HYPER DEMON is the only perfect game I have ever played. If the developer asked me for one piece of feedback- an addition, removal, or otherwise- I would have nothing to say. There is nothing about this game I do not like, and there is nothing I think would make it better. It reminds me of Tetris in that every mechanic has great impact on the rest of the game, so there's no real definition of a "correct" move. In other words, every decision you make in a run will occlude other possible decisions. TL;DR: good

One of the things that I think computer games accomplish unique to any other form of creative media is its means of "infusing" a language of interactivity into a visual scene. Super Mario Bros uses our intuition of motion and gravity to allow us to see basic geometric objects as platforms to run and jump across. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater replicates the phenomenological experience of the skateboarding scene by transforming an outdoor environment into a makeshift skate park that players can trick across. What this sets out to do is to essentially transform the way the player looks at a given game scene, to pass down a sort of "game sense" into the player, allowing them to take an otherwise mundane scene and experience it in a more kinesthetically driven way. THPS, like mentioned above, teaches the player to see normal objects like handrails and power lines as grindable objects, and to see those objects as set pieces in a yet larger trick line. The noun becomes a verb, so to speak. So what makes HYPER DEMON so monumental is its means of accomplishing this same feat, but on a visual scene that is completely foreign to the player's world. HYPER DEMON is awash in cascading kaleidoscopes of color, prismatic beams of light that blur around the player's vision. And the amazing thing is...it all makes sense. It works. Nearly every weird visual and auditory artifact in the game that seems only to disorient the player is, in fact, guiding the player in some way. That strange red afterglow of enemies that flashes on screen? It's meant to show the player that an enemy is approaching them from behind. That bassy low pass filter in the audio that seems intent on mimicking the player's adrenaline? It activates when the player is leaving the playable game arena. In other words, HYPER DEMON's high profile avant-garde aesthetic actually earns its right to be experimental, on the count that it's so seamlessly fused with the game's core arena shooter mechanics. The disorienting has become orienting. The result is utterly electrifying. Playing this game today is what I imagine kids back in the 70s and 80s felt like playing the early arcade games for the first time, that wide-eyed glimpse into a strange new world, a strange new language hidden beneath the glareglow of the cabinet screen; a language we learn not by being taught, but by the simple act of speaking it.

Short Version: This is meditation in 2024. Worth. Long version: There is a "flow state", a "zone", an auto-hypnotic biological behavior human brains do when confronted with too much vital information to process at once. Before you get there, you're processing colors, sounds, peripheral and tunnel vision independently. You're calculating jumps and patterns and behavioral responses. You're fiddling with the FOV slider, and adjusting your DPI like this is going to be another FPS title to surmount in the normal ways. When this fails, many of you will simply give up. You won't allow your brains to adapt to the information and patterns. You won't open the gates to the zone, you won't dive into the flow. For many of you, this is just a quick "what's all the noise about, these reviews are funny" that you'll get sick of. For those who make it a single step further, this is not a "leisure time shoot-em-up" or a Doom/Quake/Mover-Shooter title. This is an auto-hypnosis induction tool that permits nearly autonomic gameplay -- you will reach a point where you no longer have to think in terms of "winning", or "losing", or "scoring". HYPER DEMON is not a game you play with your senses and devices -- ~*This Is A Game Where You Play With Your Own Mind*~ For the folks in 2024 and beyond, digital archaeologists in the 3000's, very few of us knew what we had, here. Few of us understood that we could use this game's interactions with our very sentient selves in order to promote an internal peace of mind, a Zen of hypnogogic immersion between realities where our organic extremities continued to operate while dissociated from our deepest inner selves. This game is nothing less than a supreme tool for shifting between conscious and unconscious mind states, allowing the tools you've grown to take control so your mind can holistically embrace existence. Many have scoffed at this implication of depth in a simple speed shooter, but for those who sojourn beyond the boundaries of our expectations and limitations -- HYPER DEMON is the bridge between the outer and inner self.

HYPER DEMON is transcendent. immersive in a way no other game could pretend to be, it demands that you give your mind to it so completely to keep up with the orgy of horrific psychedelia that you simply fall into the screen; nothing else exists except for you, the demons, the darkness, the screaming of your daggers effervescent against the gold-chrome liquid-metal super-reflective every-skull around you, and the jesus beam railgun you blast it all away with. HYPER DEMON is like Devil Daggers took the Terrance McKenna challenge. HYPER DEMON is what gazes back from the void. HYPER DEMON is a lucid nightmare you have while you're awake. Sorath have demonstrated an unreal mastery over the medium. Devil Daggers was something unreal in it's own right, and to follow it at all seemed sort of impossible, but the direction taken here is itself impossible to do justice with words. Devil Daggers made you feel like you were undertaking some Sisyphean feat of torturous endurance that was literally impossible to escape, like you were trapped in hell forever and fighting for freedom that would never find you. it felt, and still feels, oppressive. even at your strongest, you simply can't keep up anymore after a certain point. HYPER DEMON instead gives you the power to see through the veil and destroy everything that stands in your way; YOU are the HYPER DEMON, YOU will rip God out of his heaven and destroy him and the birds will sing for you when you do it if only you can find the strength. just play it already

Although I immediately refunded this game, I still recommend it. This is the craziest piece of software I have ever installed. It's a step towards transcendence. There is nothing linear here. Can you handle a 360 degree field of view in the middle of the ethereal plane? Unfortunately I could not, for I am just one man with one mind.
