This was the first game I bought on Steam, and not once did I ever regret playing. If you love speculative ecology & exploration mixed with storytelling that can really make you think, this is an excellent game for you. I first found out about this game in a video from Curious Archive, a channel that discusses speculative evolution projects as well as discussing interesting tropes in media. The description & clips shown of this game caught my attention, so when I finally made my own Steam account, this was among the first games I bought. As I was exploring the environment of the water world, I found myself exploring every little nook and cranny I could find, trying to discover everything, wondering what new lifeforms were hiding around each corner, just waiting to be discovered. Simultaneously, I found myself wholeheartedly invested in the story. Without spoiling too much, I will say that some aspects of the story left me with a few questions by the end, but in this case, I feel it works in the game's favor. I want to know more about this incredible planet! I want to see what other forms of life have appeared, how big they can get, how they adapted to challenges both native and foreign! Don't be deceived by the simple-seeming appearance of the graphics or gameplay. While it may seem bland at a glance, once you start playing, you realize there is so much more to In Other Waters that, in my opinion, makes it worth every cent!

A beautiful meditation on the wonder of the world around us and the importance of keeping it alive. While this game, with its text-heavy exploration, abstract art style and not particularly exciting moment to moment gameplay might not be for everyone, If you are looking for a serene contemplative experience that lets your mind's eye wander, it might very much be for you. The way I unearthed the layers of this alien ecosystem, specie by specie, description by description, each one more evocative than the last and revealing new aspects of the subject for me to imagine, just gripped me in its own unique way. A kind of zen sci-fi, fiction just for its own sake. In other words I went on a walk after I finished it and saw a pretty blue bird. Instead of just smiling and walking past I took a picture of it and managed to find the specie to read up more on it. Call me Minae

This game isn't for everyone but it's for me :) I would recommend if you: - like to read creature description in your game - like exploring every nook and cranny of the map - enjoy a slow pace game - don't mind game being short - don't have a problem with dialogue heavy/visual novel games I would not recommend it for someone who: - don't like shorter game - don't like reading - don't like turn base/ game without action - can't function without in game mini map - don't like same sex romance in the narrative (even implied) Other than that I genuinely thought this is a very well made game. The only complain I have is the ending which feel a bit rush, but it did not detract from the overall experience.

I think In Other Waters is the perfect example of when someone has a really cool idea for a game, genuinely seems to sink a LOT of time into making it, the world around it, the aesthetics... Only for that game to run head first into the giant brick wall of "This is an interesting gameplay mechanic, but it's incredibly tedious." And maybe that's part of the point, but it does make it hard to recommend. The "Gameplay" isn't there in the sense most might like, but I found myself immersed in it nonetheless. While the narrative is interesting, I think it gets a bit 'loose' towards the end, unsatisfying maybe? Finishes too quickly? And I personally believe that's just a product of how the game plays. I think the people/person who made this game realised that this kind of gameplay can only go on for so long before you get tired of it, and so wraps it up when they do. That's not to say the story is incomplete, it isn't, but I just wish I got another hour out of it, for things to simmer a little more in the mystery. So with that out of the way, lets get to rambling! Genuinely, I think what the developer(s) had going on here is a FANTASTIC base for a game. There's something so unique about having the player see and interact with the world in a limited way, while having their view INTO the world you inhabit seen through different eyes. You're an AI in a suit. You don't... see things the same way the person wearing the suit. You see lines, dots, triangles, topography maps, lifesupport meters, all the utilitarian stuff. You are someone's body, their eyes, in your own way. Just like they are yours, in their own way. I love Ellery's view into the world. It's great. The best part of this game is going out of your way to scan things, collect samples, and try to understand the world the best you can while using Ellery's research notes and sketches into a really well thought out and interesting alien world. ACtual thought went into the roles of how creatures all take part in their own ecosystems, even if just in a narrative sense, and I think some games that want to emulate alien ecosystems could do with taking a page from this game's book and putting a lot more thought into how their fauna and flora interact. It's... a chill game. There isn't much to it other than clicking, dragging, clicking, dragging, and the very rare resource management and puzzle solving. It is, mostly, a narrative experience, with nice art, an interesting gmimick, and *really* cozy music. I want another game like this, in a similar style. Oh, to be the AI, unsure of why it exists, but just... simply is, seeing the world through a different lens that a person does. Pick it up if you feel like doing a LOT of reading. And you're okay with... a lot of clicking and dragging and clicking and dragging and waiting and clicking being the vehicle for a fairly short, if not decent story with some good vibes. Sometimes, I'll switch my view to the bottom deck, sonar, wait for Ellery to walk into the observation room and sit there, watching spores and alien life flitter past on the sonar. My eyes, the sonar, is different to her eyes... but yet, I share this quiet, ponderous moment with her. Staring aimless into an alien sea, through different lenses. I think that's why I like this game so much, I find I get this kind of nerd shit out of games a lot nowadays.
