I love this game. King Arthur's Gold is a masterclass of emergent mechanics and one of the few games which brings that to PvP. The defenses you build will never totally prevent an enemy from making progress, but they can slow them down long enough for you to deal with them. It's a game of plays and counter-plays and changing your tactics on the fly to meet the situation. There's always some strange item or mechanic you can pull out to keep the fight interesting. This might not be for everyone, but if you enjoy thinking sideways and rat tactics this is your game. The main issue with the game is the lack of active servers and the community on them. As the game has an extremely high skill ceiling, most people still playing will absolutely clown on new people to the extent the game isn't fun. You will likely need to provide your own friends and host your own server (which only requires editing a config file and port forwarding). Most of my time in the game has been with low population private games with friends. If you're going to do that, manually balancing the teams in terms of both players and skill is going to be essential as with few people the game requires you to know what you're doing and adapt quickly to situations as they come up. There are a ton of game modes built in and a lot of modded servers. If you're looking to host a modded server, the modding community is unfortunately very hostile, but as mods are stored locally you can copy them as you see fit. Be warned, a lot of modders attempt to put traps in their mods to make them not work right unless they're the ones hosting them. The game itself is very modding-friendly. Even the base game is built on scripts. The negatives I present here are mostly to try and help people find the fun. It's a lot easier to describe the problems with the game than to give a detailed account of how the game works and what it does well, as there's just so much going on here. Especially for a free game you can try yourself. I paid for this game before it went free to play and haven't regretted it. There's nothing else like it out there.

First game I ever bought on this platform, good times. Dev have open-sourced it years back, development's been slowly going since then. Wish they'd bring Classic to Steam too with it's Zombie Fortress mode.

Really hard and very fun. Some of the mods on the game are also really fun. A very steep learning curve with an deeply entrenched tryhard community, but fun nonetheless.
