In terms of graphics and presentation, Dwarf Fortress could learn a thing or two from KeeperRL. One of the most important differences, is that creatures have simple but yet very effective animations, that succesfuly convey their current action just by visual feedback alone. In dwarf fortress, creatures' sprites are always inanimate and you can't, in a glance, tell the difference between a dwarf digging a hole, to a dancing one, or one that is using a cooking station. In KeeperRL every action has a very simple wobble animation, nothing fancy, but it adds so much and makes the creatures look alive. Your minions will even start dancing in groups when they're chilling in their tavern! Also their movement from tile to tile is smoothed out and looks natural, in comparison to DF where the srpites just teleport around. Another major improvement over Dwarf Fortress is the combat, units have actual mass and they don't stack on top of each other (except mounts, yes KeeperRL has mounts!). You can form combat lines and hold choke points, denying the enemy advancing, or keep your Keeper safe behind a wall of meat, your loyal and very expendable minions. That alone makes the combat a hundred times better than in DF, where you can't tell what the hell is going on unless you open a wall of text and even then you have to click through the numerous sprites that are stacked in a single tile. KeeperRL has simple combat animations, so you can tell just by looking at the sprites how the combat is going and which units are engaged. The third major difference is that KeeperRL has a lightning system and fog of war. There's a day and night cycle, you can add torches and candelabras to light up the dark corners of your dungeon. When you dig down, it actually feels like you're poking your head in the black depths below (it's really dark down there!), and you can bring light to that abyss, it's such an important core feeling that Dwarf Fortress unfortunately is lacking at the moment, every level has the same, brightly lit environment, everything is visible all the time. Again KeeperRl's lightning system is nothing fancy, it's simple but it is effective and adds so much texture to the 2D sprites that would otherwise look boring and repeating, like in DF. Enough of what I wish DF would be though, KeeperRL's game loop is very fun and engaging, building your evil forces up, exploring the surroundings, killing, pillaging, capturing, torturing, for a dungeon keeper game it is extremely fun and hits the right spot. There are a few exceptions of tedious and mindboggling micromanaging though, more specifically, minion personal quarters and item managing systems (especially the forge), being very poorly designed and require way too many clicks and time to complete. This constant micromanage was taking me out of the otherwise fun loop, way to often and I wish the dev would add a simpler way to quickly build rooms, like a blueprint system, and add a Rimworld style job order to manage our ever growing pile of loot, (always keep X amount of admantium swords, smelt the rest for example, etc). But other than those issues, the game offers a very good Dungeon Keeper experience, with lots of playstyle options to choose from, from a classic evil mage, to a necromancer focused on undead minions, or an evil knight that can take the whole world by themselves, you can even play as the "good" guys (knights, dwarfs), and of course you can play the game in a pure roguelite fashion, going in as an adventurer. Combat is fun, there are many enemies to discover and conquer and If you manage to be victorious your dungeon and your keeper can even be encountered in other players' future runs, that's a very cool feature indeed. Mods are also a thing, which is always a huge plus in my book, KeeperRL is my new favourite Dungeon Keeper for sure!

I've played probably more than 73 hours and most of that being before 1.0 but now that 1.0 is out I think it's time to finally write a review. I do highly recommend KeeperRL. There are a lot more colony sims on the market now then when this game was first released and Dwarf Fortress what I consider the competitor for your time - also has been released since KeeperRL entered early access. Having put a significant amount of hours into Rimworld, Dwarf Fortress, Craft the World, Grim Realms, Oddworld and virtually every other colony sim or dungeon keeper game, I can definitely say since 1.0 KeeperRL is my favorite. It's the cleanest and most casual rendition of the DF style game, which translates into playable execution and while having that casual feel it still maintains a significant degree of depth with its systems and the variety of encounters even in vanilla (there are mods!) - so if you're a fan of colony building games of any kind or even roguelikes like Roguefable, HSL etc. then absolutely give this game a try and if you get frustrated at the start I guarantee once you get past the 2-3 hour mark you'll be hooked. Thanks to the Developer for their continued hard work over the years, you've really created a gem of a game here and experience. I selfishly hope to see more systems, more encounters, more monsters and more keepers added in the future but if you close the book here and leave it to the modders then I will still say this is a complete game.

This is a good game. However, to get to the good parts you'll have to struggle through mediocre UI, pretty bad combat and lack of decent tutorial and ingame encyclopedia. I'm perfectly fine with consulting wiki in Dwarf Fortress to find info about some obscure/difficult tech, but in this game some of the very basic things are very unclear. Overall I'm considering this a promising early access, albeit a tad too pricey, despite the game being technically fully released.

Do you like the idea behind Dwarf Fortress, its roguelike nature and the building of a fortress where your dwarves dig, craft and enjoy their lives, typically underground, but find it hard to get into because of its lack of a tutorial? Do you also happen to like the idea of Dungeon Keeper, where you build a dungeon of despair and evil, forging a nasty legacy of destroying the forces of good? Well, if you do, you should most definitely pick up this game, as it blends these games in what seems like a very natural way. The game features a turn-based gameplay, where you mine out a dungeon, or build an above-ground village, where you house your minions, whilst they attack elves, humans and dwarves and defeat epic beasts like dragons, hydras and demons. Do be warned however: You will most likely lose a lot of your bases as this game takes its difficulty seriously if you don't know what you're doing. Charging blindly ahead will most likely make you have a bad time, as those elves, humans and dwarves that are still alive, not to mention the epic beasts, will notice that you are defeating their brethren and will try and attack your base. Therefore, you need not only build a base that can house your minions, but you also will need to ensure it is well defended. And here is the crux - there is very little wiggle room if you want to make sure that you actually beat them. Prioritise the wrong research and you will find yourself in a losing position. Spend resources on things that do not ensure your survival and you will find yourself not surviving. The standard difficulty is quite brutal, and you have to take your time to learn from what went wrong in the game where you were defeated. There is always a reason why, but finding what went wrong is not always the simplest to do. Luckily, this difficulty can be tuned quite a bit if you're not into that - attacks can outright be turned off, the amount of allies, villains and so on can be changed, and you can change the enemy difficulty curve as well, to alter the game's leniency with your mistakes. Either way, if you've come across this game and like the idea behind Dwarf Fortress and Dungeon Keeper, do yourself a favour and pick this game up.
