tl;dr it's Yakuza but instead of a jacked middle aged dad who is bad at crime, you're a ripped middle aged twink detective who is bad at paying his rent. A really stylish, fun game that was far more like the baseline Yakuza games than I was expecting, which I mean in a complimentary sense. Making the central character a disillusioned former lawyer who still has a strong sense of justice is a good point of difference. Though it touches on many of the same gameplay elements from the Yakuza/Like a Dragon games (flawed father figure/mentors, Government/Police corruption, organizational political infighting, wacky substories, surprisingly wholesome moments right alongside weirdly horny ones, underground casinos galore etc), Yagami's character brings a different perspective from the standard Yakuza protagonist. This is helped also by the subject of the main plotline, which manages to retain a grounded sense of reality even in spite of the enormous implications it would have on the world, while adding real stakes and motivations to the central mystery. The villains are maddening but also you can see the basis of how they have gotten into the position they've gotten themselves into, the lies they have told themselves to insist the ends justify the means (if you have to ask if they do... they don't!), and there's a good mix of both the usual monstrously strong and skilled killers AND seemingly inconsequential or non-threatening men who are by far the more dangerous of the two. If you liked the usual Yakuza/LaD games then there is a lot more of those to be found in this game. But the differences created by the main character, the mystery trappings of the plot, and a shift away from the top level Tojo Clan Families to look at how some of the bottom-feeders and hanger-on families survive makes for a nice change.

I have 20 hours in this game and I'm still on Chapter 1 out of 12. [Edit] After about 20 more hours I'm on chapter 5. This game is long. There is a LOT of content which should surprise no one if you've played the prior games. At first I looked at this game as an obstacle to overcome on my journey through the RRG franchise. A small hurdle on my way back to the JUICE. I didn't realize I was already playing the juice. What a juicy game.

I learned many things from this game. If I'm suspicious that someone is tailing me, I stop, look behind me, and make ridiculous voices. Now I know that stopping every 10 seconds and checking behind yourself is so annoying for people that they stop tailing you, because I had to do these missions many times in this game. I can understand the logic behind it now.

Judgment is one of the best detective games I’ve ever played. The story hooked me from start to finish, with great characters, emotional twists, and plenty of style. Combat feels fast and satisfying, and the mix of investigation, street brawling, and ridiculous side stuff keeps things entertaining the whole time. Kamurocho really feels alive, full of weirdos, and way more to do than you could ever get to. I came in expecting a grounded detective story, and you get that. But I also found myself suplexing dudes over bicycle racks, befriending stray cats, chasing perverts in mascot suits, dating women I met through bizarre side quests, and getting totally emotionally invested in a courtroom drama. Peak fiction. The writing is sharp, the voice acting is great, and the whole game plays out like a top crime series with just the right amount of chaos. The music is fantastic too. It sets the perfect tone for every intense moment, adds to the atmosphere, and even makes the calmer scenes feel more emotional. Some moments really hit hard, and the ending stuck with me in a way few games do. And Tak. Man, Tak got to me. He’s more than just a cool guy in a leather jacket who kicks ass. He’s sharp, thoughtful, and impossible to resist. I want him to own me with a hunger so raw it leaves me trembling and begging for more. Watching his journey unfold hit me way harder than I expected. He’s one of those rare characters who stays with you long after the credits roll. I accidentally fell for the guy and I mean that respectfully… or maybe I don’t 😘 I didn’t expect to get this invested, but the mystery became just part of the journey. There’s a quiet understanding between Tak and Okubo that adds emotional weight. Their struggles and loyalty gave the game a real heart. Judgment is unforgettable.

Huge disappointment. Not even a single boss fight involves a character ripping off their shirt to reveal a physique of a japanese war deity and an advertisement for a local tattoo parlor. Other than that, it's a really good beat-em-up game with a decent story.
