Absolut wunderbar! This game reminds me a lot of Kingdom Come, but with much more relaxed tone (weird given it is a detective game). I absolutely loved that right from the start I could go mushroom picking into small detailed beautiful summer forest instead of solving the case :D I really wish these guys would create their next game similar to ours Kindgom Come game, they definitely know how to create one of the most (maybe even THE most) beautiful relaxing forest locations. The worst issue with this game is sadly the optimization, I am playing on RTX4080 and had to lower down lot of settings to get stable 60 FPS :D despite that, it still looks very nice. However please, for your next game spend more time optimizing it. Keep it up guys, you are now on my radar of good indie devs :)

Inspector Schmidt - A Bavarian Tale is a third-person detective game with RPG elements, set in the small Bavarian village of Wolpertshofen in 1866. You play as Valentin Schmidt, a journalist sent to the village to write an article about a recent murder. The atmosphere of the game is charming, and the village, while not overly large, is decently sized and filled with interesting villagers. However, the people are mistrusting and donā€™t want outsiders interfering, which makes gathering information more challenging. The game revolves around finding clues using a ā€œconcentrationā€ mode and gathering information through dialogues. You can earn XP and upgrade skills like Charisma, Acumen, Agility, and more, which can open different paths in conversations. There are often multiple ways to get the information you want. Thereā€™s also a crafting system, where you sometimes have to create items for quests or to help with skill checks. Using these skills in conversations requires a dice check. Depending on the difficulty, you need to roll a certain number (1-20) or higher to pass, and you must pass four checks. This system can get annoying, especially when you really want a piece of information but end up failing due to the random nature of the dice rolls. If you fail a check, you lose points in that particular skill, and once all the points are gone, you lose the check. Itā€™s frustrating when you really need something, and the only option is to live with the consequences or reload and try again. The decisions you make can change the ending of the game, which adds weight to your choices. However, some story elements mentioned by different characters donā€™t have any significant impact on the overall narrative, which felt weird and out of place. One of the things I found charming was the Bavarian dialect used by the villagers. I usually play games with English voices, but this time, I stuck with the original language, even though I only understood about 75% of it. The English voice acting, on the other hand, was over the top and stereotypical, with thick accents and incorrect pronunciation, which I absolutely hated. It felt like the usual bad portrayal of Germans in media. The gameā€™s performance could use some optimization. I experienced frequent FPS drops, especially in the forests. The environments are nicely detailed and have solid graphics overall, though the character models sometimes have weird proportions. The artwork and journal, however, are beautiful and useful. I found the sneaking mechanic to be a bit problematic. The game features a day-night cycle, and you're not allowed to roam the village after dark. The villagers patrol the streets, and if they see you, they attack. While hiding in bushes or behind houses can work, the AI is too sensitiveā€”villagers can spot you even from 50 meters away in pitch darkness. The music that plays when youā€™re spotted is hilarious, though. There were a few instances where the music started even though nobody was chasing me, and since you canā€™t save while in combat, reloading was my only option. Combat in the game is janky but rarely needed, and while characters sometimes get stuck in benches or float in the air, I didnā€™t encounter any game-breaking bugs. The game autosaves regularly, which is a relief. However, the dialogue system can be a bit confusing. Sometimes, you have to press a button to advance the conversation, while other times, the game gives a little pause before moving on its own. Itā€™s not always clear when it will auto-advance, so I accidentally skipped a few lines by pressing the button when the game had already decided to move forward. Despite its flaws, Inspector Schmidt - A Bavarian Tale is a charming game with a good atmosphere and an interesting enough story that I didnā€™t mind the negative points too much. It has a mix of comical moments and really dark themes, and while itā€™s clear that the game was made by a small studio, Iā€™m still excited about their next game, which is set in my home-region in northern Germany. The negative points mentioned in a few reviews (performance issues, graphics,...) are true but far outweighed by a lovingly designed pastoral murder mystery set in an authentically Bbavarian village. I can't vouch for the English dubbing, but the Bavarian version is surprisingly well-made considering this game's production value. I bought this game at roughly 4ā‚¬, but I would easily have payed double or even three times as much if I had known its charming qualities in advance.

An excellent, but flawed, narrative adventure. You are a city dweller sent to a small village to investigate a murder, but you end up getting way more involved with the inhabitants and really get absorbed in what is going on in their lives. Some light RPG mechanics with the dice rolls deciding how the story unfolds. Lots of choice and consequence. Another reviewer called it a "Bavarian Disco Elysium", and that might be the closest description I can agree with. The game is really well done overall and creates a believable atmosphere of what 19th century Bavaria would be like. My only real gripe is the English translation is a bit rough. What the voice actors are saying is oftentimes different than the text on the screen, and some of the text just isn't translated whatsoever. Hopefully the devs continue to work on that to make it a completely playable game in English. I can't wait to play the upcoming sequel, "The Ebbing - A Coastal Tale", and see how Active Fungus Studios continues to build on their unique brand of adventure games!
