It's ok. For the price, it's certainly not bad. Granted, I bought it on sale despite how cheap it already is. I recommend it as a nice little distraction, not as something deep to sink your teeth into unless it just happens to really click with you or you like the PVP mode. It has some fun interactions, but a chunk of the achievements (which are also how you unlock things) are too railroady to allow for experimentation unless you want to take the really slow route. Each new area you go into, expect to have to do a run with two of each of the new units to unlock them and a third unit everywhere and no freedom to mix and match, or alternatively take two separate runs with at least one focusing entirely on the new units and another having at least two of the same of them. This lends to the game becoming tiring a bit faster. Slow movement, runs only ever being 2 "stages" (areas with their own encounter paths) and being unable to unlock achievements in endless (called "looping"), small arenas, and no alternate upgrades add to this problem more. This game is most interesting when you are able to do unusual combinations, but the game's unlocks and conditions aren't interested in that. With these things in mind, I still recommend it due to its unique take on the genre and some of said fun interactions, I just think it could be better.

Great little game for the price. Has some rough spots, but the mechanics are solid. Works perfectly on deck. If you loved Brotato and are considering this, please don't hesitate.

A great little game that I've only recently come back to after buying it essentially on launch. Now that its reached a full 1.0 release I am quite impressed by the level of polish that the game offers at its price point. The music sits comfortably above being too repetitive, the gameplay is satisfying multiple times through, particularly when challenge hunting, and difficulty is nicely balanced. If anyone is craving an itch for a light-strategy auto-battler with decent interaction, you can't go wrong with this title. It looks like there is controller/steam deck support, though I have yet to try it myself. The mouse + keyboard configurations work well enough, and if you're especially lazy like me you might appreciate the mouse-only control mode, though it makes control in combat a bit tougher. The inclusion of the cook (and other token-based merchants) is awesome, just barely unlocked that and am so glad there is a purpose to extra tokens now, though I wish it was unlocked a little sooner.

I’ve enjoyed my time playing Just King, and can see myself continuing to play it for a long time. It’s casual insofar as it’s easy to pick up and play, but there’s enough complexity and replayability that something comes up in every run that surprises me. The game’s presentation is very silly. The art is bright and colourful, and each character has a lot of personality. I’m endlessly impressed at how distinct each hero looks given the simplicity of the art style. The music is also incredible, with multiple bouncy, high-energy tracks. Though most of the gameplay is fighting waves of enemies, there are occasional event nodes where you’re presented with a prompt and several options of how to respond. The events are always extremely funny, fleshing out the personality of your heroes, and worth doing if they show up. I normally don’t like achievements in games, but Just King ties most of them to actual accomplishments or unique event outcomes, and even the achievement names are funny. What keeps me replaying, however, is the variety of heroes. There are over 30 at the time I’m writing this, and they’re all unique. You’re able to surround your king with up to four per playthrough, and they synergise and work together in different ways. There are melee and ranged fighters, mages, healers, a cyclops, even the sun. Each hero has multiple abilities, some of which overlap with others (the cleric and paladin both have a basic heal ability, for example), but is ultimately unique in its gimmick or style of play. After using every hero multiple times, I found every one of them viable and interesting if given a chance and a balanced party to which they can contribute. It’s worthwhile to bring them out in different zones or with different heroes to see how they interact. Each hero has a signature ability they get at level three that affects how you’ll use them and, usually, makes them significantly stronger. Given the breezy nature of the gameplay (though fights can be quite difficult, it’s never too stressful and starting a new run is quick) and the cap of four heroes at a time, I’ve found the game very replayable and fun. I’d highly recommend this game to anyone, especially at its low cost, and am looking forward to whatever VISH makes next.
