My favorite part of the game isn't the gunplay, it isn't the maps, and it isn't the character designs. It's checking profiles after matches and seeing most accounts have accusations of hacking, abusing ping, and or vac bans on record.

The greatest 1st person shooter experience tied up in the worse user interface devised by human kind, the game will be good eventually when they fix the UI. also when they remove the shitty 800ms trade window.

The game itself is great, the new engine update makes it look a lot better than before, it has removed all the jaggy outlines on a lot of objects/models and for the most part performance seems to be the same or better with DLSS. The UI is absolutely terrible though, they need to fix it, it's a complete step backwards from a UI that was already a bit awkward to use. Giving it a positive review, just fix the UI, there's no point reviewbombing the game because of the poor UI when the gameplay is great.

What masquerades itself as a shooter is actually a mental game of chess where you can only hear the pieces. This cowboy-from-hell-ass game has sucked up 200 hours of my life so far and I have only just begun to scratch the surface of the ridiculous intricacies that these fights involve. dope game.

I think after ~1000hrs of play I should write a few words about this game. I'm over 40 and honestly I never thought I'd be playing an FPS game with a competitive element in it ever again. I thought I don't have the patience for this and wouldn't get any fun out of being pushed around by people who are way better at clicking heads than me. I was both right and wrong on this... Strategic gameplay The most surprising thing for me was that this game is as much about strategy as it is about shooting. I'd even go so far as to say that movement, knowing when to be stealthy, when to be fast, where to go to gain an environment advantage and when to take fights and when to run win you more encounters than straight up shooting. This is in part because the game is mostly played at close to mid range and sound plays a crucial role in decision making. Everything you do makes noise, running vs walking vs crounching make different amount of noise, the kind of terrain you're going over also makes different sounds - metal, wood, concrete, soil etc. Opening doors, climbing ladders, reloading your gun, using tools etc. On top of that the environment is littered with sound traps and ai that also makes noise when you engage with it: dying animals makin noise or birds taking off when you go near them, ai enemies making noises. And of course shooting your guns or making melee attacks - everything can be heard by other players depending on how close they are to you. This means people can know where you are without even seeing you and smarter players will use this to their advantage, either by making an ambush for your loud ass or simply using that information in combat to attack you with an advantage. There are ways to deal with sound traps without triggering them (crouch-walking makes minimal sound for example), and weapons that make little to no noise, but they are usially short range and or have other disadvantages (like drop-off for crossbow bolts etc), there are even decoys and fake dynamite sticks to throw people off your trail. Did I mention you can place ground traps other people (including yourself - don't ask me how I know) can walk into and take damage? Steep learning curve All of the above makes Hunt a vey hard game to get into. With 3 maps spanning over a dozen locations each it's a lot to take in for a new player. To play this game effectively you litterally need to learn these so well that you can instictively navigate them during intense battles. You need to know where the entrances are, where the soundtraps are, where the angles are etc. Learning to spot tools (like medkits) in the environments etc. The other half is learning how to use that information and making smart plays instead of peeking out of the same window twice to catch a bullet between your eybrows. Also about developing proper habits to take in your surroindings and maybe not make more noise than necessary, or even simply knowing what information you may be giving your opponnent by moving. It really helps to have friends with enough patience (which I'm lucky to have, thanks guys <3) to help you along and teach the important lessons about the game. Considering a single game usually lasting around 30 minutes, it is going to take a long time before you get comfortable enough to know what's what. Hell, you'll be getting killed from angles you didn't know about hundreds of hours in (I'm still finding out about some of the less often used ones!) You can revive your teammates Which is such a cool mechanic because if you die, you are not necessarily relegated to spectator mode for the rest of the match. Your teammates can pick you up to 4 times, tho you will have less max hp each time. They either need to get on top of your body or have a skill that allows them to do that from a short distance. There is of course counterplay to that in the form of leaving traps on the the dead players corpse or burning it down (then you can only be picked up by teammates who have the bounty token and they have to sacrifice their own max hp). Players can also put out the flame. This adds a cool dynamic to team fights and also a way to pressure your opponent. Mature, serious themes This is another thing that makes Hunt great is the overall mature theme of the game. There aren't any colorful or joke skins, emotes to meme on your oponent etc. Everything in the game is thematically appropriate to its setting and that really sets a great mature tone for the game, gives it that gritty realism (even tho you're mowing down lovecraftian enemies) Balanced It's also worth mentioning that the devs keep the game pretty well balanced. While there are 'meta' loudouts and a few guns that are pretty much better than anything else there is a lot of room to play whatever you want. Disregarding a few weapons most stuff is actually playable and has enough identity that might make it more preferable for you. A headshot from any weapon can kill. There are also some loadouts that offer different playstyle that can take people off-guard. Things that are a bit more spicy than simply shooting bullets at people. Bow and crossbows are a thing and have some very unique ammo types for a more stealthy type of play, there are melee weapons and a melee harpoon type weapon. What I'm trying to say that taking 'better' weapons doesn't mean you have an advantage over other players. Events! There are often long-lasting events that make changes to the gameplay, spicing it up by having new objectives, new abilities for your hunters or even new map weather effects. These usually alter the gameplay in a significant enough way that makes it interesting and new and have only been getting better and better since I started playing. This is a huge part of why I can't get enough of the game even after this many hours. Nitpicks There are a few nitpicks I should mention: 1) There can be some voodoo required to make the game behave. I've personally had the game stutter occasionally during fights (even with good ~120 fps) which went away after tuning some gfx settings. A friend had the game randomly crash which turned out to be a hardware issue. It can be tricky to figure out since the game has some quirks and there aren't really any tried solutions in the community forums. 2) There are also some minor weird bugs happening now and again, usually not affecting gameplay too much, but not always. Luckily the more annoying ones happen very rarely. 3) The game is not patched often, and the devs seem to have a policy of waiting for an event to end before acting. This can be irritating when there's an agreement in the community that there is a balance problem, which can (and has) lead to times where some trait or ammo type or playstyle is noticably better than others, or has little counterplay other than straight up beating them in a fight. This tends to make the game a bit stale for a while since majority of players will be playing the same thing until it is changed or the event ends. 4) On the patch thing, the devs tend to come down with the nerf-hammer hard at times, addressing things that the community complains about to a degree that they become pretty much unplayable. None of these make the game any less fun for me, but it's something that I hope gets better in future :)
