Super creative and fun city building roguelike! I love that there are so many fantastical creatures, and the fact that you can just tame these goliaths is pretty alluring. The roguelike elements work way better in a city builder than I expected. You basically place down your campfire, which gives you a range to build in, and unlock a house type that gives different buffs to your village. Your thinker can then explore the map to discover new buildings that produce food, resources, or trains villagers into soldiers. When you finish a game, you get karma, which you can use to unlock more buildings to find in your games. There are several creative areas to unlock, each with different building strategies, and there are several different thinkers you can unlock to play as. Each thinker has a loadout of festivals that have useful abilities for your village! I experienced a handful of bugs, but for the most part the game is very polished and runs well. For the developer reading, here are some bugs I encountered so far. I had an enemy attack me and build ladders on my land, and I was unable to destroy or deconstruct the ladders, and the villagers got stuck on them and bricked their path finding. The ability to destroy or deconstruct any building would probably be enough to fix this. I also had build a floating platform that happened to be near a cliff. The villagers routed to the top of the cliff instead of crossing the platform when I tried to have them cross, and the platform was not able to be deconstructed. There is also a bug where when you put villagers or soldiers on a strider with a platform, and have them jump off, the rider's icon does not clear from the menu. This doesn't stop the functionality, it just makes it very confusing. Purely a visual bug. I also had one round with an inexplicable lag spike, but I couldn't figure out the cause. The village was not large, I didn't see anything crazy going on, and after a few minutes the lag went away. I have seen the occasional floating enemy units, but that doesn't really bug me. This may sound like a lot of bugs but honestly they are not very common from my experience so far, so do not let this list of bugs deter you from trying this game.

This game is fantastic. Until it sucks. It's a wild ride with such highs and lows. I'd give it a solid B- at this point. A neutral rating if I could. It would be a straight up A game, amazing in so many ways, if it weren't for the absolute awful UI implementation for an otherwise very polished game. It's so frustrating at times. You'll lose a ridiculous amount of runs simply due to the UI. It's so mind bogglingly bad at times that I wonder how the developer even plays the game without noticing. Selecting units? Awful. Selecting multiple units? Nearly impossible. Want to find where your warrior has wandered off to? Literally impossible without wasting dozens of minutes scouring the map. There are SO MANY quality of life improvements games have implemented a decade+ before this one came out, so it leaves me astounded that they were left out of this one. Pathing problems too, though not quite as game breaking. With all of these glaring faults, I'm still 20+ hours into the game because it's so good otherwise. I just hope hope HOPE that the developer works on polishing the last little bits to make this a knockout, slam dunk game for the ages. Also, priests are miserable to deal with. The enemy can use them to perfection. Meanwhile, I try and attack the one that is converting my unit and can't get ANYONE in my squads to go poke them due to pathing/UI issues. But when I have a priest of my own and try to convert an enemy? The AI can poke them without issue, making priests basically useless for players and overwhelmingly difficult to deal with in return. Hate them with a passion.

Kainga is really unique roguelike city (or more of a village) builder. It's not perfect: it can be buggy, and pathfinding can be finicky; you often have to manually guide your villagers. Some mechanics aren't explained outright to the player, which is not inherently bad as it means you have to experiment, and the short game times -- 30-90 mins -- benefits this even more. There's also lots of variety: dozens of unique technologies within groups (food, shelter, warfare etc.); 8 playable 'Thinkers', Kainga's playable characters, each with a B-side that plays differently; and 8 different biomes, all feeling very different from one another -- although maps within the same respective biome can often feel the same with repeating map plots. Modifiers can have drastic effects on map generation, but as of writing this review, modifiers can be inconsistent and often don't work, generating a regular map. The solo dev is also active within the Discord, responding to player feedback and bug reports, and as of writing this review is still working on free new content. I think Kainga is worth it at full price, especially if you enjoy stylistic city builders.

Wow. This little game somehow manages to be so simple, yet deeper than the majority of even AAA titles being released. Not only that, but the Dev is highly responsive and keeps adding new updates. I have 8 hours in this rogue-like city builder and I've only beaten 3 levels but I just keep coming back for more. I plan to 100% this one.

Honestly one of the best games in city builder genre. It is such a unique mix of strategy that requires out of the box thinking. The progression system is really nice and the soundtrack is a banger. There are some weird quirks/bugs once in a while but it does not take away from the overall enjoyment of the game. Would recommend.
