one of the most horrifying depictions of child abuse I have ever read. the way my fucking stomach dropped during that tips screen showing domestic/family abuse statistics with satoko in the background, the music sting when it showed THAT particular statistic next to satoko's defeated and broken sprite. the ENTIRE scene where satoko breaks down sobbing and vomiting at lunch just from keiichi touching her head, and the way rena holds her and sobs apologetically for not being able to help her. fucking christ. I believe ryukishi07 or someone close to him has said that he used to do social work before he got into writing or publishing higurashi, and I 100% believe it. this was written by a man who has seen the depths of depravity, the worst of humanity and saw firsthand what it can do to a child forced to endure it. the scene of mion, rena, and keiichi arguing and discussing what could be done to help satoko out of her situation is one of the most impressively voice acted scenes in higurashi as a whole, ESPECIALLY rena. hearing her tear into keiichi for his well-intentioned but horribly insensitive comments towards mion and her assumed ability to "save" satoko was both incredibly gratifying and mildly terrifying. it's clear how much this little group of friends care about each other, but at the same time they only have so much they can really do with the tools at their disposal. it's a sad, real commentary on the difficulties of getting people to actually listen and help and the state of child welfare at the time in japan (though sadly it still remains pretty relevant today). So yknow I'd love to be able to give this chapter a perfect score but unfortunately we were introduced to a new character by the name of dr irie in tatarigoroshi. and in the chapter that otherwise teaches the subject of child abuse with the respect and gravitas it deserves, we have to listen to irie making weird-ass comments about wanting to marry satoko and have her as his maid. i get it, it was the early 2000's, it's meant to be comedic and we're supposed to sympathize with irie in the end because he too also wants to help save satoko from her abusive home life but it's kinda hard to do that when he spends the first third of his screentime being a total fucking creep. if it weren't for the fact that he has a pretty important role in the story going forward, I'd be happy to completely excise him from the whole thing and call it a day it really does suck because the rest of this chapter is just so good. I was right there alongside keiichi seeing red when it was revealed that satoko's situation was not improving and nothing at all had been done to help her despite their efforts. and in spite of the circumstances, I was kind of rooting for him when he began to crack and decided to take matters into his own hands. I just wish that irie and his prior comments didn't exist and didn't risk undermining what is otherwise such a real and respectful depiction of abuse with satoko's story 9/10, best chapter of the question arcs by far! just make sure to ignore higurashi gou/sotsu to not retroactively ruin this chapter in particular

This is definitely one of my favorite chapters throughout the whole series. Without spoiling, it depicts something that is very real and visceral and grounded compared to the more super natural and "out there" elements of the first couple chapters. Don't worry though, because it still has moments that make you go WTF. I thoroughly enjoyed a lot of the characters in this chapter and think this is where the writing really carries imo. I cannot recommend this chapter enough and I give you my word that if you played the previous two, this will probably be your favorite by the time the credits roll.

This chapter is a little bit different from the previous two because here along the way we keep focus on one character (Satoko), and don't experience so many gruesome murders like in the previous chapters. Also, we get two new characters with their avatars. They are not very interesting, but I think that we will find out more about their personalities in the next chapters. Additionally, as in the previous chapter (Watanagashi), we get a couple of new soundtracks here. Unfortunately, they are rather plain. Don't get me wrong, but I think that this game deserves better music. Good news: Missed insane Rena in the previous chapter? Satoko's chapter has a surprise for you. (Don't expect a blast—you will stumble upon maniacal Rena 2-3 times in this chapter). To be honest, this chapter was a little bit worse compared to the previous two. Maybe it's because of the ending, or maybe the amount of murder scenes didn't satisfy me. (I PAID FOR BLOOD!!!) But despite all of that, I still enjoyed it. Satoko's story and character development are really dramatic. I think that this chapter just is not my type, but I still have the motivation to read the next chapter and encourage you to do the same. Save Satoko and uncover the truth. 8/10

Tatarigoroshi-hen is a not so pleasant change of pace in Higurashi's horror aspects. Not to say this chapter is bad but its unpleasant in that the horror is more relatable to a much wider audience than the suspicion and paranoia we see in Onikakushi and Watanagashi

I admit that at first I wasn't sure what to expect because I've seen several negative opinions on this chapter (such as it being "weak", etc) but I ended up getting so invested! The first half was a bit meh to me, mostly because Keiichi's behaviour annoyed me but once a certain, intense scene came up where he had like a complete mind-switch, I got so addicted to the story. All events got VERY suspenseful, there were moments where my heart kept racing and I was actually anxious to continue the text. After that the story just kept getting more twisted and weird until the ending (which I loved too). The beginning of the story may have the familiar "structure" and atmosphere but the rest of the chapter felt very different from the previous ones, which I found to be refreshing. I really don't want to spoil but once the festival comes near the story will start progressing in a new way which I enjoyed A LOT. I don't even want to compare the chapters because (for example in comparison to the 2nd chapter) the type of horror is quite different, if it makes sense. So far all chapters have had me captivated and feeling tensed up at some points but the novels managed to do so in different ways each time. There are a bunch of things I could mention that I loved about this chapter but it's nearly impossible to do without spoilers, so I guess that's all. Can't wait to finally have time for the next chapter!
