March 2025
As a player with 4.3k hours in Project Zomboid I heard MANY times that this game was going to be the "Project Zomboid Killer" during its release, and back to 2023 my thoughts were: "If this game is meant to be a PZ Copy, its destinty is failure", so I didn't pay much attention to it other than what I saw during streams (I didn't like what I see during that time to be honest). Now it is 2025, and somebody recommended it again a couple days ago, so this time I gave it a try so let's deep dive into my impressions. First of all, I'm really glad that HumanitZ evolved into its own personality and is definitely NOT A COPY of Project Zomboid (while it has similar things of course, it is a Survival game with Zombies). If you play this game thinking this is a 3D Project Zomboid made in Unreal you are going to definitely be frustrated as it doesn't offer the same but more "beauty". Some of the most noticable differences with PZ: - Special zombies/Infected. While most of the zombies are the traditional slow romero-like zombies, some of them are different, from runners to some toxic ones, and some of them that on death something happens (I died because of this, I don't want to spoil, discover it yourself). In my opinion I would compare the Zombies with 7 Days to Die but COMPLETELY more blended into the game, they fit much better to the whole atmosphere. - Zombie animals: not much more to say about this, PZ doesn't have them and will never have them. - Bandits NPC and other NPC's such as traders with Quests. Until B43 in PZ we won't see this kind of things. - A more focused Gunplay experience. The bad things Probably one of the most important points to make here is that none of this "bad" points are actually BAD things that destroys the experience, those are just things that can be improved IMO or are current bugs. - The camera: so my biggest problem was with the camera, mainly in big buildings or around cities. Around cities the problem is that as the walls doesn't dissappear whenever you are close to a tall building, you can barely see what's going on. Inside big buildings what happens is that the camera tilt effect allows you to see your character all good BUT you can barely see anything that's not close to you. I have seen some videos, even here in Steam and I see that the camera inside buildings changes its angle as you move so maybe it was just a bug in the current build? However some things I would like to see and that think would make it MUCH better: walls that are between the character AND the camera position, dissappear (as the Trees already do), this is basically the same behavior that any modern game have with the cutaways. Another thing would be that being close to a window should allow you to see a little bit more of the inside. - Bandits: while the bandit gunplay was funny, after you fight with them a couple times you find it easy to kill them, as they prefer to leave their barricades and cover to follow you, so you can simply hide behind a cover, and prefire them when they are close. It would be awesome that bandits would move from their coverage if they have another coverage close to where they currently are and would prefer to stay in their defensive positions rather than just follow you. - Zombie memory: I have seen that the zombies follow you just a little, if you manage to run, even if they are close to you and still seeing you, the prefer to just go back to their place. They should follow you unless you lose them. - Placing objects: placing objects outside a building is awful as the character model blocks your vision. Maybe the camera could tilt as it does in an interior when you are placing OR just be placed to the side of the character so you have vision to where you are placing the object. - FPS: With a Ryzen 7 7700, GTX 4060 TI 12GB and 32GB ram I had 40 FPS in the middle of a city, everywhere else I had 120. Edit: Looks like the FPS drops only occurs in big cities when there are also NPC's. - Mods: I REALLY REALLY hope that this game gets mod support soon, every game in modern times is capable of living for years when mods are supported, I really hope the same future for this game. The good - Zombie variation feels well blended into the game. - Friendly, Traders and Bandits NPC's in the world. - Animals! I have seen a good variation of animals and still I'm pretty sure that I missed couple more. - Companion dog! - While not many, vehicles are really nice. - Both gunplay and melee combat feels good. - Environment, it feels awesome! - Construction, well integrated. - Crafting, while limited, has enough crafting to be an important mechanic, not as many games that just adds a couple of crafts to say that they have "crafting". - Sneaking: it works. That's it, most of the games have a horrible sneaking gameplay. - Active developers, I'm really happy of all the love this game is getting from the dev team. - Survival mechanics such as: purify water, fish, farm, trap animals, hunt, etc while they are still simple, they are good enough to feel that they add value and are not just useless things. Basically, my opinion is that this game is worth a try, and if it keeps improving as it is right now, the future is really good. If you like PZ and 7DTD you'll like this one.

