Immediately loved this game for its sense of style and voice. Immediately became ill in the first fight sequence due to the flashing lights without any clear posted warning that I could find. The sound effects during the battles are also unbearably loud compared to the rest of the game. Not sure if there is something wrong with my install or what, but I am very disappointed I will not be able to continue it because I have no way to solve these issues without muting my game and not looking at it.

Feels like this was the original intended format for Homestuck. I think this is a well made, solid game. Some people argue that it's too short but this is only the first act in a series and if you take the time to explore all of the dialogue options you can get a good 15+ hrs of game play out of this. The music is fantastic, the art is very solid with highly detailed, beautiful painted environments. It is very much a point and click adventure so if that is not your thing you will not enjoy this game regardless of how good it is - lots of reading and puzzle solving. You can see that a lot of love was put into this project and these characters and I respect that. If the genre is your type of thing I'd highly recommend

Hiveswap: Act 1 is a delight! The vast majority of the Steam reviews appear to be from fans of the related webcomic - and I'm glad they're having fun with this - but actually this is a wonderful adventure game even for people like me who had never even heard of the source material. Its target audience appears to be people who were kids in the 90s, and this short episode is filled with nods to pop culture of the era. Somehow, though, it avoids coming across as pandering or gimmicky. The trick is that the characters have authentic voices for the tweens (?) they are supposed to be - just bold and precocious enough to get themselves into silly situations, but with all the awkward cringe of being a kid still figuring it all out. They're not super hip or cool, they're just regular kids, and that's refreshing. The artwork is great, but what really makes this adventure work is the music and the comic timing. At certain points when you solve a puzzle, it moves through a short cutscene to make sure the (sometimes laugh-out-loud funny) outcome hits at exactly the right moment. I wish more adventure games would pay attention to this sort of stuff, because it makes a big difference to how the script comes across. Impeccable direction. So, it's funny. It looks good. It sounds good. It features charming characters. The puzzles are simple, but you can combine most everything with everything else to get a unique quip, which always makes adventure games more fun. There's monsters! And aliens! This might be one of my favorite adventures since the Space Pilgrim series. I will definitely be picking up the second episode and then waiting however many years it takes for the third one to drop. If you're looking for a light, cheerful adventure and you remember Clarissa Explains It All, you will likely enjoy this game as much as I did.

Normally it's *not* a good thing when an IP is distanced from its original author, but in this case the author is Andrew Hussie, and this game benefits a lot from his absence. Excellent art, perfectly coherent writing (a first for the HS brand), and a bunch of nostalgia bait. Perfect for people who like Homestuck's world but hate its author.

The Hiveswap storyline and concept had been through alot of changes with everything (3D models going to a 2D art format, very nice. And original dialog trees between Joey and Jude.) But I love how the end product turned out, even if Hiveswap as a franchise is kind of a developmental mess due to it's past and whatnot. The game itself is stunning, I really love art and how it tries to stay consistent with the original Homestuck Webcomic. The characters and their own unique dialog really helps tie in the game to make it more charming. Especially with Xefros and the concept of Alternia. I absolutely love Joey as a character, I love how she's written and her character design is absolutely adorable (including Jude aswell... keeping the Harley genes strong.) Although, the one small issue regarding the achievements. I couldn't get the last one I needed to 100 percent the game, and I heard it's unattainable due to certain things. Overall the game is really fun and nostalgic with the point and click adventure style kind of game like Sam & Max hit the road, etc.
