Sept. 2025
By my count I've beaten 9 or 10 Contra games. Of those, I've recorded deathless runs on Contra (NES) Super C (NES) Operation C (GB) and Contra 4 (DS). I can't say I made my first completion of Iron Meat look that good. But take it from a guy who knows his Running n' Gunning: This is a good one. There's not much I can say about Iron Meat that you don't know already if you're a fan of this genre, especially Contra in particular. It's just that. It's not putting any bold new spins on the genre, it's not messing with the formula, it's just taking the formula that's already there and doing the hell out of it. It has it all: Little pea-shooter starter gun you can't wait to replace with anything else. Weapon upgrades denoted by letters that could mean any damn thing which fly above you in floating containers or are shot out from pods among the environment (and occasionally provided by friendlies in the background). Two weapon slots you can swap between. An upgrade system which sees your current gun's firepower increased if you pick up a copy. The unrivaled heartbreak of losing a fully upgraded H-gun, whatever that is, to a shot in the toe you just didn't see coming. ...And you know the rest. So, with no need to get overly detailed with this review, let's break this thing down into simple pros and cons. PROS: -It's just Contra. It's not trying to be anything else. It doesn't need to be. -Quite challenging but not overwhelming to newcomers to the genre thanks to many starting lives and a generous point-based extra life system (at least on Normal, I've yet to play it on Hard). -If you pick up a copy of a weapon currently occupying your unequipped slot, it automatically upgrades that weapon rather than putting the copy in the current slot. Picking up a 3rd copy will instead invoke the temporary speed-up upgrade. Pretty good system. -Gun variety feels about right, no one gun feels way OP in every situation, nor does any one gun feel completely useless (though you definitely probably still want to prioritize the fast ones). They're also not exactly the same as the weapons in Contra, despite borrowing so much from the series, mechanically. -Level and enemy designs are great, the pixel art on the bosses is superb and makes looking at up almost as much fun as shooting them. -Unlockable skins as you play to change up your look a bit CONS: -Levels often feel too long. Probably done to pad gameplay in this, the Age of Whiners, but after a while it does make the stage feel repetitive, seeing the same enemies and gimmicks as many times as you do during your interminable march to the right of the screen. -Some visibility problems regarding terrain, not always clear when something is a platform or not, though this isn't an overwhelming problem throughout the game, just a few, key areas. NEUTRAL: -The one Contra-esque thing it IS missing is alternative gameplay formats, such as the tunnel bases of Contra or the top-down stages of Super C. Depending on your tastes, that might not be a bad thing, as I suspect most of us prefer classic scrolling. -The game's aesthetic, while good, is pretty samey. Flesh, blood, metal, and concrete throughout. If you're into it, good news. But you don't exactly come away from it remembering which level was which. All in all, this is exactly what you were probably wanting it to be while looking at the trailer, an all-too-are example of a game which knows its roots, and isn't trying to be cute or clever about it, not trying to be a parody, it's just trying to do the Run n' Gun genre proud. And I'd say in succeeds with flying colors.

this is absolutely fantastic. straight up and down this is the best sidescroll shooter since more than a couple years ago when I first played the mighty HUNTDOWN. I'm a giant fan of the genre - Huntdown's became one of my all-time favorite games. IRON MEAT isn't Huntdown, I don't think, but then nothing really is. this is more a straight old school run-gun CONTRA thing, which is absolutely more than fine with me. from what I saw of it, this game's a whole lot more fun than the latest actual Contra game. if Konami knew or cared what was up with the genre and their legendary series they'd contact the makers of this game. (and to be totally fair what I played of the Contra game wasn't bad, not at all, it just "mur". mobile game Contra -- fun enough, but the feel was off and it had absolutely horrendous visuals.) other than laser-sharp gameplay mechanics, this game's got pretty unreal world and enemy design. machines that have been turned into monsters - a speeding subway's become a gory, living snake monster you have to first cross and then of course fight. I really liked the Xenobiologist boss. this is the kind of game with a demo so good I downloaded and beat it twice on seprate SteamFest promotions, now I've bought the full thing. nobody who's a fan of this kind of thing has good excuse to not at least try the demo. at least. (here's a tip to the younger folkz: if a game has a playable DEMO, it's because the people who made it are so confident they made a good game they'll let you play it for free because they believe you'll want to then BUY it. DEMOS = absolutely the most effetive sales practice in video games ... *if* they've made a great game, of course. end tip.) actually, one more thing TIP 2: this may just be profound personal preference, but ALSO do yourself a favor by trying out their *extremely generous* option for "Retro Music". not to say the default music's bad, not at all, I just think the retro music serves the game's style so much more. this is what we WANTED games to be like back in those days. anyway. IRON MEAT = favorite sidescroll shooter I've played since HUNTDOWN. and that's very high praise. not even rock-solid stuff like BLAZING CHROME came near that for me. let alone the new *actual* Contra game, which was also fair. so TRY DEMO. YOU GO NOW. DEMO. first get demo, then demolish spoopy robo-monsters. you really can't lose just trying it, right? (unless you yourself are a spoopy robo-monster, and if that's the case I think you might be either offended or turned on by this game.) Very Big YES for this one. I've only got 25 minutes in the actual game, I wanted to get this out there. maybe it'll help even just the smallest amount. game deserves it. it's sweet as hell.

A good Contra style game, but a little on the short end for the asking price. The Good * Good artwork * Over the top insane and funny enemies and levels. * Good overall pacing * Good veriety in enemies both artistically and gameplaywise. * Weapons feel different * The soundtrack fits the tone of the game. The Bad * There isn't that much game for the bucks. The contra collection is about the same pricetag * Levels are just long enough to become repetetive. * Unlocks are meh.

Good Contra Clone game, with tight controls, good music and good enemy design. The maps are good as well.
