I adore this game, it's just the right mix of casual and challenging. You run a card shop and try to keep ahead of trends to make a good profit. E.g. a pro player says they love a certain deck, so the price of those specific cards goes up. McDonalds gives cards away in a free promotion, so they lose value. You are constantly scouring eBay looking for a good deal on cards you can then sell in your shop. It sounds simple but once several trends are in play at once it can be challenging to keep on top of things. There are quite a lot of traits that can effect the value of a card - what set is it from? How strong is it? Is it in good condition? Is it a foil card? Are cards with that ability popular in tournaments right now? etc, etc There are lots of other things you can do like host tournaments, booster pack parties, clearance sales, etc. You get special orders by phone, and can earn decorations by completing mini-objectives. None of these are super in-depth, but still help add dimension to the game and make it more immersive. I thought the story and characters in the game were charming, and hilarious. There is a lot of sarcasm and references to popular card games or anime. The only draw-back of the game is that there is only a couple of hours of story content available. You can continue running the store, new card sets will still get released every so often (there are LOADS of sets), but the game definitely suffers from losing it's overarching plot. The most appealing objective in the game for me is collecting a foil version of every card in the game, but this takes a reeeeeally long time to actually achieve. I've gone for this twice now and end up quitting at roughly the 5 hour mark when the game just gets too repetitive to continue. There are no long-term goals you are saving money for or anything so it's easy to lose motivation. They did add a battle mode where you can actually play the card game, but it's not very compelling. I think the price is a bit high for essentially having 5 hours of gameplay, though I can see myself doing additional playthroughs every now and then as I enjoyed it so much. I dream of a sequel to this game with a long story, shop upgrades, extra mechanics etc :)

I've been playing for 4.7 hours as of writing my review, and my impression of the game has been really positive. I love the mini-storyline, which contains humor but is a bit short, along with the unique characters, cards, and decorations for your card shop. I've been searching for a game that represents a trading card gameplay experience, and Kardboard Kings does a perfect job. It includes different types of rarities, decks, abilities, and more for each card. There is also news to keep track of changes within the cards that greatly affect their prices, and the game features a battle mode where you can experience combat with the Warlock deck. Of course, there is one negative aspect within the game, but it can vary from person to person. For me, it’s the reputation system, which has a huge impact on running a successful card shop. I feel there could have been a better way to include it without such a big negative impact. Overall, the game is great. The art and music are extremely well done by the developers from Akupara Games studios. I would recommend this game to any TCG player!

I had a very good time, the artwork and card descriptions always make me smile. I wished there was more story content in the game, though.

TL;DR: 6/10, basically the same ratio of how much game they've actually released. But it's relaxing and chill as long you avoid actually playing the card game. Wait for half price off or more. ----------------- Kardboard Kings is a frustrating one, I'd definitely recommend it. But I just feel like it's a couple of beers short of being a six pack and the game really does feel undercooked... most of the time. But that being said, what is there is fantastic and fun, I just wish they made more of it. Take for instance the "Story", after you've got to grips with the daily running of the shop and have met all your customers for the first time, you've essentially already completed 60% of the story. They have three or four more events unfurl after this, which largely amounts to nothing after the first big story beat. But that's not all, you have customers! And can get to know them and help them to raise your rep. They will each ask you such things such as, which deck can win, do you want to buy a card for half/twice the price that you can sell it or receive a rep hit. Or finally they will show you a card without the name and you'll have to guess the name. That card they ask you never changes, they just repeatedly ask you what the name is of the same card. Ad nauseam. Again, what's there is good, great even. You just kind of wish they put more than 5 minutes of thought/programming into it. Speaking of running the shop, once you've gotten used to the small store you own, you'll be able to upgrade! Oh wait no, the only "upgrade" is how it looks which affects nothing really, you can't make the store bigger, you can't get stands, hell you can't even move the existing display cases around. If the game feels somewhat manageable after the tutorial, get used to it, it never gets any more difficult than the first 10 minutes. And lastly, the card game element, after all this is part card game. You can only play in a tournament (Which takes about an hour on a good day to win, take into consideration that you can probably play through like a month of in game time in that time alone, but instead, you're doing one day!) You can't construct a deck with the cards you actually own, each time you join a tournament you get randoms. The balancing is... yeah, being able to build your own deck would've saved it, but as it stands, the card game is my least favourite part about this game, just frustrating and could easily be outbeat by most phone games. Playing the game right now, it still feels like a very VERY early beta. This is the released product.
