TLDR: One of the most odious protagonists in point and click adventure history remains almost as disgusting and unpleasant as before. General Thoughts/Overview: Kathy Rain Directors cut (KRDC) existing is an interesting conundrum. Is it really its own game? Iād argue it isnāt, but it is superior to the regular cut in every conceivable metric. Back in 2021 I said that I āhated every second I had to listen to the insufferable prick of a protagonist vomiting their bad attitude and treating everyone around them like they were nothing.ā I then begrudgingly recommended the game because it was put together so well. This remains true. So what has changed in the directorās cut? Basically nothing. The story is near identical, although the ending has been altered to make it a lot less handwavey, and also reframes quite a bit to give it a less magical BS vibe. The puzzles are essentially the same, but with an extra step or two, again to flesh it out a little and shoo some of that Deus Ex Machina away. All that doesn't sound too encouraging. So, firstly, is this game any good? ā Yes, itās better than the original by miles. Secondly is it different enough from the first to warrant repurchasing? ā No. Itās the same game. Different, but the same. I reviewed the OG in July of 2021, if you are considering whether or not to buy Kathy Rain at all then you can see the pros and cons of getting the game there. Overall I did give it the thumbs up, despite Kathyās best efforts to sink her own game, and this DC is an improvement on that game. Thus the remainder of this review will be comparing the OG and DC, and if you want the game but arenāt sure if the extra 5 quid is worth it for the DC, then this might be of interest to you. Pros: [*] The smooth lined interface is a literal godsend. It is such a massive improvement on the original that the gameplay almost canāt be compared. The intuitive single click of the DC makes the OG gameplay feel twice as worse, with its unintuitive nature sometimes needing 3 or 4 clicks to achieve the same outcome. This is even more strongly felt by the double click to change scene and the hotspot highlight, cutting down frustration and time waste. [*] The DC restructuring of the plot and additional scenes give Kathy a ton more character, make us feel like weāre guiding her and using her skills, and generally improve on the OG story telling by a country mile. Donāt get me wrong, Iām still rooting for something terrible to happen to her, but at least she has some scenes where her vulnerability and softer side donāt appear entirely fraudulent. [*] The graphical changes are actually really welcome. I didnāt expect the ratio and widescreen adaptations to mean much, but they make the game so much nicer to explore. Itās little things like not having to move between areas in the same scene, and everything feeling a little cleaner and more clear that really give the DC a nicer touch and a better feel. Plus the vistas have more personality to them given the increase in scope afforded by a wider screen. It makes Conwell springs and its associated areas feel more real, and look even better. Cons: [*] The DC doesnāt bring anything new to the table story wise. It had the opportunity to create side stories, and flesh out the other characters. We could have visited more of Grandpaās vet friends, like the pair at the funeral. We could have learned more about Eileen, and why she puts up with Kathy, as well as investigated their uncomfortable friendship and her odd array of friends. We could have learned about Lenny and the Sheriff, could have seen more of Grandma, met more cultists, and spent more time with Goobar. We didnāt. The game had opportunities to make the mysteries deeper and wider, but it didnāt. [*] The DC isnāt a new game and experience. It doesnāt add a layer of complexity to the puzzles or give us a shot at a hard mode, to really get that point and click feeling. It didnāt raise any new questions, solve any asked ones, or add to the core or the OG in any way. [*] Iām not sure the DC can justify its existence. The Devās added 5% to the game and asked for 50% more. Honestly, Iām not entirely sure if itās just a scamā¦ Make basic QoL changes, flesh things out a little, fix a bunch of issues in the first, and then claim itās a new game and slap a full release price tag on it? Talk about disrespecting and milking your audience. Suggested improvements: [*] A skip animation button. I cannot stress how much this was needed. The double click to transition was a great start, but good lord do we need this. And while weāre at it, the scene transitions need to be about Ā¼ of the length they currently are. [*] A little more fleshing out of the characters and relationships. I really liked there was a bit more to everyone in this, but it really was marginal. I guess I might be asking for a bit much. Both the DC and the OG have quite snappy pacing, and the sort of girth Iām suggesting here might hinder thatā¦ but it would make the characters more interesting and help detract from the kind of meh plot. [*] Controversial maybe, but Iād say scrap the OG and completely replace it with this. Having both out is quite misleading, in my opinion. I genuinely think this entire DC should have just been a patch, or a 2-3 quid DLC as I appreciate it will have cost both time and monetary resources to bring the cast back and make the improvements madeā¦ I just donāt think it justifies the total cost and the new page. Overall Recommendation: If youāre here to see if itās worth getting KRDC in addition to KROG. No. It isnāt. Even with 50% off as a previous owner AND the winter sale, I would say I still massively overpaid for this. It isnāt worth it for you who have already experienced the game. If youāre here as a new comer, and are comparing the two versions. Yes. KRDC is clearly superior to the OG in every single way, in fact its shortcomings are the things it didnāt iterate on, and not the things it did. If youāre here just for Kathy Rain? Then this game isnāt for kiddies, and it isnāt for PnC vets looking for a challenge. But it is an excellent tribute to the old school PnCās and the nostalgia alone will carry it far. It is well suited to newcomers and makes for a chill adventure. I still begrudgingly recommend it despite hating the protagonist, but much less begrudgingly than before.
