L.A. Noire is one of the few games out there that forces the player not to strategize, but to analyze. You’re studying the human face, gathering evidence and coming to conclusions based on that evidence. I just love the whole 1940s vibe so much the cars, style, music. Say what you will about the quality of the game, but to this day it is still one of the most distinct ones out there. Rockstar should give L.A. Noire another shot it would do really well.

Great game. I'm surprised there aren't any newer games with a similar concept.

I beat the main story a long time ago, but finally got around to getting all achievements. This is a detective story where you need to search for clues, interrogate suspects, victims, and witnesses, and decide if what telling you is the truth, doubtful, or a lie. If you choose that it is a lie, you need to use the clues that you found to confront them with the truth. You do this for 21 cases spread across a variety of police investigations. You do traffic, homocide, arsen and more types of cases. There is an overarching storyline that does follow these cases, though not always directly connected, but the game offers a compelling story. The era is set in the late 40s post WWII. You are Cole Phelps, a veteran who has come home and joined the LAPD. The game is an open world, very similar to GTA with a beautifully rendered Los Angeles of that era. There are a variety of cars for you to drive as well as trucks. You can follow the main storyline or drive around searching for film reels, badges, street crimes, and collecting every single car available in the game. One of the things that stands out in this game is the characters faces. The technology used for this game is unique where actual actor's faces were used for great facial animation. This facial animation technology was used to help you decide if someone is lying, telling the truth, or just not wanting to answer. You can see this in their expression, the way their eyes look away when they tell a lie, or the face not matching the words that they are saying. It's actually a pretty cool technology. It doesn't look great by today's standards of graphics, but the facial expressions seem more advanced than what you see typically even today since they put so much effort in showing how characters react to questions. The game is not difficult at all, the difficulty is trying to find all of the clues and guessing correctly on 1. Truth 2. Doubt 3. Lie when a character responds to your questions. Also, due to the lifelike facial expressions, as per usual for Rockstar, the voices are great too. The car radios offer some great 1940s commercials, music, and commentary, and just overall the sounds of the entire game is great even the sounds of the streets. It took me some time to finish all of the achievements as the collection of items can be quite difficult on such a large map, but it was fun as the game offers a great atmosphere to explore and drive around in. If you haven't played this game yet, I would definitely pick it up as it's a classic in the list of games that Rockstar has created. Highly recommended.

L.A. Noire is truly a game ahead of it's time, but it's also a game very much from 2011. It's motion capture of face expressions makes games that are coming out today look like the ones that came out more than a decade ago. And even though it has a decent story, it's gameplay gets repetitive very soon and the world, as amazing as it is, being almost a 1x1 replica of 1940s Los Angeles, it's filled with very little to do. Overall L.A. Noire is still a very decent and it's sad that Rockstar might never make another one again.
