It's a beat-em-up Vampire Survivors and is far better than it has any right to be. Your moves happen automatically and cycle through and once it has finished a single cycle, you have about 5 seconds of down time before it does attacks again. Moves are unlocked randomly and same colours do additional damage and then when they're put in order, flow better. Initially, I hated that mechanic because in similar games, I don't really remember it being there or the down time isn't as obvious. But I stuck with it and in the end, completely understood why it had to be like that and ended up loving it. The moves are varied to keep it interesting (although I found about half of them aren't worth using) and upgrades mostly matter. It's not going to make GOTY but for the price, this is an easy recommendation.

On the harder difficulties the weapons might get you killed. Maybe implement a manual throw option?

Great looking pixel art. Music finds a nice balance of keeping the energy without becoming grating over 15+ minute missions. You control where your karate man moves. That's it. There is just enough nuance to keep the game engaging between when to save, use or avoid pick-ups and optimizing your hits on the attack timer. Variety comes from how you set up your combos, sometimes taking less desirable moves for the sake of making everything else stronger because it's part of the chain. 3 difficulty settings change up gameplay just enough to go from walk in the park to getting deleted if you don't watch your spacing. Small Gripes: Unlocking some of the moves is the most time consuming RNG heavy grinds I've experienced. 15+ minutes just for a CHANCE to get the unlock, which cannot be shared by similar unlocks, AND you have to get the right killing blow after all of that. This might be fixed if there are later patches, as there might be a bug causing progress to not always register. Update on Nov 7, 2024 resolved this one! Weapons and objects don't scale with level, making them strong at the start and potentially the reason you die towards the end. This is a small gripe because a benefit turns into a hazard late game, which is an interesting mechanic (even if unintentional). The actual issue is a bug causing these items to be invisible sometimes. Mini-boss enemies can sometimes 1-shot you on the highest difficulty, invalidating any attempts at selecting defensive options through a mission. Possibly a bug as well. They're also suppose to have a highlight to indicate being a mini-boss, which also doesn't always show up, leading to a surprise death to what you thought was a normal enemy. These gripes have very little impact on the actual experience and may potential be addressed in future patches. A great buy over all, especially for the price.

It's a short, flashy and very sweet take on VS formula, but w/o any sort of build variety. There's around 10 hours of gameplay here to unlock everything, but for the price I think Karate Survivor is fully worth it.

This game is a pretty unique take on the Vampire Survivors-style genre. When I first watched the trailer, I thought it was going to be a mix of a beat-em-up and Survivors game—and it kinda is. But at its core, it’s still a Vampire Survivors setup: you auto-attack (melee in this case), and tons of enemies deal damage on collision. Although, I noticed they don't hurt you when you're pulling off a combo. You get to mix and match moves from different martial arts, not just karate, which is awesome. And, using a plastic flamingo to smack punks? Hilarious! Yeah, you’ll die now and then, but that just unlocks more moves and upgrades for the next run. I’m still getting the hang of moving around and using the environment. The bar level is definitely tougher than the supermarket, but it's a fun challenge. Definitely recommend this, especially for the price!
