mode, never quite feel unfair. The cons: For being a Touhou game, the music, while good, has a few flaws. For one, they're not really Touhou related, just music used from a general-purpose music licensing source. But the much bigger flaw is that the music does not properly loop. It just fades out and then starts from the beginning. I really hope the next game properly loops its music. Some move effects and other gameplay aspects are not clear in-game and are sometimes intentionally hidden from the player. You won't necessarily truly know the nitty gritty of your character's capabilities unless you look at the wiki or do a lot of trial and error. Thankfully, the wiki is a very useful source and guide, so this isn't a major problem in itself. But despite those two problems, the game overall is fantastic. If you're a fan of Etrian Odyssey-style gameplay, or in general want to play with a very configurable combat system, get this game.
