Looking for most realistic WW2 dog fight? This flight sim is one of the best and will not disappoint you. Set all the parameters to max realism and enjoy the experience. Build your own scripted campaign. It will take some time to develop your skills but the satisfaction is definitely worth the investment.

I just got the game (at a major discount, it was only 10 euros for this and the Africa DLC). I already played IL2 GB Bodenplatte and Moscow so I can compare this to the GB series. I use TRack IR5 and a VKB Gladiator NXT and of course the keyboard. To be honest I was put off at first by the UI too, but after fiddiling with it for 15 minutes I think its actually okay and seems to get the job done. The UI and the Mixed reviews are what put me off from buying it innitially, but many of the negetive reviews are people complaining that they cant get their joystick bound or that they cant play because they have no joystick. Some Other negative reviews are quite old and I think the Issues that they are addressing have already been patched. But many of the reviews probably have merit. I obviously didnt listen to them as the game was cheap enough for me to wager it. just to be clear YOU NEED A JOYSTICK TO PLAY THIS and I SUGGEST A HEADTRACKER SUCH AS TRACK IR OR OPENTRACK I did not enocounter Issues with binding the axis and buttons, the Joystick configuration wizzard (a seperate program in the Installation files) is much more easier to use than the ingame controll settings page. When I started the game there was a populated server and I joined and Introduced myself. A few minutes later I joined "the air tactical assaultgroup" and two nice chaps helped me to start my plane and to take of. In the under two hours I played this game I managed to fly a hurricane through a hangar and had a lot of fun. It seems like this game was made by 1C was released in a sorry state and then was picked up by a Team of community modders who develop and sell it. Thats really comendable. From what I experienced the Flight Model feels more introcate than the ones from the IL2 GB series and almost as good as the DCS ones do. The Graphics are decent. It looks like War Thunder did in 2015. It is runnning much better than IL2 GB does on my GTX1070 in 4k and does NOT require 64 GBs of ram like DCS does. The sounds also are much better than in IL2 GB in my opinion. I did not experience any negative things except that the bullets may look a little bit fake and you cant drive around all over the map in your plane. For some reason It doesnt even feel as clunky as IL2 GB does, although I expected it to be even worse. I think this game has its flaws, but also excells at other parts. So ask yourself. Do you want to fly in Nort Africa? then get this game and the dlc. Do you want ww2 combat but have a PC thats nearing almost 6 years old? then get this game. You want clickable Cockpits but feel DCS is lacking in your favourite Plane? then get this game. You feel like the IL2 GB series has a flight model thats unnrealistic? then get this game. You dont like how 1C is treating former employees and exploiting its customers? then get this game. You want to Torpedo a ship in a bomber? get this game then! You want to use Teamspeak/discord and join some sort of Group? then get this game and join a Group, they often also You want to hop on a Multiplayer server 24/7 and expect it to be full? then get War Thunder even IL2GB doesnt have that. You want smart AI to fight with and against? I Honestly dont know hw the AI is here, butt I assume its not the greatest, only DCS AI is the best out there and its lacking. You want the best textured Cockpits? Go with IL2 GB then, they look stunning. I think I am going to move on from the GB series to this, I spent more money than I want to admit on GB and while GB has many positives on its side, but the fact that this runs so smooth on my seven year old PC and has so many unique planes I have never flown before are enough.

A revamped, old-school game that is the best for what it is: the best as has been made true to life sim for ww2 air combat in the battle of britain. One will need to know more about controllers, modification of keyboard and controller layouts, about the planes themselves and be an aero/ww2 geek on top of all of the rest. I've seen some complaints from the warthunder crowd... Yah, this is a true to life sim: you'll have to manage things just like they did in the day! and it's all there: every aspect of the aircraft is available to you- you'll just have to painstakingly program them into your x52 etc. The real issue is that the hay-day for this iteration is over. Single player campaigns are about all you'll get- which are wanky. There are as of writing this... 4-5 servers left for online play and maybe 1-7 players. You'll have to get the Tobruk expansion to access the most active server. For anyone who put time into this, for instance, with ATAG, about 4-6 years ago then you know what an amazing experience it was! Flying for 4-6 hours in a bomber formation to target and back; attacked by some of the best sim pilots in the world; the dogfights... amazing!

Since I got this on sale for next to nothing, I would recommend it. Otherwise, buy with caution. Getting in to the game things feel a bit lazy, the UI looks like something out of a unity game, and the music is terrible compared to the original IL-2 Sturmovik. The actual gameplay is pretty much identical to the original with some improvements. It's clear this was intended as a new campaign for players of the original game, plus an upgrade to the visuals. To be honest, everything looks great and runs smoothly. The audio on the other hand is pretty poor and stuttery. Even though I am a civil flight simmer, I was quite dissapointed since I was expecting something a bit more user friendly, maybe something even a bit more aimed at console players. Nothing about the game is intuitive whatsoever. Setting up the controls is fairly confusing, and all the tutorials in the game are terrible - this was intimidating for me getting started. Personally I really had to delve into FAQ's and YouTube videos to get to grips with things. Basically if you are a flight simmer and don't mind having to spend the time to work things out then this is definitely worth a look, but this is not for casual gamers.
