Sept. 2024

Honestly more of a tech demo than a game, but it's expansive enough to be interesting for its relatively short duration. Largely it seems to exist just to ask the question "How many interesting gameplay possibilities would a hyperbolic world open up?" to which the answer seems to be a resounding "not that many, actually". One of the sub-worlds isn't even hyperbolic, but spherical. Never the less, I had a good enough time with it and didn't feel that it overstayed its welcome, but I also didn't bother with the "true ending".

I watched CodeParade's YouTube devlog for this game as it came out. I remember thinking "wow, what a neat little concept, can't wait to see how it turns out." Fast forward a couple months, I try the game out and... wow. It's much, much better than I was expecting. The puzzles are great, the hyperbolic mapping is so seamless, it's just... amazing. Definitely one of the most innovative games I've seen in a long time.

Hyperbolica is an adventure game who puzzles serve as a pretense to encourage the player to explore its uniquely non-Euclidean game world. The puzzles are generally quite basic, with the difficulty coming from navigating a world where 3D space works very differently than what we're usually used to. One never gets quite used to it, but the effect is extremely interesting all the same, and at two hours in length, it doesn't overstay its welcome.

for its cheap price, it is technically impressive and worth checking out especially if you're into 3D design or gamedev. for non-designers, you will probably find it difficult to stay motivated and play more than an hour.

This is a really unique and interesting game. I only wanted to play it for the mind bending non-Euclidean environments, which there is a good amount of. However I feel this wild idea has been lost in the game, and a far greater potential could have been achieved if the age bracket of the game was for adults. This mind bending space, coupled with sci-horror elements and action, would be a perfect combo to create a terrifying game that would truly leave the player disturbed. Maybe a followup game will come one day.
