Bare bones in terms of features, "IT WAS A HUMAN" is a short VN with a somewhat interesting story that touches on some heavy topics. Choices matter, and you have different routes/endings to explore. The AI art looks interesting as standalone pieces, but it makes the game visually inconsistent. It's cheap, but still, if you're interested, I would suggest you buy it on sale.

Okay this game has some problems but this is such a touching story. The themes of self punishment and loneliness really hit close to home and the surreal storytelling is executed perfectly. So... the ai art. I think sometimes it works wonderfully in the backgrounds to create surrealism and a truly alien feeling. However, other times it creates visual inconsistency that is hard to ignore. I also just don't think ai art should have been used for any of the character designs, those look really bad and out of place. Additionally, minor detail, but the ending song just feels so out of place. That being said if this game gets a visual remaster one day with some additional story content this actually may be a favorite vn of mine which is surprising considering how short it is. It sort of hits a lot of the same Denpa vibes that SubaHibi or Saya no Uta does for me, which is saying a lot.

tl;dr a pretty neat game unfortunately bogged down by some pacing issues and a reliance on ai-generated art. gonna preface this with one of my bigger complaints about this game; it makes heavy use of AI generated art. most of it feels superfluous, as if it never needed to be there. some of it looks really good (e.g. the victims' bodies), but the fact that it is just AI generated with barely any human input really detracts from the artistic value it has to me. if you don't care about ai art, then it shouldn't be a problem, but i personally really dislike it. the art actually made by an artist (e.g. the main character) looks really good and clearly isn't ai generated, so it makes me wonder why all the other art wasn't just drawn too. thing is, i weirdly think the ai art is actually relevant to the plot, with the world just being a fake illusion made in the main character's image, thus the lack of "real" content reflects the 'fakeness' of the world . im still torn bc it could be great with real art, but i understand the artistic choice. this game's story itself is pretty neat. i think it dawdles on kinda meaningless dives into the main character's philosophy when you can already kinda gather her views and perspective from the way she acts. only a few of the details of her long rambles end up even mattering (the most prevalent one is the knowledge that she doesn't value her life, so in a late game scene where you need to give up parts of yourself for freedom from the fake world, her heart ends up being the wrong answer, as opposed to her ring finger ). overall though, the game is largely a dive into her psychology. it sets itself up as a murder mystery, but you quickly realise that the murder itself is less important than what's really going on with her. the game's ending is decent, albeit very "anime". i don't know how else to put it lol, it kinda becomes a shonen story and is very blatant and not at all subtle with its themes. however, overall, as i said before, i liked the game's story, and that's what matters the most in a visual novel. NOTE: the game tells you there is no "right answer" to the final sequence of questions. do not believe it, or you might think the game's bad endings are the true ending. there is a specific set of answers that lead you to progress; luckily, it isn't too difficult to deduce with how the game reveals information to you, but if some poor sap is reading this after getting the bad ending, the biggest hint is when the main character tells you this world is a contradiction , so clearly, choose the sequence of answers that (initially seem to) contradict each other . if you still can't figure it out, the answers are "WHO IS SHE: The creator of the world" and "WHO ARE YOU: The creator of the world" last point, the game makes attempts at being a horror game at times. it'll flash random "realistic" ai-generated photos on screen to freak you out. the problem is that when images are ai-gen'd, it reduces the fear factor given i know it can't generate anything truly meticulously designed by a person to scare me. AI has no mind, no conscious, so it literally doesn't have the capacity to come up with things that truly scare people. ok thanks for reading my yapping session, good night

Damn, it's really hard for me to recommend it. On the other hand, I don't think it's a bad game - it's extremely specific and with a lot of flaws. There is a thin line between being psychedelic and edgy. It was a human is sometimes crossing this border. There is definitely some good writing, world building and great images. I also liked main characters, general atmosphere and some philosophical takes on what does it mean to be a human being. On the other hand... there are some cheesy fragments accompanied by poorly generated AI images. I will definitely say that use of generative AI for visuals is the biggest flaw - it makes visuals inconsistent (some images tho are great). Technical part of the game is mediocre - there are no settings, you can't play in the full screen mode, skip parts of the text, save manually or even skip lines with space bar. There is an extremely annoying bug at the end that force you to restart the whole game. It took me 2 hours to experience most of the game, and I think it justifies the price tag. If you like strange, short visual novels, you might give it a try. Just be aware that It was a human isn't a criminal game. I would describe it as a reflection on human nature on acid trip, reinforced by AI generated images.

It's not at all what it says on the tin. The story and writing are at times very profound. At the same time, it's trying to be something bigger than it is. The atmosphere is sometimes very well done. Other times it's terribly corny, especially in its use of AI generated imagery. Despite its flaws, it kept me invested the whole way through. All things considered, I think this is a game you will either love or hate.
