Early Access Release Impression: Jotunnslayer is a good looking Vampire Survivors clone with a balanced progression curve that sticks to the basics of the genre and -for better or worse - does not surprise with any unique or unexpected mechanics. Free-reskilling is a positive aspect that allows you to explore all classes, without being trapped in bad builds. At the current stage I would recommend playing Soulstone Survivors or Nordic Ashes for similar titles with more content; Halls of Torment and Death Must Die for those who want a more Diablo-esque experience, or Crafty Survivors for more unique character design. That being said, Jotunnslayer is a solid game and already offers a fair amount of gameplay, unlockable characters and weapons for its money - so you can't really go wrong with 8,99€ and might even be positively surprised as Early Access progresses. Note that the devs announced price increases as more content will be added, so there is much to win and not much to lose to get it early. If you're unsure whether you should jump in, there's also always the free demo.

Legitimately very good Vampire Survivors with fresh ideas. Can't wait for further development, but even now is definitely worth the price tag. + Visual fidelity + Game feel + Boss mechanics that scale with difficulty + Higher difficulty = additional gameplay variety ~ Hero progression both in & out-of-session could use some inspiration/additional refinement - The latency on XP gem pickup feels so sluggish but that's really my only complaint

Played on Steam Deck: YES! (OLED) Moving from demo to early access has been a pleasant experience. The game is fun, albeit grindy as one would expect from a roguelike. PROS: Great characters to play, fun level design, great weapon and movement mechanics, decent mob diversity, challenges that spawn are fun and give you options so that every run is not the same (once past easy), talent trees and perks grow strength/survivability while adding additional challenges. CONS: The music is painfully boring and repetitive, Every run on easy while character building in the beginning is identical which isn't a major issue other than (ON STEAM DECK) the forced frozen challenge absolutely tanks frame rates by almost 40% immediately upon start of the event and more as more mobs spawn. No in-game option to remap buttons (use deck settings to remap if you want) After sinking bout 6-7 hours into the demo, I have been eagerly awaiting the early access release. I am very happy so-far. Things should just get better going forward and I hope to see more optimization for deck or at least the option to turn off or reduce the full screen effects from the frozen event. In-game settings used for this review: v-sync: enabled fps limit: 60 quality: low tex quality: med shadows: low bloom: on amb occ: med AA: FSR3 - Balanced (performance and ultra performance look awful) gore: on damage numbers: off Deck settings: 15w I will add that these settings so far have given me the most enjoyable play, frames and visuals in both demo and ea. Edit: These settings will give max performance through the ice storm, but at a loss to graphical fidelity v-sync: disabled fps limit: 90 quality: low tex quality: med shadows: disabled bloom: on amb occ: off AA: FSR3 - Balanced gore: on damage numbers: off

Pretty fun game. But honestly, within that crucial first hour of playtime I haven't found that "hook" or something which makes this game stand out among the survivor-likes. I can see it has Hades inspiration with Norse gods empowering you, but Death Must Die does the same and that game has a unique loot driven ARPG twist to it as an example. Hopefully somewhere down the line, there will be that hook or twist, but as of now, I haven't seen it.

I have never fallen in love with a game so quickly. Having played the demo, I was surprised at how much more advanced this game felt in comparison. As you play through you are introduced to more and more things, and so far each of them has made me go "ooh". Visually, I feel this game is stunning. Mechanically, I feel this game is responsive and fluid. I'm not sure what it is, but this game has brought out a joy I have not felt in a very long time with any new game. I am excited to keep playing this. I chose the Seeress for my first play through on easy, didn't take damage. I chose the Berserker for my second play through on normal, got greedy and nearly died. Very excited to try the Revenant and Flame Sister. The scaling in difficulty is amazingly well done, the game play can be as challenging as you want it to be, and the first release of Early Access already feels polished. The developers put a lot of energy into this project and it shows. Finally, I love the golden chickens. They're not really chickens, but after you manage to kill one they turn into "food" which is a cooked chicken, so I will always see them affectionately as golden chickens.
