This game feels like a love letter to old school text adventure games with an updated modern treatment. It feels akin to a few mountaineering board games out there. If you like chill relaxing games, if you like exploration and discovery, love climbing or mountaineering, are capable of suspending your disbelief a little, and know how to remap keybindings, then this game might be for you. If you’re only a modern gamer who expects out of the box perfection and doesn’t like to tinker or doesn’t like game mechanics that go beyond surface levels and maybe aren’t super obvious, maybe go watch someone play it on Twitch or YouTube first. Like many resource management and survival games, there is a little bit of a learning curve. Is it a little rough around the edges? Maybe, but as someone who’s gamed for 30+ years, there’s a certain charm that accompanies games like this that remind me of those quirky games from bygone years. Text adventure and exploration driven gameplay married with survival and resource management, makes for a unique and novel experience that I have yet to see especially for mountaineering. The biggest complaint: The camera was difficult to manage before I remapped the keybindings to better suit my steam deck/gamepad. That was 90% of the wonkiness though. Like any game, once orientated to the controls and gameplay loop, Everything was smooth sailing. Perhaps even on the easy side. However, as I progressed through the game, the difficulty level did improve. Careful planning is needed in order to navigate the terrain and achieve mission goals. I am def fan of these developers: I always check out their Pax East booth each year. They always seem to have some fun concept game going and I remember seeing this one a few years back. For a sale price of $4.99, there’s really not much to complain about. I’m 3 missions in at the time of initial review and will update if anything relevant comes up.

After a grueling series of consecutive summits, low on oxygen and supplies, injured, delirious and disorientated, I summit the last peak, knowing that I won't have the energy or tools needed to make the climb back down to base level. I hope for some kind of miracle to get me off this bloody rock, but no miracle comes, and, as the cut-scene starts, and the camera pans away, I know that my character died on that summit, cold and alone, just as the sun rises over the clouds below.

Good game. Very chill and relaxing. It's alot like a board game with how you move around and you have to manage 5 resources (sanity, oxygen, warmth, time and energy). The normal difficulty is very fair and you can afford to make mistakes, which is cool to see how certain events turn out, because you take more risks. Higher difficulties make the game more like a puzzle where you really have to calculate where and how you move next. And the time resource becomes much more important. There are 3 characters to play with, all at the same time, and they each play very differently. They come with their own skill trees which are very fun and not too complicated. But you can really see the effect right away and this in my opinion is what makes the game more enjoyable overall. Otherwise you would just climb one mountain and you've seen what the game has to over, but now every mountain comes with its own variations and challenges that you can overcome with how you build your climbers and what equipment you bring. Also different events happen that can be more rewarding and also more punishing. The balance of the equipment could've used some tweaking. You can't really take much with you until late in the game. I think maybe if the game overall across the board was a tad more difficult but the equipment costs a tad lower, just so you can bring more with you and feel more like an actual climber. Now you're, for example, bringing a tent, helmet and gloves along, but no boots, no climbing equipment, no rations. Or you take the rations, but gloves. I recommend this game for anyone who loves climbing or loves boardgames.

I enjoyed it. Something a bit different than mainstream. Like a turn based strategic rpg kind of but with mountain climbing focus. I got it on sale and in that light, if you can find it over 50% off or in a bundle (ex. today there is one on Fanatical 20Feb2024 for ~90% off). Buy it. 4/10 at full price, but at 75% or so off it is worth it.

I find it very inconvenient not to be able to look around. It would be too easy if you could see everything from the beginning, but you can't see anything during a snowstorm or at night, so it's okay to see a little more.
