the game can be a bit tough early on but then one must remember I am nearly 83 years old but you younger ones should have no difficulty with your sharper reflexes

The game world is absolutely enormous with some of the most beautiful scenery ever created in a AAA game. The main story is epic in scope, and there is so much side content you almost despair of getting it done. It's also mostly quality stuff, with very little fetchit and pizza delivery. The cut scenes are wonderfully produced, with some of the best mocap I've ever seen, and the music is uniformly great. The gameplay is rather different from that of Zero Dawn. The developers seem to want to ensure that Aloy doesn't get overpowered, so she rarely one-shots anything. Instead, the player needs to chip away at a machine's health by hitting weak spots and removing components. Some content creators have made freakish builds that do tremendous damage, but such builds aren't very practical and, in my opinion, go against the spirit of the developers' design ideas. There is a new emphasis on melee fighting which has caused some controversy. I don't care much for it, but I acknowledge that it's one of those things you'll probably enjoy if you get good at it. Upgrading weapons and outfits requires a much bigger commitment than in Zero Dawn. Prepare to spend a long time fighting a lot of big machines to max out a legendary item. On my system (i7 13700k, rtx 4070ti, 32gb ram, 2tb m.2 nvme drive), the game's performance has been excellent. The port to pc has, in my experience, been trouble free with very rare exceptions involving shader compilations. Just be aware that this is a huge game with stellar production values, and this demands relatively serious hardware. Aloy does not look exactly the same way she did in Zero Dawn, but this is because her face is more detailed. No one is conspiring to make her any less pretty than she was. In my opinion, she is still a very attractive video game character. She remains extremely athletic and does not have an excess ounce of fat anywhere on her person, in spite of what people think they're seeing. The game is not perfect, but I have enjoyed it quite a lot.

Pros + Huge improvement in combat from HZD (many more weapons and skills) + Great story + Well written and likeable characters + Exceptional motion capture and voice acting + Lots of fun side content + Satisfying traversal and exploration (flight!) + Absolutely beautiful environment + Highly customisable photo mode + Great soundtrack + Great optimisation Cons - A little too much ragdolling when swarmed and attacked by enemies - Parkour/climbing is kinda stiff - Burning Shores DLC is not as optimised as main game Neutral +/- Melee combat is greatly improved from HZD, but enemy AI is overtuned and their attacks feel very cheap Conclusion I generally have no interest in the repetition of New Game+, but the Horizon games are the only games where I just don't get tired of the gameplay loop. Getting tired of the main story? Go do side quests. Don't want to do side quests? Go to the hunting grounds, melee fighting pits, or take out rebel camps. Don't want to kill anything? Go racing or play board games! Or if you just wanna chill, go explore, enjoy the scenery, and get that perfect shot. IMO, HFW more than deserves to stand amongst the other Open World greats like RDR2 and TW3. I could go on all day about just how many things this game gets right, so I'll just say this: Welcome to gaming perfection.

It has some quality of life improvements compared to Zero Dawn, and the game is really beautiful! But the story is a little weak in my opinion. Learning about the past and what happened to the world in the first game was incredibly fascinating. But Forbidden West just doesn't have that feeling anymore. That being said, if you enjoyed the first game, there's still plenty to love in Forbidden West. And the core gameplay remains the same, they haven’t really changed the formula, they’ve just made it bigger and better. While the story may not reach the same heights as ZD, the sheer scale and beauty of FW make it a worthy sequel!

Beautiful game Runs at around 30fps on steam deck and with FSR enabled it makes the LOD views much better than running at low or off. Dips at times to below 30fps just like zero dawn but still playable and enjoyable.
