I originally bought Kingdoms and Castles on Early Access release many years ago. I had quite a bit of fun with the beta version I played, but it fell to the wayside in my library as I kept amassing more titles. Upon finding out the devs were working on another city builder in Nova Roma, it reminded me that I really should check out the finished version of K&C, to see how it ended up, as I enjoyed the early template. It's a great title, with two vastly different ways to play, I feel. Well, three different ways - but I've only really played two. So the first way is casual mode in peaceful. There are no barbarians, no wolves, no dragons, just you trying to build up your village to the biggest capacity you can. A very serine mode where the hours can just pass you by. Then you have difficulty settings which will turn enemies on, as your population increases, you'll start being attacked by groups of barbarians, or a dragon (or 3), every few minutes. The waves will keep increasing in size as you beat them, and the barbarians even start to bring giant ogres with them to knock down your defenses. I enjoy this mode bit I find it takes away from building aesthetic castles, I find myself just covering my kingdom with giant 2x2 sky towers of doom. If I try to wall anything off, I find myself just wasting resources repairing it every few minutes. I find this goes against why I enjoyed the game in the first place, I like building fancy kingdoms! There is a third way to play, with other rulers building kingdoms. You can have up to 3 other kingdoms in your world, dependant on map size, but I didn't really delve in to this too much, as I found the battling aspect of K&C to be somewhat lacking. I find it excels at being a chill city builder where you can kick back and relax. The game has a rather limited building selection in reality, but don't let that detract from the fun to be had with this title. I was also pleasantly surprised to see it still sits at a low price of Β£12. Highly recommended title, and I look forward to seeing what the next game brings!

Hello Friends, Today i will review the game Kingdoms and Casltes. This is a city builder that is simple enough for young children to enjoy, but can be difficult depending on the settings you choose. For example, i choose a random map seed number, which turned out to be a sizeable island and put random on how many other kingdoms i would have to compete against. I found out later in the game i had to deal with 2 other kingdoms in the world. One of these was very warlike, and the other one was quite peaceful. Eventually, i dealt with the warlike one and exilxed him from our countries, and took over the peaceful one as the king retired and since we were good friends, gave his kingdom to me. This is how the game works. You also must deal with your needs of the peasants that live in your kingdom. If they get too depressed, they will leave your kingdom, making less people working in your kingdom and messing up your economy. Kepp them happy, and they will work harder on your jobs and even give extra goods working on them. So this is a city builder that is simple enough to master, but can be difficult to beat. It is also set exclusively in the Middle Ages, so do not expect many future tech in it like other city builders or other games. Anyways, here is my Pro and Cons list: PROS: - A city builder game to keep hardcore people entertained depending on how hard you set the game, but simple enough young children can enjoy it. - Ability to conquer enemy kingdoms and take over them. - You can build a very sizeable kingdom, or have a small one. It all depends on the map seed. By using the map seed, players can change the map size. - Open ended game where you can play as long as you want. - It works on Windows 11 Operating System. CONS: - One thing i found was to get enough fish for my people. If your not careful, you can overfish and end up not getting any fish in the end. I did post a suggestion about the lack of fish someplaces. The developer did respond to me on the forum. You can see my post here: https://steamcommunity.com/app/569480/discussions/0/4298194722190505456/ - The store page says it will work with my controller, but it never did. I ended up using Keyboard and Mouse. Not sure if it is compatible with my Switch Zen controller or not, but i could never get it to work correctly with my controller. The Keyboard and Mouse works flawlessly though, and i had no trouble using it. Recommended game. Even if the game appears simple in all aspects, it can be challenging depending on the players choices. The map size can also make it harder, and how many opponent kingdoms the player has to defeat. A good entry level game into the city builder type of games.

A good game with a nice, comfortable premise, but not really deep in the slightest. I have about 7-8 hours in, and I feel I've done everything I want or need to do. I haven't picked it up in months and feel no real "itch." Even still, the mechanics are satisfying and tactile, and, though shallow, the character systems and war mechanics are appreciated to add some extra depth. For $15, I would't say it's worth it, but on a sale of under $10, it's a fun time.
