This game is a hidden gem - very good pixel art with gameplay reminiscent of 90's platformers. It has very good level design and balanced game play. Very polished in all regards.

Really cute and fun platformer. Played on the higher difficulty and it was challenging, even when I wasn't going for the optional collectibles.

The game can get quite challenging in places and the platforming feels great, very smooth. Kaze imitates Donkey Kong Country as much as it can. You're collecting 4 letters in each stage, there are bonus barrels hidden in stages.. Many of the same types of enemies.. A helicopter spin to hover in the air like Dixie Kong.. Many of the same tricks DKC uses to change up the platforming in levels are present here too, like: -A blowing wind the stops and starts, requiring you to time your jumps with the movement of the wind. -Barrels that you jump into and use to launch into other barrels (in the form of crossbows/slings here) -A stage where you need to constantly flick the light switch on/off. -Minecarts (not an actual minecart, but the same effect via the dragon mask). -Slime Climb This list could go on and on.. and it all probably sounds great if you're a fan of that series (I am. Big fan). Unfortunately Kaze is a bit of a poor mans Donkey Kong. The game doesn't have as much charm all over really. The animal buddies in Donkey Kong Country were more organic and charming than the masks that fulfil the same role here. The cutscenes in this game I ended up skipping because they were quite basic and uninteresting. The music in this game is dull compared to the moody melodies composed by David Wise for DKC. You can hear a bit of inspiration in this, but without some good melodies it's ultimately resulted in dull background music rather than moody & melodic foreground music. There's some missing features and QoL issues when comparing this to DKC too. ..Like how you can't change which side of a rope you are holding onto.. Or how you are normally pressing B to hover in the air, but when you're transformed into a particular form it instead does a down smash, which out of habit you will press intending to tailspin. ..Lots of little things like that which add up to remind you that you're playing something of lower quality. The game is pretty short. The levels themselves are pretty short too, and none of them ever open up as much as some DKC levels did. If you're unaware of it, check out Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair . It was made by some of the guys who did Donkey Kong Country and they even got David Wise to compose for it. I'd say it's a better game, with a really nice hub world to explore between levels. In fact, that's another little thing that Kaze could do better. The map and hub screen is less interesting than that of DKC, it doesn't capture my imagination in the same way. It feels like I'm just on a level select screen, rather than exploring a continent, wondering what that next area on the horizon is. The Game Boy versions of the Donkey Kong Country games were quite good also, I think Donkey Kong Land 2 might actually be my favourite of the series somehow. While Kaze could be bigger, better and more charming compared to DKC, I admit that it actually gets a lot of it right as well, and to cut it some slack; DKC left some big shoes to fill. Kaze is worth a look if you loved DKC, but don't expect it to rival the excellence of that franchise. I hope these devs go on to make another game in a similar vein, but change their composer and try to improve on a lot of it.

Not done yet with it but having fun so far but there's a big problem, it's likely to not affect many but there are so many damn flashbangs in this game. Get into the bonus game level -> game flashes bright white. Pick up bonus game collectibles -> game flashes bright white. Get to the end of a stage -> game flashes bright white. Again at the result screen -> game flashes bright white. When the result screen is done tallying it up -> game flashes bright white. Collecting powerups -> game flashes bright white. Changing map screen -> game flashes bright white. Would have really liked a photosensitive mode that turned those into fade to black instead to avoid all the flashes, it makes me nauseous and gives me a headache so i can only play a level at a time before i need to take a break >:( Other than that i works fine but really damn annoying, not enough to give a negative rating (as it's a personal problem, not the game breaking would be unfair if i did). Play time will be heavily inflated as i just leave it on while i recover, can take an hour or more before i bother with it again. the game actually won't take all that long to play so disregard my time if you want to know ~how long it is. Edit: 100% run completed, that last boss was awful, double area denial and rng placement for stuff made it darn annoying to play, the final part of it was hard to see what was part of the foreground and what you were supposed to interact with. And the damn flashbangs was everywhere, every stage transition they decided to just blind their players and there are 4 of them ever few minutes. Why the hell did they decided that anytime you move somewhere else to throw up a pure white screen at max brightness and have bright flashes during gameplay >:( It's still not a bad game but this really soured the experience for me, will be just a one and done type of game, not worth playing through again.

Ended up striking gold I was simply looking for some retro-inspired platforming game while waiting for major releases. Noticed Kaze and Wild Masks lost and forgotten amidst other games in my library and decided to give it a shot. I struck gold - that was definitely one of the best choices I could have made in pixel-art gaming!! Donkey Kong Country trilogy copy-paste? Well, (a big) yes and no. Yes: Kaze and The Wild Masks is in fact DK-like. This experience was so close to the trilogy that it has brought tears to my eyes while playing. I really needed to play something as such and was unaware of it. It's undeniable - the game isn't original when it comes to ideas. All of them are taken from the source: level design; moves (such as the helicopter glide thingy or the spinning attack); how to defeat enemies; animal transformations; bonuses; how to beat the bonuses; how to hide bonuses and coins, and so on. Wouldn't be surprised if an eventual Kaze 2 implemented a co-op system between two characters, like Diddy Kong and Dixie Kong. If you lived the SNES era, you will notice some ideas taken from Super Mario World too. Is that bad? Can't tell for sure what you guys would expect, but as of me, not at all. That's a huge pro! No: at the same time, being a DK-ish isn't exactly downright copy-paste. The Brazilian developers have managed to explore extremely well the possibilities and the resources at hand, creating a totally fluid, engaging game through a gameplay experience that takes you back with absolute competence. That means at the same time you see and feel the inspiration, you get a new experience, tough to be created. It's crystal clear they had a clear insight of what Donkey Kong is like and how to reproduce the ideas. They've surely spent hundreds or thousands of hours of their lives playing the trilogy. Just grab it! I've had a blast with Kaze and The Wild Masks and simply couldn't put it down. That got me regretting the game was too short. Wish it were longer - and deserved that, because I haven't had enough of it. The devs have put a lot of their hearts and dedication into it. Kaze and The Wild Masks is probably the best 2D DK-like platforming game you will find up to this day. Just play it!
