Grade: B “Good/Better Than Average” Summary: If you want to play a dark fantasy tactical turn-based RPG, this is a great game. Artistically, it’s brilliant, but it can be overbearingly gloomy, and while there is much thematically Arthurian, it squanders its namesake legendarium in terms of story. It may go on a bit long, but it’s a fun game to play with many characters to choose from. + Strengths + -It feels pretty Arthurian. Duels, chivalric themes, tension between Old Gods and Christianity, and unexpected but well done rulership choices that affect character relationships and some mechanics. -Art designs and aesthetic were phenomenal, from illuminated manuscript/medieval tapestry style art to hazy otherworldliness to gorgeously detailed environments. It feels very mythical and Arthurian, but further twisted into this Avalonian dream (or rather, nightmare). -Sound design was robust and satisfying and eerie. -Gameplay: Fun grid-based tactical dark fantasy combat! - Weaknesses - -Level Design: While artistically and thematically well-crafted, levels often repeated or looked the same, with uninspiring mazes or extremely drab and gloomy locales without much to do or explore besides fight baddies. -Music: The music was awesome! ...but there were only 5 or so songs. They wore thin fast. -Length: The game went on several hours longer than it probably should’ve. -Story: Acceptable. Coherent but not meaningful. It all feels like a dream, and there’s too little impact to care, and the Mordred/Arthur flip isn’t interesting on its own nor justified in the story. Relationship building is purely mechanical. It’s a waste of the rich material from Arthurian legends. = Competencies = -Solid animations, interface, and information delivery. -Voice actors ranged wildly. Some minor characters were much better than major characters. Most did a decent job. Mechanics: The class types were varied and very fun and each brought their own strengths and weaknesses that allowed you to play like you want. However, there were too few of them, too many characters, and too few you could bring with you. You’ll never get to spend much time with as many as you want, even if you replayed multiple times, which would probably be interesting at most twice.

Good Xcom style game set in the mythos of Camelot and King Arthur with a decent anti hero plot line. Some of the writing is straight garbage and a more experienced writer could have gotten more mileage out of the story. However, the combat was solid, the enemies were good and the characters (for the most part) all had unique and interesting kits. Didn't bother with the additional endgame content as I felt content with defeating the final boss. Good way to spend 70 odd hours overall.

One of the best tactical strategy games that I've played, King Arthur Knight's Tale gives me the same feeling as my all time favourite series, King's Bounty (the old one). The treasure that you find on the map and the equipment in the stores are random and that gives the game great replayability. There are 30ish heroes to recruit, some names are from the legend (like Lancelot and Guinevere) and from them you must choose 12 to put at the round table. The team with which you go on missions has four heroes and often you are helped by a fifth only for that particular map. You can employ many different strategies to kill the enemies, you have might and magic, even illusions, and, furthermore, your strategy must change when more powerful enemies appear on the map. There are a lot of combos between the heroes and it's very gratifying when you win a battle or when, after a mission, you get back to Camelot and improve your heroes. Another layer of strategy is in what order you build Camelot facilities. There are many games like this on the market, but KAKN has something special. Maybe because I love the lore or maybe cause of the level design and the synergies between the heroes, I don't know, but since XCOM2 I haven't found a more engaging and better tactical game. Pros: - the lore, everything about it is great: the heroes, the stories of the missions and the people within them - the strategy: you must think how to beat almost every fight and be adaptive, otherwise you will have a lot of heroes injured and not available - level design: the missions are different usually you don't get bored doing the same thing numerous times - the narrative of the game and the little stories here are there are a delight for someone who loves the legend and mythology - the heroes and their skills are balanced and there is great pleasure in discovering their synergies. Cons: - not a fan of the navigation on the mission maps. Often you don't know where to go, it seems to be a road on the map, but it's not, it's a wall - stuttering in some object heavy missions.

Pretty fun but it kinda started to drag on towards the end. By act 4 I had recruited all of the morality-based knights I could get and had my roster locked in, and was pretty much bringing the same four knights on every mission as they didn't tend to get injured often, maybe rarely having to swap one out to recover. Missions really started to bleed together at that point, and save for a few more interesting side missions featuring the knights I wasn't able to recruit as enemies, most of the missions just felt very repetitive and samey, and only added extra grind to prepare for the final boss. There's a whole endgame featuring post-story content but I'm honestly pretty content to be done with the game rather than try it out. There's some odd design choices in this game. There are many knights to recruit, but you can only have 12 active knights at a time, with an extra 4 in reserves. Any excess knights you just have to dismiss, never able to recruit them again. Since my knights weren't ever dying, I ended up having to dismiss around five or six knights just to make room for the new knights you can recruit from morality unlocks, which just felt really weird. Also, you can only ever bring 4 knights on a mission, there's no ability to increase that amount or do anything else with them. So even with 4 knights training and 4 knights deploying and perhaps one or two knights sent on a random event, I would still tend to have extra knights just sitting around doing nothing, why can't I bring more with? Performance was also quite an issue, I'm not sure why this game seems to have such high requirements, feels rather un-optimized to me. I experienced numerous crashes, though at least no major bugs. Overall I think I would recommend it despite these issues, as it was quite fun for the first two acts. It just really started to slow down in the third act and I was getting a little bored in the final act. Once I had my team and general strategy locked in I tended to steamroll most fights, there are some pretty absurd knights with high damage outputs. If you're a fan of these tactical strategy games like XCOM or Fire Emblem, this is for you.

Loved the Anti Hero story line. It is sort of Xcom style but the only strategy is position and timing. Some units have stealth characteristics but no stealth mechanics for the environment. The game itself is fun but repetitive but that makes it relaxing to play. I would love to see a tv series on this game. 8/10
