I picked up a demo CD for this at CompUSA (R.I.P.) back in they day, played the heck out of it, then got the full game when it was released. Yes the graphics are dated by today's standards but the story is timeless. While the story is great, the best parts are the level designs and the voice acting; both of these really breathe life into the story. There are several levels where you're going in with incomplete intelligence. This leads to fluid mission objectives & strategies which seem more interesting than knowing everything. This doesn't happen every mission but it does happen often enough to keep things interesting. As you progress in the story, the enemies are evolving also. Tom Baker does the narration and he's a perfect fit. Each pilot has their own voice and dialog options. They can compliment or criticize each other, report a kill or enemy sighting, give a status report, complain with your vehicle selection for them ("son... I drive tanks..."), and others. I enjoyed the short video about how Ransom died the first time. I was hoping they would do that for each of the pilots but, sadly, that is not the case. The main negative that stood out for me was the unit pathfinding. Sometimes your helicopter will get stuck on a lightpole and just sit there until you manually intervene. I had a rhino (light tank) on one of the last missions that bumped into a car then got stuck. It's a tank! Anyways, this was a nostalgia buy for me and I still like it. P.S. Yes, the play time is low. It only tracks the launcher, not the game. Actually the game worked much better for me running the hostilewaters.exe file directly without the launcher. With the launcher the text part of the mission debrief was horrendously slow.

Here we have a unique mix of RTS and vehicle combat games. There's a story that makes the game feel more foreboding and dare I say, epic. You have these consciousness chips you slot into the war machines you can build, letting them to follow your commands or act on their own. But to build them you need to gather metal from broken buildings and vehicles. The game feels rewarding because you can greatly influence how well you manage if you can pilot well. Then you're able to take out as much as possible of the enemy infrastructure before going down. Then go clean up with another chopper that has the AI partners as wingmen. The game is not a pure RTS, because you have a pause menu where you can give commands, so in that sense it's more relaxed. On top of everything, the explosions look amazing and there's a great atmosphere. Makes me wish there'd be more similar games, like said this is in a league of its own.

I sadly cannot launch this game anymore, but I used to play this all the time when I was younger. I inherited a few items from my uncle and this game was something that was with it. Why do I recommend it, my own emotional attachments aside? It is a gem of its time, and ahead of its time as well. The setting is one where world peace was achieved, a utopia exists, but the old powers want to retake it. You are a resurrected soldier, with a roster of others through a sophisticated program to fight this cabal under guidance of two veterans hoping to protect the world many have died for. You will fight the weapons of old war, you will face the odds stacked against you, but there is another threat....not all weapons are mechanical. Something else will stand in your way in the story, something out of the Cabal's control. You will see horrors, you will feel the pressure at times, and you will learn quickly that you are in hostile waters. The gameplay is you controlling a carrier that uses nanites to build weapons of war, chips added to them to work under your command or direct control. Helicopters, tanks, salvage units, and more. It is a mixture of third person shooter and real time strategy. The voice acting is also amazing, they even have the legendary Tom Baker. Your soldiers all have unique personalities and will even compliment each other (or bicker) and communicate their situations. If you are looking to gift a game to your kid and question, yes there is foul language but I wanted to say in this review because of all things I found this to be unique for a game of its time - there is a profanity filter. Other than that, there are moments of gore and violence, unsure if that is toggled in any way, I have not been able to play this game in ten years. For gamers looking for a fun old style game, I cannot recommend this enough. Will probably rewrite this when sober.