A solid game with much potential. I consider myself an expert of sorts on the zombie survival game, and this one is already pretty good. A solid cross between State of Decay and PZ. There are some DEFINITE issues, and I have some notes. But so long as the devs are willing and eager to continue to develop this game, I'd say it's on the right track. Some things I'd like to see changed, if possible. 1.When moving firearms from the hotbar to the backpack, they have all their ammunition removed it seems. This is frustrating when you are organizing. 2. AI for NPCs could stand to be improved. I was helping a guy one time as he was getting grappled by 12-15 zombies, and I was swinging my machete to try and free him. I inadvertently hit him with a swing in doing so. He immediate broke all the z's grappling him, turned around, and shot me with a shotgun, killing me. Additionally, overhead 'thought bars' for generic conversation amongst other NPCS would probably help the world feel a lot more lived in. 3. I haven't seen all of the map yet, but what I have seen is starting to look very very similar. Lots of gray, lots of the same model houses, and a lot of creative reasons that 2nd story access is blocked off/impossible. Maybe lacks a bit of character at times. 4. Probably the biggest one: Inventory management. It is always going to be a struggle to streamline this in games, but I'd suggest starting with a "sort by" drop-down menu for the backpack. You could sort A-Z, by weight, by value/rarity maybe? by item type? I think there are some simple fixes to this that would help to smooth things out. I am just offering suggestions, but I am not detracting from the game. I think it is good, and that's before I've even played it with anyone. I think when some of my friends get it, it becomes really quite good.

I want to like this game, i really do. There are however a couple of things that keep me from making a positive review for it. Water.... It's a must have, but hard to come by. You can build a rain collector but that however leaves you at the mercy of the RNG weather system. There's also toilet water but the sheer fact that you cannot obtain water from the natural lakes in the game is asinine. The mechanics for purification already exist such as purification tablets or just boiling it. It's frustrating that such a basic need is so exceedingly difficult to come by. The other is the fact that you pretty much have to crawl into a container to get the prompt to interact. It's nitpicky but it's pretty annoying. Honestly though, the camera function is annoying as well. That could be just me though. The graphics are pretty good, as are most of the mechanics of play. There are NPCs to interact wtih, to trade, talk, get quests or fight. A shoot out w/ NPC's is pretty much just strafing back and forth blasting away as there's no real cover system in place For an EA game it's decent. Defintely needs some polish and balance passes though. I'm going to shelve it until it gets some more work done on it. [EDITED] Thank you for the reply. Devs who take the time to respond and do so helpfully are somewhat rare imho.

Pretty fun game and only getting better! There is for sure room for improvement, but the Devs are active not just in continuing to add updates regularly, but they are also very active on Discord and will more often than not respond to any questions or suggestions you may have. Just be careful using their Discord and make sure to not make any mistakes there or you'll catch a "timeout" like you're a child, or even get banned. I caught a 6 day "timeout" for trying to help someone that was having issues with the game crashing, and I guess since it was in "general" chat instead of their help channel they just put me in "timeout", no warning, no heads up. Just straight to a 6 day "timeout".

200 hours in to Humanitz and I just wanted to give a positive review and a big thumbs up to the Dev team! Humanitz is, esentially, an open world survival looter game. You start with nothing, start looting for essentials early on, start crafting, building a base, finding cars and parts to keep them going. Scavenge and hunt for food. Stay healthy and gather med supplies. There's seasons and you need the right gear, especially for the extreme cold events in winter. It's immersive and there's always something to do, even it that's just sitting next to a fire on a cold autumn night, your dog companion laying by your side, guitar in hand, and maybe a beer or two to keep you warm. I think it's a great balance between working on your base, crafting, gathering resources, keeping the zombie hordes at bay, and avoiding or fighting bandits. I play on permadeath, and can live for long periods of time, but always complacency sets in and the inevitable happens. I do like life as a fresh spawn though. Although it's in early access, the game is very playable as-is. The Dev's are very active in the community, have a solid road map, lots of updates and patches. Every update brings fixes to existing bugs, qol improvements, and new content. I can't wait to see how this plays out! Of course there are things I'd like to see changed or added, but since this is early access and the Dev's are so active, anything could change as the game progresses, and I'm just enjoying the ride. I'm a huge Dayz fan, and this scratches an itch when I just want to chill alone in a desolate zombie apocalypse. The game does have online PVP and PVE servers with re-spawning loot, similar to Dayz, but up to this point I've been enjoying exploring and surviving the world solo. If you're on fence about it, jump in to the Steam Discussions or the Discord, and the community will welcome you and listen to your suggestions. If you're not ready to pull the trigger yet, put this one on you're wishlist and check back sometime. This one is a lot of fun if you're in to the open world survival genre!
