I, Zombie is an inventive indie strategy game that takes a familiar horror concept and turns it on its head. Developed and published by Awesome Games Studio, the game places players in control of the outbreak rather than the survivors. Instead of defending humanity from the undead, your goal is to spread the infection, build a growing zombie army, and overwhelm heavily guarded locations. This simple reversal of perspective gives the game a unique identity and immediately separates it from countless other zombie-themed titles. The gameplay revolves around a blend of stealth, tactics, and horde management. Players begin most missions as a lone zombie and must carefully navigate environments filled with civilians, soldiers, and defensive structures. Every infected human becomes a new member of the horde, creating a satisfying sense of progression as a single zombie transforms into a dangerous swarm. Success depends on patience and planning, since rushing directly into armed defenses usually leads to failure. The challenge comes from identifying the best targets, avoiding enemy fire, and steadily expanding the infection until the entire area falls under your control. One of the game's most enjoyable aspects is the level design. Each stage presents a different puzzle that requires players to think strategically rather than simply relying on numbers. Guard patrols, security positions, and environmental obstacles create situations where timing and positioning are crucial. As the campaign progresses, the missions become increasingly complex, encouraging experimentation with different approaches. The game rewards careful observation, making victories feel earned rather than accidental. The command system is intentionally straightforward but effective. Players can direct zombies to follow, hold position, or attack specific targets, allowing for a surprising amount of tactical flexibility. While the controls are easy to learn, mastering the management of a large horde becomes an important skill later in the game. Watching a carefully planned infection spread across a map and turn enemy defenses into chaos is one of the most satisfying parts of the experience. Another notable feature is the built-in level editor, which adds considerable value beyond the main campaign. Players can design their own scenarios and experiment with custom layouts, helping extend the game's longevity. For an independent title of this scale, the inclusion of user-generated content tools demonstrates a commitment to replayability and creative freedom. Visually, I, Zombie favors clarity over complexity. The top-down presentation ensures that important gameplay information remains easy to read, allowing players to focus on strategy rather than visual distractions. Character models and environments are relatively simple, but they effectively serve the needs of the gameplay. The sound design complements the action with suitable effects and atmosphere, helping maintain immersion without overshadowing the tactical elements. The game is not without flaws. While the core mechanics are entertaining, they can become somewhat repetitive during longer play sessions. The fundamental objective of infecting humans remains consistent throughout the campaign, and some players may wish for a greater variety of zombie abilities, mission objectives, or enemy types. Nevertheless, the game's steady introduction of new challenges helps keep the experience engaging for most of its duration. What makes I, Zombie memorable is its commitment to a clever idea and its successful execution of that concept. By allowing players to become the threat instead of the victim, the game creates a refreshing and entertaining take on the zombie genre. Its combination of strategy, stealth, and puzzle-solving delivers a gameplay experience that feels distinct, rewarding, and surprisingly addictive. Although it may not possess the depth or production values of larger strategy titles, it excels at delivering focused, enjoyable gameplay built around a unique premise. Rating: 7/10

A cute little game. The concept is cool, playing as zombies instead of humans. Reminds me of Hotline Miami but with a twist. Looks like the game has been updated at some point, because I didn't have any of the issues mentioned in older reviews, and more levels have been added. Steam Workshop support is always a plus. Personally I didn't finish the game, about two thirds of the way in the levels got too difficult for me, or maybe just require more patience than I have. But still worth checking out. If any of the devs is reading this, please consider adding support for 21:9 resolutions.
