April 2025
RATING: 7/10 I like this game, and would recommend it for a light and charming puzzle game. The gameplay loop is based on altering tiles to build habitats for animals based on their certain terrain/object needs, and it's very rewarding to get into the minutiae of tailoring every tile to fit as many animals as possible in one area. More animals = more income to buy more objects and expand your land. However, the game is massively unpolished and lacking quality of life. Enter with some expectations. - The interface and habitat-building is cumbersome. Unless you "Master" an animal, the game will display its needs as empty/partially-filled/half-filled/full circles. This is EXTREMELY hard to comprehend. (A fennec fox, for instance, is an almost-full circle Desert, almost half-full sand, and a smidge water...) This left me rebuilding tiles over and over to try to satiate the requirements, not knowing what number of each tile to use. This is especially annoying since terrain takes time to build, and changing a tile can instantly break the synergy of the surrounding habitats and lead to a domino-effect of unhappy animals in the radius. The wiki has precise numbers for each tile needed, but at this point, the DLC animals have not been uploaded. The habitat-building tool is also cumbersome to use, and it's difficult to precisely relocate a habitat to a new tile. - It takes a VERY long time to get started, since you have to wait for animals to move in. That means the first few days or weeks have long periods of just waiting for your income to accrue. This is especially true in the DLC, when the upkeep of your heaters and staff eat at whatever profits you garner. There is NO fast-forward button during the day. I've played similar civilization/habitat building games that require patience, but at least there are more time-control mechanics in those games, and more gameplay mechanics to keep you engaged as you wait. - The Quests are boring. They are full of long-winded cutscenes and text, but you have to read them anyway or risk missing a step. Sandbox Questless Mode is, unfortunately, unplayable since the quests gave you crucial terrain for starter animals, such as water. The result? Paying for the shop to refresh every day, and PRAYING the tile shows up. (Again, no fast-forward button during the day.) I'm up to day 15, refreshing the shop everyday, and still no water tile. It's strange to release an entire mode without also filling in the gaps that the quests should have provided. -Corruption/Animal Illness is unrewarding and a waste of time. Dispelling corrupted creatures is *not* difficult at all, but the gameplay loop of banishing them in the base-game is tedious/unengaging, and every invasion feels more annoying than anything. Your animals will get sporadically sick, and their hearts will deplete. Sometimes this will happen in the middle of you building habitats, the animals will lose hearts, and move out, thus decreasing your income. As a result, you have to spontaneously hop all over the map (press spacebar to automatically teleport to a sick animal) and heal them all. This was annoying in the base game, but at least your gnomes will eventually help with defense and first aid. In the DLC, though, your gnomes *will not* swim across rivers. That means that they can't reach aquatic creatures that are surrounded by tiles of water, and you have to heal these yourself. (The mussels only have ONE HEART, so I keep losing these to illness.) There is a certain invader in the DLC that also seems to automatically evacuate your animals, which is very annoying since income is already staggered by heater costs. (Luckily I got rid of him fast.) - The DLC's mechanics are awful. Heater costs overwhelmingly unbalanced compared to income and animal intake rates. Unfair invader. The upgrades being randomly attained, so you can't choose extremely useful upgrades like "More Love (more income)" from the get-go. Feels like artificial bottlenecks to make the game last longer. That being said, I've spent almost 50 hours in this game so far. As unbalanced as it is, I still enjoyed the experience. I hope the devs put time into figuring out gameplay balance issues and quality-of-life. As it is, they seemed to not have learned their lesson with the new expansion -- they simply added new unbalanced mechanics, instead of refining the problems that already exist. I'm hoping they make better expansions in the future, and I'll stay tuned-in for mods since the community is adding more terrain and species.

Do you desperately want to play more Viva Piñata? Get this game, it is the closest thing you will ever get to Viva Piñata that's not just replaying Viva Piñata. Plant a garden, attract creatures to the habitats you create, unlock upgrades for your tools, decorate, smack off the forces of evil (with magic, not a shovel this time) or whittle away time in sandbox mode. It's comprehensive and will last you for ages.

Not gonna lie Steam readers, this has been a pretty low and sad month for me personally. This game is like a warm ray of sunshine for me and it brings a subtle little joy fussing over how to grow and advance. This is something like a garden game mixed with an clicker game with plenty to do while actively playing. Don't be fooled there's a lot of management too but it expects you to slowly learn each creature's do's and don'ts over time. Failure is very soft as long as you're not totally AFK. Terrible title, very solid game.

Listen, I hate the term 'cozy game' - I feel as a genre marker it tells me nothing, and most things that people refer to that way just fall flat for me. Horticular is the Finally, Some Good F*cking Food moment of cozy games. There's polish and love in every corner of this game. The different characters and their dialogue is a treat, the tutorials are short and clear and to the point, the sprite work is bright and fun and readable. I can't believe it's taken until Horticular to get another game about making a habitat for animals that doesn't feel like it's constantly pressuring you - there are things to balance and dangers that occur in the game, but I haven't felt like I have to rush and I don't feel like anything will be a fatal mistake if I decide to experiment. It's just such a sweet experience. I'm excited to sink countless hours into this thing!!

After years of blood-pressure stabilising, cute-frog exclaiming, Spade and plant upgrading - it's here. I didn't even look at the price for more than 2 seconds, as no matter what amount it was, it was very much a "TAKE MY MONEY!" situation. I played the demo for over 600 hours all up and i knew i was getting something unique and brilliant with the full release. I wasn't wrong! I know this review isn't the most succinct or informative i've ever delivered, honestly Horticular is SUCH a simple game on the outset, yet the way everything is balanced really gives you a run for your money, especially if you ramp up the difficulty level! It's a gardening simulator, but so so so much more than that. It's a biome simulator, but so so so much more than that! All I can say, is GET THE DEMO! You won't regret it :) Thank you, Developer! I have watched your wonderful little project grow into this brilliant, fresh game and thank goodness it did, as it's my 'feel good' game when life is throwing chairs at me. Hal. PS. The frogs' eyes. I'm dying. It's so cute, even after this long.
