Apparently its the only 2024 released game I played this year. But its still a cool tactical/strategy game, with fun concepts and lots of replayability

After 66 hours and closing all achievements I highly recommend this game. - Suffering medieval style as a chef's kiss - Interesting battles - Lots of interesting factions that help to go through the game in a varied way, creating interesting builds - Very atmospheric music - Though the tutorial is quite long, but it helped me to understand all the mechanics and work out my tactics I'm looking forward to the next project from Yaza Games ❤️

Very good turn-based tactics game. Would be super fucking amazing if not for two things. My main gripe with it is that it is incredibly slow-paced there are so many animations and camera pans and zooms for every event that take forever to finish and that you can't skip, really slows down the pace of the game. The tutorial would probably be a lot quicker too if it weren't for that. (I only did the basic tutorials to get a grip with the fundamentals, which is highly recommended since many mechanics are pretty unintuitive at first but they to make sense eventually.) And the second issue is that the whole game is set up as 1v1 game, but the only way to play against another human is local play (I guess Steam Remote Play should work, need to find someone to try it with). And the whole campaign is balanced (in traditional strategy game fashion) by the fact that the AI is pretty basic and higher difficulties are achieved by giving the AI just way more resources. Which works decently fine, and creates some interesting situations sometimes, but it's mostly about hoping that the AI won't randomly do the smart thing this time around and just crush you. Or it might just blow up its own units, you never know. Like there are whole game elements the AI just doesn't understand how to play around (like bell towers or snails), which makes me wish to play it against an actual opponent most of the time. The single-player campaign is serviceable though, the "boredom" system is neat and makes you try to not use more resources for a fight than you need (because using more units now will make later fights harder). But don't be surprised if it's tricky the first time around, because some of the units that would counter some opponents are locked at first and unlocking those by completing runs (win or lose) will help massively. Other than that there are some quality of life pet-peeves, like one can't de-select an action, so once you've clicked on an action you need to be careful you don't accidentally commit something when you just wanted to click around the battlefield. Most egregious example was: at the beginning of a turn (or chapter as it's called here) a unit is pre-selected, but I wanted to select a different one, so I click on my other unit, but since the initial unit didn't have any free spaces in its range, instead of selecting the move action (which would just switch to another unit if you click on it) it pre-selected the attack action. And before I realized it, instead of selecting my other unit, I attacked it ... Having said all this: I complain so much, because I really really really like this game, it's got cool and fresh ideas, pushing units around as a core mechanic is fun and funny. Just wish it wasn't so sluggish and I could convince somebody to play a round against me.

Inkulinati is a roguelite combat-based game. You play as a Medieval scribe who draws beasts to battle enemies on a battlefield of parchment. The game has layers of strategy; you could draw a beast to help with winning the current battle, but doing so will increase the cost of drawing that beast in future battles. To become an Inkulinati Master, you will have to use a range of beasts and talents (similar to perks). You will also have to carefully manage and trade various resources throughout the game, such as ink, gold, health and prestige. Yaza Games had an excellent and original idea of setting a game in the pages of a Medieval manuscript. The charming, colourful drawings suit the game’s cartoonish humour. The soundtrack evokes tension and excitement as the player battles enemy Inkulinatis and races to finish a fight before bonfires consume their beasts. Gameplay is reasonably varied. The ability to unlock additional content provides incentive to replay journey mode. My main criticism of the game is that the duel mode feels underdeveloped. Players choose from somewhat limited options for their beasts, hand actions and talents. Hence, the story-based 'journey mode' is the main draw for this game. Inkulinati is very good overall. I recommend it to fans of roguelite games and turn-based combat.
