This game is a personal deep experience. It's purely a memento for those who suffered or are suffering from those specific events in life. It can teach you a lot about the weight a dark past can put in your shoulders, all the traumas and pain you're facing due to them, how you need to free yourself off the chains of guilty and shame from things that are not your fault, neither a burden to keep. You can still improve and safe the lives of those that matter to you the most. You can make a difference at events that you have control of. It's a game about breaking a generational curse. It's a game about find out a solution and keep you forward on the track. The game is just "on point" to me, literally. if you like Point & Click genre in games, this one is a must buy. Great soundtrack and also a good end resolution for players looking for detailed unfolding stories.

As a point & click adventure enthusiast, this is one of the best I've played. The puzzles are designed logically according to the story and you can guess what should be done next to achieve your goal, which I think is the most important factor for a successful point & click adventure game. The theme and story really drew me in and the badass motorcyclist protagonist reminded me a beloved game, Full Throttle.

90s vibes, pixel art, a smoking leather wearing motorcycle riding protagonist who's fond of sarcasm - this is exactly the kind of game I adore and can't find enough of. This is one of my more favorite examples of this genre too: the puzzles are just challenging enough to be fun without being intimidating (aside from one waaaay too complex computer one), the characters are finely drawn, and the story gets more and more insane the further into the game you get. I've played it through a few times now largely because I love the world it evokes that much.

Kathy Rain is a sentimental reminiscence of 90s classics. MC feels like a descendant of Gabriel Knight, Laura Bow and Ben Throttle. She can be quite the jerk, but at least she acknowledges it. Still, most of the time, she's a typical protagonist girl with attitude. The story is interesting, although a bit clichƩd at times. The theme shift in the final chapters is a bit weird, but fits the narration of games Kathy Rain is inspired by. Puzzles are on the easy side and there is very little moon logic involved, but you can get some nifty achievements when you try to apply it. I really enjoyed the visuals, and the soundtrack and dubbing were alright.

TLDR: One of the most odious protagonists in point and click adventure history remains almost as disgusting and unpleasant as before. General Thoughts/Overview: Kathy Rain Directors cut (KRDC) existing is an interesting conundrum. Is it really its own game? Iā€™d argue it isnā€™t, but it is superior to the regular cut in every conceivable metric. Back in 2021 I said that I ā€œhated every second I had to listen to the insufferable prick of a protagonist vomiting their bad attitude and treating everyone around them like they were nothing.ā€ I then begrudgingly recommended the game because it was put together so well. This remains true. So what has changed in the directorā€™s cut? Basically nothing. The story is near identical, although the ending has been altered to make it a lot less handwavey, and also reframes quite a bit to give it a less magical BS vibe. The puzzles are essentially the same, but with an extra step or two, again to flesh it out a little and shoo some of that Deus Ex Machina away. All that doesn't sound too encouraging. So, firstly, is this game any good? ā€“ Yes, itā€™s better than the original by miles. Secondly is it different enough from the first to warrant repurchasing? ā€“ No. Itā€™s the same game. Different, but the same. I reviewed the OG in July of 2021, if you are considering whether or not to buy Kathy Rain at all then you can see the pros and cons of getting the game there. Overall I did give it the thumbs up, despite Kathyā€™s best efforts to sink her own game, and this DC is an improvement on that game. Thus the remainder of this review will be comparing the OG and DC, and if you want the game but arenā€™t sure if the extra 5 quid is worth it for the DC, then this might be of interest to you. Pros: [*] The smooth lined interface is a literal godsend. It is such a massive improvement on the original that the gameplay almost canā€™t be compared. The intuitive single click of the DC makes the OG gameplay feel twice as worse, with its unintuitive nature sometimes needing 3 or 4 clicks to achieve the same outcome. This is even more strongly felt by the double click to change scene and the hotspot highlight, cutting down frustration and time waste. [*] The DC restructuring of the plot and additional scenes give Kathy a ton more character, make us feel like weā€™re guiding her and using her skills, and generally improve on the OG story telling by a country mile. Donā€™t get me wrong, Iā€™m still rooting for something terrible to happen to her, but at least she has some scenes where her vulnerability and softer side donā€™t appear entirely fraudulent. [*] The graphical changes are actually really welcome. I didnā€™t expect the ratio and widescreen adaptations to mean much, but they make the game so much nicer to explore. Itā€™s little things like not having to move between areas in the same scene, and everything feeling a little cleaner and more clear that really give the DC a nicer touch and a better feel. Plus the vistas have more personality to them given the increase in scope afforded by a wider screen. It makes Conwell springs and its associated areas feel more real, and look even better. Cons: [*] The DC doesnā€™t bring anything new to the table story wise. It had the opportunity to create side stories, and flesh out the other characters. We could have visited more of Grandpaā€™s vet friends, like the pair at the funeral. We could have learned more about Eileen, and why she puts up with Kathy, as well as investigated their uncomfortable friendship and her odd array of friends. We could have learned about Lenny and the Sheriff, could have seen more of Grandma, met more cultists, and spent more time with Goobar. We didnā€™t. The game had opportunities to make the mysteries deeper and wider, but it didnā€™t. [*] The DC isnā€™t a new game and experience. It doesnā€™t add a layer of complexity to the puzzles or give us a shot at a hard mode, to really get that point and click feeling. It didnā€™t raise any new questions, solve any asked ones, or add to the core or the OG in any way. [*] Iā€™m not sure the DC can justify its existence. The Devā€™s added 5% to the game and asked for 50% more. Honestly, Iā€™m not entirely sure if itā€™s just a scamā€¦ Make basic QoL changes, flesh things out a little, fix a bunch of issues in the first, and then claim itā€™s a new game and slap a full release price tag on it? Talk about disrespecting and milking your audience. Suggested improvements: [*] A skip animation button. I cannot stress how much this was needed. The double click to transition was a great start, but good lord do we need this. And while weā€™re at it, the scene transitions need to be about Ā¼ of the length they currently are. [*] A little more fleshing out of the characters and relationships. I really liked there was a bit more to everyone in this, but it really was marginal. I guess I might be asking for a bit much. Both the DC and the OG have quite snappy pacing, and the sort of girth Iā€™m suggesting here might hinder thatā€¦ but it would make the characters more interesting and help detract from the kind of meh plot. [*] Controversial maybe, but Iā€™d say scrap the OG and completely replace it with this. Having both out is quite misleading, in my opinion. I genuinely think this entire DC should have just been a patch, or a 2-3 quid DLC as I appreciate it will have cost both time and monetary resources to bring the cast back and make the improvements madeā€¦ I just donā€™t think it justifies the total cost and the new page. Overall Recommendation: If youā€™re here to see if itā€™s worth getting KRDC in addition to KROG. No. It isnā€™t. Even with 50% off as a previous owner AND the winter sale, I would say I still massively overpaid for this. It isnā€™t worth it for you who have already experienced the game. If youā€™re here as a new comer, and are comparing the two versions. Yes. KRDC is clearly superior to the OG in every single way, in fact its shortcomings are the things it didnā€™t iterate on, and not the things it did. If youā€™re here just for Kathy Rain? Then this game isnā€™t for kiddies, and it isnā€™t for PnC vets looking for a challenge. But it is an excellent tribute to the old school PnCā€™s and the nostalgia alone will carry it far. It is well suited to newcomers and makes for a chill adventure. I still begrudgingly recommend it despite hating the protagonist, but much less begrudgingly than before.
