If you like Baldurs Gate 3, check out this blast from the past. One of BG3s predecessors, and a real fun ride. Plus you can create all of your party members, and none of them try to touch your no no spot.

Playing Icewind Dale during the winter as my window frosted with ice is the coziest DND experience of all time. A proper Infinity Engine dungeon crawler with a fully customizable party, divine music & ethereal atmosphere. There's an indistinct aura that makes it magically great. IWD definitely has the best character portraits, each singing a world unto themselves. EE introduces new classes, new spells from BG2, dual wielding, an enhanced loot window & quality of life improvements. Even after 10 years I still come back to this game. If you enjoy traditional fantasy RPGs, you should play Icewind Dale. Understandably a forgotten genre, fortunately preserved by its genuine intent. Literal lightning & ice in a bottle.

Don't let my time played on this game fool you, I started playing Icewind Dale when it was first released. Icewind Dale is a one of the great classics of the CRPG genre. It is a lot more combat and adventure focused than the role playing narrative of Baldur's Gate 1 and 2. The player gets to create the entire party to their preferences which makes for a lot of customization. The story is very linear compared to Baldur's Gate 1 & 2 but that's pretty normal for most CRPGs. I strongly recommend Icewind Dale and Icewind Dale 2 (the latter is not on Steam but on GOG) to any fans of the CRPG genre.

An absolute artwork of a game. This is not your wonderous, pretty, frolic through a fantasy world for fame and riches. There is not a flowery meadow or lively city to be found. This is a dark, harsh, and unforgiving slog through treacherous terrains and overwhelming foes. A much more combat focused iteration of the marvelous Baldurs Gate series. Icewind Dale skips much of the text walls its sister game will throw at you between combat. It instead has you fighting your way through wave after wave of Orcs, Yeti, Undead, Trolls, Lizard Men, Giants and much more. It only occasionally breaks up combat with traps, arming yourself for combat, looting defeated enemies, resting from combat, more combat, and the occasional story time from the droning Arundel. The gameplay is satisfying, the world is entrancing, the sparse NPC's are riveting, and the soundtrack is banging. Please do yourself the favour of crossing the spine of the world into the frozen north and experiencing one of the better games ever made.

I have owned Icewind Dale on GOG but had barely played it for many years before I decided to revisit the Infinity Engine games in their Enhanced Editions recently. I played this game after having finished Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition and half of Baldur's Gate 2: Enhanced Edition. When I started those games, I was terrible at the combat. I played through this game on my tablet at first, and I was still bad, but a bit better. This latest playthrough on the PC, however, went much better. I now love the combat, though I'm no expert, and was able to finish the game without lowering the difficulty. Icewind Dale: Enhanced Edition is the combat-focused counterpart to BG:EE. The story is linear and straightforward, but not without its twists and interconnections. Paying attention to the narrative and environment may not have as much payoff as other entries, but there are still optional, unmarked "quests" for the thorough. If you are coming to this game to experience the Infinity Engine games for the first time, I don't recommend starting here. The game expects familiarity with the combat and starts with group encounters. Most of the game is dungeon-diving--exploring 4+ screen dungeons with many encounters and way more loot than you can carry. For me, I enjoyed this pacing. Every new dungeon felt like a puzzle to tease and solve. The combat is slow and deliberate--preparation, placement, and resources matter. If you run out of arrows 3 levels in, you need a backup plan or a hike back to town. The story, as a I said is clear and straightforward. Even so, it suggests a deeper tale. I have not read any of the Forgotten Realms novels, but this game is the one that has sparked my interest in them (specifically the Drizzt and Icewind Dale sagas.) There is history in Icewind Dale that is only superficially explained in exposition. However, the direct plot points and the exploration of their relevant dungeons hint at other, perhaps, more interesting stories. Just the fact that anyone can survive in this hostile snowfield (or that anyone would want to) suggests a tale worth hearing. Playing through Icewind Dale has lead me to an obsession over the Infinity Engine. Having played Neverwinter Nights' official expansions, it leaves me with a longing for a modular community engine like Neverwinter Nights, but for the Infinity Engine. I am currently playing Icewind Dale 2's community-made "Enhanced Edition". So far, it's a weird amalgam of Neverwinter Nights' 3rd Edition ruleset and Icewind Dale's endless combat. In summary, if you enjoyed the combat of Baldur's Gate you will likely enjoy this game. The party is created from preset or from scratch, so there are no backstories or banter to distract from getting the task at hand done. Conversely, there are few interweaving narratives to provide a distraction from the challenge. If you enjoy dungeon diving and environmental storytelling in modern RPGs and are willing to take a more strategic pace, you may also enjoy this title.
