Hot Wheels Unleashed is a game I have very mixed feelings about. On the surface I expected the game to be easy to pick up and play, which it is--in a way--as the controls are easy to understand. The problem is with the handling model. The left trigger acts as the brake, and to initiate a drift you need to tap the trigger and start sliding the car, then counter steer a la Burnout or Mario Kart to steer through the corner. Most of the cars I've driven, and I've driven about 2/3 of them at this point, have either way too much understeer or oversteer uncontrollably. Out of the entire list of cars I've driven, I've found 3 that I can tolerate and find "fun" to drive. This is a shame, as the game has had a TON of love put in to the track design, the car design, the graphical quality overall. The game is incredibly well designed from a track standpoint. You could literally take the handling model from Burnout 3, Burnout Revenge, Burnout Paradise, even Need For Speed Hot Pursuit 2010, and plop it in this game and I'd automatically jump the game up a 8/10. As it stands, this is a 6.5/10. And the real reason for this is below. The other big gripe I have with the game is with the difficulty balancing. The AI is difficult to the point of feeling impossible on the hard difficulty. On medium, some races feel like pushovers, and others feel impossible still. On easy, it's a pushover. And I'm writing this with the understanding that I'm using the same 3 cars for all of the levels. If you want to experiment with any cars that are not as good, then you NEED to put the difficulty down to easy as it will literally be impossible to beat some challenges, especially the time trials, as the times to beat are not possible with cars that are objectively not as good. Overall, it's a game I WANT to recommend wholeheartedly. But I simply cannot give it my full endorsement without a big asterisk, which is you need to be a big fan of Hot Wheels and racing games in general to enjoy this game. Otherwise, there are better options out there, such as Milestone's on Gravel, the Dirt Series, the NFS series, Burnout series, or literally most other arcade racers.

The graphics are good, the handling is okay, there's quite some tracks and a ton of cars. If you want to re-live your childhood, this game is spot-on. There is a lot of payable DLC here though, but I guess this is true for most games nowadays, and I miss more gameplay cameras (e.g. front, hood, far behind, maybe even top). Overall, a thumbs up from me.
